Subject: David Shea plays UK date (fwd)
Date: 01 Feb 1996 20:53:53 -0800 (PST)
I think simon meant this to go to the list although he sent it just to
me. Wish I could be there, but maybe the man will make it to San Fran
one of these days.
Saw zoviet france years ago. Three guys improvised an hour long set with
a 4 track k7 deck a piece, several hundred toys and about a million delay
units. Great a moments, bland at others, but in one aspect they were
consistent. Absolutely no connection with their audience.
I'm still working on the new Shea disc (75 minutes) giving it the head
phone treatment which it lends itself to very well. More ambient/mellow
than Hsi-Yu Chi, but it seems to be up to snuff.
Alexander
---------- Forwarded message ----------
David Shea is playing as part of the New Auras 3 dates at the Royal Festival
Hall in London on Feb 23rd (along with zoviet*france). Also featuring are the
Hong Kong turntable artist Xper. Xr. (1 March) and Crossley Bendix of
Negativland (8 March.
(Are there any other UK based people in this mailing list?)

I wanted to see if anyone could possibly yield any information on this
album. It's by a fellow named Steve Beresford, I believe. He plays
piano and sings. The reason I'm curious about the album is that his
backing musicians are John Zorn, Dave Douglas, Greg Cohen, and Kenny
Wollessen, each credited with their own instrument and backing vocals.
It was on a Japanese label, I think the same one that's put out some Zorn
stuff in the past, and I was curious if anyone had any knowledge of this
album. Thanks.

I was just listening it at some friends place yesteday. It is an enjoyable
record that you should take with a grain of salt. It is 99% melodic and
of a "loungy" style. The lyrics are very dry English humour and (for the
little I can understand) are quite entertaining. The music is very straight
but occasionally you can expect a fairly powerfull solo by Zorn. A fun
disc, not demanding at all. But if you are on the experimental side, you
should better skip it.

Hey Zorn groupies...
I just picked up Rubaiyat (Elektra's 40th Anniversary 2 CD set) It's a
compilation of various artists doing covers. And Lo & behold John Zorn does
"TV Eye" a Stooges song from 1970. All Naked City fans should pick it up.
Zorn: alto sax
Yamatsuka Eye: Vocals
Robert Quine: guitar
Bill Laswell: Bass
Ted Epstien: Drums
I'm sure Patrice will give you all the exact details. The release was
from 1990.

Subject: Buckethead CD
Date: 05 Feb 1996 15:55:00 PST
If this is the second time this message has gone out, I apologize, as until
today, I haven't gotten a Zorn digest in weeks, and my message has never
come up.
There has been a lot of talk on this list about Buckethead, so I thought I'd
give out this information. For those of you who didn't know, the music for
the movie "Last Action Hero" was done by Buckethead. The soundtrack
unfortunately only had one song of Buckethead's, to make room for all the
popular alterna-metal bands that they put in the movie to make some bucks.
Well, I happen to have stumbled upon 2 copies of a 2nd Last Action Hero
Soundtrack featuring all songs by Buckethead at a nearby used CD store. I've
never seen this CD anywhere else before, so I'm not sure how common/rare it
is. So, I figured I'd offer it to anyone here who wants a copy. The price
was $7.99, so it would cost you $10 if you want me to buy it for you ($2
postage). Please e-mail me if you're interested in purchasing this disc, and
if there is a lot of interest in it, maybe I'll aution it off (to be fair to
the digest subscribers). Please let me know if anyone's interested.

in the article, Mick Harris mentions that Zorn now lives in China for
6 months out of the year
well...I know Zorn used to spend a lot of time in Japan and although I
don't track Zorn's geographical location as closely as his music, I'd
still like to know what the story behind this is

I'm responding to my own post I sent earlier today to apologize on a
"slight" mistake I made. I just went to the CD store that had the copy of
the "Last Action Hero" soundtrack to make sure I was correct about
everything, and I wasn't entirely correct. The soundtrack was composed by
Michael Kamen. The band that Kamen put together includes Buckethead on
guitar. I don't know exactly how many songs Buckethead performs on, but I'm
assuming most of them because not only is he listed second on the list of
musicians only under Kamen, but the sticker on the disc says "Featured
Performances By BUCKETHEAD". So, I'm sorry if I led anyone the wrong way, if
anyone is still interested in purchasing the disc. I will either get it for
you for $10 ($7.99 + $2 shipping), or to be fair to digest subscribers like
me who sometimes get these posts a week or so after they were originally
posted, if there is numerous interest in the disc, I will auction it off to
the 2 highest bidders.

My understanding, and I believe I got this informaion from one of the
many buckethead web sites on the net, is that Buckethead is on two
tracks. I woudlnt be suprised if one of the tracks was the same as on the
other soundtrack? By the way, does anyone know of any buckethead sites
that featur either articles on music written by Buckethead, or
tab/transcriptions of his songs? I am in a band, and one of the songs we
do is "Child King". If anyone is interested in the main riff, I could
probably put up the tab for it.

As I mentioned a week ago, our hosts have changed
the mail-list software that operates the zorn-list.
Currently, it is not working all that well. From
what I can tell, the regular daily list is sending
out messages to everyone in a reasonable manner.
The digest form of the list is still a bit funky
(feel free to email me privately with any helpful

The WORST thing is that *NO ONE* can subscribe

Please be patient as I am going away for a 5 day

Yes, my girlfriend got it for me for Christmas. And it is Burroughs
reading, not somebody else. On Warner Audio Books label.
The music, I think is cool - spooky, ambient type stuff - VERY much more in
the style of Bill Frisell, both his playing and composition, than Horvitz.
The music only serves interludally (don't know if that's a word or not). A
good portion of it is just Burroughs speaking...which in itself gets
downright spooky a lot - one could easilly freak oneself out listening to
this alone at 3 am. It helps if you've read the book too so that you can
recognize the 'events' - it's not really in the form of Seven Souls or
Spare Ass Annie. The music kind of serves as a reverse-narration in that it
comes inbetween episodes and does some commentary. The entire collection
(not the entire book) is 3 CDs.
The music is good for the medium, but don't get it thinking you're buying a
music CD. Nothing they play is incredibly long or drawn out - and they
aren't even mentioned on the CD cover - only inside in the credits. So it's
like, WSB reads Naked Lunch with incidental music by Bill Frisell and Wayne
Horvitz. I could see Warner Audio Books not wanting to market it like that
so people would get it for Burroughs words and not Frisell and Horvitz's
music. Or who knows, maybe Burroughs didn't want it marketed like that. Or
Bill and Wayne didn't.

Howdy,
For those of you interested in Jongleur discussion your can reach their
list at Jongleurs@aol.com
They just finished a tour of the southeast and recorded an album in
Atlanta that's scheduled to be available in the spring for a
Northeastern tour.
Also, I know I'm a bit behind the times with that whole Cage/silence
discussion but, Peter Chen and others might be interested in a quote I
heard on the John Cage/Roland Kirk Video. Many of you may have heard it
but I didn't see it on the list during the discussion on Cage's interest
in silence and its impossibility. He said (I hope it's exact):

I've got to be the world's greatest Sub Rosa fan. That aside, I'll admit
that only a few items in their catalogue are relevant to this list (i.e.
Marc Ribot, David Shea, etc). Joey Baron by all means.
This is all I know. I just looked up the label at cdconnection.com, and
found this entry:
FOLDS & RHIZOMES (FOR GI FOLDS & RHIZOMES (FOR GILLES D

Doesn't tell you a lot, but the fact that it's already in

Folds and Rhizomes isn't really relevant to this list but has been out for a
few weeks and is one of my favorite records in a while. It features new ten
minute tracks by Mouse On Mars, Oval, Main, and Scanner, all of which stand
with their best work, and a shorter piece by David Shea (along with someone
else, my copy's lent out right now). Highly recommended for anyone who's
considering dabbling in modern electronica for the first time.
Zorn content: I didn't pick up the Japanese Cobra record initially because
I'm not a big fan of the Hat Art Cobra. However, after reading David Toop's
recent rave in The Wire, I bought it and think it's pretty great. Zorn's
really outdone himself with this most recent set of four superb releases
(Cobra, Harras, and the two most recent Masada discs). Anyone know when we're
supposed to see that Parachute box released on Tzadik? I can't wait for that.

Not immediately. The next delivery of Tzadik releases is planned on April
and it will contain only two reissues: CLASSIC GUIDE OF STRATEGY and FILMWORKS
VOL. 2.
Besides these reissues, there will be one Elliott Sharp (XENO-CODEX, initially
planned on Avant), one Leo Smith and a vocal trio formed of Yoshida Tatsuya,
Eyvind Kang and Li Chin Sung.

I had heard something about Tatsuya Yoshida recording in the context of a
vocal trio, but was under the impression that this was not to be released for
quite some time, and even then on God Mountain as opposed to Tzadik.
Recently I picked up a copy of an untitled limited edition (with hand made
cover artwork) compact disc by Jason Willet and Ruins (released through
Megaphone Records Limited series), and it is seriously demented and
beautiful. I have been looking for others who are as fantical about
Yoshida's work as I am for quite some time, but have yet to hook up with
anyone. Any clues on where to look for these like minded listeners, or maybe
clues on where to look for a discography? I have a substantial number of
Yoshida's CD's, but I am pretty sure that I am missing some, and would like
to know what exactly they are. "Infect" has been eluding me for two years
now, as SSE CD's have no outlet here in Chicago... any mail order services
that anyone here knows of that carry this? I realize that I haven't even
mentioned the musician who's has been appropriated and used as the title of
this mailing list, but the jump from Zorn to Yoshida is not such a large and
treacherous one, and this would be as likely a place as any to seek out some
information regarding one of the world's most insanely wonderful composers...

a release on compact disc... the line up is Centazzo on percussion, John Zorn
on reeds, Polly Bradfield on violin, Eugene Chadbourne on guitar, Tom Cora on
cello, and Toshinori Kondo on trumpet. The CD presents about 45 minutes of
structured improvisation performed by the sextet, as well as a five minute
duo between Centazzo and Zorn... all in all an excellent recording both in
terms of sound and artistry. This CD was apparently originally issued by

Their last records are more ambient as their first records maybe more

Well, there are way too many people interested in getting copies of the live
Naked City videos... just making enough copies for eveyone would take an
amount of time which I do not have to spare. I could very easily make one or
two sets (the five hours is stretched over two cassettes), and then the rest
of you could begin copying them and trading them amongst each other... this
obviously takes more time in the long run, but it saves everyone a lot of
time by breaking up the task of copying the tapes among all of the interested
people. Set up a ladder of traders, and I'll gladly make copies for the
people on the first two steps...
As for the NRG Ensemble... they are, quite simply, the loudest, heaviest,
most insane avant garde jazz engine currently in existence. The line up on
their just released eighth album, "This Is My House," is the same as was
featured on their seventh, "Calling All Mothers..." Mars Williams and Ken
Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler and Brian Sandstrom on bass (as well as
some trumpet and guitar for Sandstrom), and Steve Hunt on drums, vibes, and
percussion. Dan Scanlan (Broken Wire) makes an appearance on one track
playing violin, and Don Meckley (Liof Munimula) makes an appearance on one
track playing a short wave radio. "This Is My House" easily stands up with
the always incredible previous NRG offerings, and offers a beautiful glimpse
into an invigorating stage of their ever changing sound. Check it out, and
keep an eye open in May for a disc by Cinghiale, a duo project featuring NRG
screamers Williams and Vandermark.

What exactly is the difference between making a copy of the video tape for
one person and making a copy of the video tape for one person with the
understanding that the person will copy it for someone else (and so on)? I
guess that you could call it bootlegging, but I can see how more than a few
people would take some sort of offense at that notion, seeing as how the end
result in what is happening here (fans of the music have another document,
albeit unauthorized, of the performance unit in question) is so different
from the end result in more traditional forms of bootlegging (someone makes
profit through the sales of an unauthorized recording). If people are
opposed to the trade that I mentioned, I am quite sorry for the offense.
Whatever...

I think the point to be addressed here is not if people are offended by tape
trading, or commercial bootlegging, but rather hw the artist feels about the
material being passed around. Does Zorn (or the rest of the band) want this
item in circulation? If no, why not, and if so why hasn't he released it
through one of his companies? Considering the fact (or rumour, whatever)
that JZ was somehow responsible for for having Cadence stop selling the live
Masada disc, and the fact that he does have complete control over so much of
his catalogue via Avant and Tzadik, I really doubt he approves of any
unauthorized material being circulated.
Just my opinion

Someone mentioned the Graham Connah Group as a great oppurtonity to hear
Trevor Dunn get down. Does anybody know any more about him/them? I know
that they're listed in the 'Bay Area Mob Job' on TJ Kirk's album (as
Graham Connah's Languish and Fester) so I will assume a locale, but
that's all I know. Could anybosdy out there yield any more information
possibly?
Also, I was just checking out the KF homepage. Is it just me, or is
Masada playing NINE nights in a row in April? looks like it to me. Now
if I can only get UT to reschedule spring break a month....
--Tom--
by the way, (I swear, this should be my sig file by now) if anybody out
there is into to tape trading and has downtown/KF and/or Bay Area stuff,
drop me a line. I've more of the same (Charlie Hunter, Masada, others...)
and a few other random things (Primus, Mr Bungle...)

I actually fail to see this point. As far as I know, there are no Naked
City videos available. Not only that, there is no profit involved
anywhere in this, only a exchange of tapes at cost. The Masada live disc
on JazzDoor is perhaps "a bit on the sleazy side" (although I still
bought it). This is just a wonderful idea to share something unique with
the many people who never saw Naked City live. And I can't imagine Mr.
Zorn protesting this at all.

I do see your point, but I think that you are forgetting something. Of
course there is a possibility that Zorn is against all unauthorized
releases of his material. But as long as no one is making money off of
his work w/ out sharing it with him, why should he care? Obviously the
performance was videotaped so Zorn approved that. As for why it was
never released, unless it was because Zorn thought the performances wer
horrible, I would say it's because there just isn't a large enough market
for it. I mean think about it, a Naked City live video wouldn't exactley
have people lining up outside their nearest Tower Records to get it. Now
that's too bad, but it's the way things are in the music industry.

See, there's a difference. JazzDoor put out the Masada live disc without
Zorn giving them permission, but not only that, not a single cent in
profit from the sales of that recording went to the band. But how much
will Zorn lose from out tape tree? Nothing, because items are being
exchanged at cost. A copy of the Naked City video will cost you the
price of two blank tapes and postage. Not $15.99 like the Masada live disc.

Hi,
Can someone tell me more on this Naked City video that everyone's been
arguing about?
How can I get hold of a copy?
I think it's ok for people to exchange live shows etc with no intension of
profitting from it, this is the whole idea of bootlegging, isn't it. Unless
the artist themselves oppose to this idea. I have not seen Zorn live but am
aware that bootlegging Zorn'ss shows are quite a common practice, kinda like
a "if we don't know, it doesn't matter" attitude.
Anyways, the main thing is to enjoy the music, and share them with everyone!!
Take care and God Bless!

oh, i have a feeling he'd protest plenty, but who knows. why don't you ask
him. a similar issue came up recently on the sun ra mailing list, and it was
decided that this was the best solution. the early sun ra albums are harder
to get than the early zorn stuff, and pretty much the only way any of us will
ever hear some of that stuff is by taping, but the surviving members of his
group still come out against tape trading. of course these guys have been
shafted much more and are much poorer than zorn, so that's bound to
influence their attitude. if you write to the tzadik address and ask him, you
could prove me wrong, and then i'd say sign me up!

Does anyone on this list KNOW what Zorn's feeling about this practice is?
Patrice? If not, I'll be happy to write to him and ask. An old friend of
mine has worked with Zorn, so could possibly give me a sense of his
response. I think this issue is an important one. It's cropping up more
and more in the visual arts as images are electronically appropriated.
I also have never seen Zorn live so would love to have copies of these
tapes. If it comes to pass, can I be an honorary Bay Area resident and get
on that tree? I have a friend in Oakland who could be my liaison--he'd
probably like a tape too. (Actually he plays with Graham Connah sometimes,
so could probably provide some info for the person asking about him and
Trevor Dunn.)

Forget it. Serously. I have absolutely no desire to copy the Naked City tapes
even once. The letters posted to this bulletin board/mailing list do not
offer even a clue as to how many uniquely threatening personal responses my
initial inquiry has brought from members of this bulletin board/mailing list,
which has made me question the sanity of many of the people who post
information through this service. If I said that I received twenty personal e
mail letters filled with threats ("I'll wipe all bootleggers off of the
internet" or something to that effect), severely harsh and uncalled for
language (which I will obviously not repeat here), and various other letters
of a basically evil nature, would you be surprised? I certainly was. I
question the significance of a bulletin board/mailing list such as this when
it seems as if the majority of the subscribers are quite juvenile in terms of
thought processes and communication techniques. Forget that I even have the
video tapes, or that I ever made mention of them.
I've been waiting for some feedback from others who have picked up the
recently reissued "Environment for Sextet" recording featuring Zorn, Cora,
Centazzo, Chabourne, Kondo, and Brafield... hasn't anyone else checked this
one out yet?
As for Connah, he is an incredible piano player with too many projects to
make mention of, and too few available recordings to properly spread the word
about his style. The Graham Connah Group recording that I previously
mentioned, "Snaps Erupt At Pure Spans," is as far as I know the only full
length CD release of his work. Aside from that, the GCG contributed a track
to the "Wavelength Infinity" Sun Ra tribute CD, and Connah added some piano
sounds to the recent Mr. Bungle "Disco Volante" CD. The GCG CD was released
by a label called Sour Note (about which I know nothing, as the CD did not
provide a contact address for a catalogue of other releases or what not), and
can be picked up through Cadence. I know that the GCG has recorded (or is
about to record) another full length effort, but as for when it will appear I
have no clue...

no offense to any individual but who really cares what zorn thinks about
trading live recordings of his shows? it wouldn't matter to me whether he
despised the practice, as a fan, if i find live recordings i can trade for,
i don't think twice about the artist's view. i'm not stealing anything from
him (if he were to put out his own live album/video i'd certainly still buy
it). if the performance is bad, so what? i don't think anyone performs at
the top of their game every night and it's my problem if a get a tape of a
bad show. live tapes are a sort of historical archives of the history of
rock and especially jazz, if it weren't for tapers, some of the greatest
performances of all times would have been lost forever.

i didn't really want to join in this fray, but here goes:
i am extremely perplexed to read that the person who proposed
copying the tapes for others has been receiving threatening and
offensive mail. i can't possibly imagine that someone smart
enough to appreciate zorn and his music would be so juvenile
and close-minded. after all, i don't think we, as a list, take
it as a PHILOSOPHICAL GIVEN that bootlegging is immoral or bad.
the point is: some relatively fruitful discussion of the topic
was transpiring on the list, and some good points were being
made. threatening a fellow fan with violence or whatever is
NOT fruitful discussion; it is complete naziism. we are not
banded together in this loose affiliate to impose our moral
beliefs on each other, nor do we even have the right to do so.
insofar as whoever it was has a problem with bootlegging, they
should a. not request a copy for themselves; b. perhaps post
a controlled and reasonable message to all of us, so we can
decide for ourselves how to act; and then c. SHUT UP about it.
if you want to act responsibly, get on the "ask john" mission,
or provide us with some substantive reasons not to bootleg.
thank you
