Yes and no!
I was there! (full review at web page :) www.geocities.com/admars32)
From where I was standing (ground floor towards the back) during the last
song, my mates and i witnessed Mike Patton pull out his penis and start
pissing on the security/front row.
There are now rumours that it was a fake penis bought at one of the sex
shops in Soho (the Astoria in London where the gig took place in is Soho).
I've seen Mike Patton piss on stage twice before at FNM gigs, but both of
those times he sort of turned his back to the audience, and carried on
singing, almost as if he realised mid set he needed to go, but didn't want
to disturb the gig ;) Neither of those times he aimed at anyone! :)
So in short, I thought I saw him pissing, but it may/may not have been a sex
toy which squirts a liquid of the user's choice ;)

If anyone cares the gig was excellent :)

Hello Brian,
a good introduction for fado music would be albums by the bands:
- -Alos dos numerados (not really traditional fado but influenced; they have
two albums published on an international level)
- -Madredeus (this band is amazing. I have seen them a couple of times live in
Belgium and in Portugal and they still impress me very much. Traditionalists
would kill them, but frankly i do not care about that. They have the talent
to translate these melancholic texts and music into an audience of a totaly
different culture)
But let's be real: Just go to Portugal and (apart for the fucking
tourist-only fado bars) enter any local fado cafe. Everytime my wife and I
were invited to stay for dinner and were introduced to this beautiful music.
Anyway Brian, if you want a home-made compilation of fado music, just let me
know
Best wishes from the old continent

There are a few little moments of brilliance ("Night Diving", especially),
but for the most part it sounds like unused backing tracks for the new Cibo
Matto album. This is not necessarily a bad thing.

Hi,
The Clarinet reminds me of the excellent Japanese band Cicala Muta. As far
as I know they have only one album out - Ching Dong: The Return of Japanese
Street Music (Nektar). This also reminds me of Frisell's 'Rambler' because
the bass end is played on a tuba.
Talking of bands with tubas instead of (contra)bass(guitarists), did anyone
see Big Air (with Jim Black) on tour in the UK last year? Weren't they
brilliant! I'd love to know if they plan to put something out. Any ideas?

I don't know a lot about fado, either, but I quite like the new album
by Mariza, on Times Square. Very strong, warm, expressive voice. Some
of the songs aren't terribly memorable, however -- it's six classics and
six originals.

Subject: Another Zorn classical performance in NYC 6/1/02
Dear all:
Zorn's recent set of pieces 'Chimeras,' premiered late last year at
Bargemusic, will be performed again at New York's Merkin Concert Hall on
Saturday, June 1 at 9pm as part of the "Zoom - Composers Close Up" concert
series hosted by John Schaefer. Performers include Stephen Drury, Michael
Lowenstern, Jennifer Choi, Fred Sherry, William Winant and others. Tickets
cost $9 or pay-what-you-can. Merkin Concert Hall is located at 129 West 67th
St in Manhattan, just north of Lincoln Center.
Since Schaefer is hosting, it's possible that this performance is being
recorded for subsequent broadcast on WNYC - it's not, however, part of the
"New Sounds Live" series, so I don't think it will be webcast in real time.
If I learn anything more, I'll let you all know.
Just thought you'd like to know.

Subject: Re: Fado
Salut,
In France, young fado singer Cristina Branco is having quite a nice success
with her albums and concerts (compared to other fado singers, I mean).
She mostly sings originals, composed and arranged by her portuguese-guitar
player Cust=F3dio Castelo, with lyrics by portuguese poets. Instrumentation
is mostly traditional (guitar, double bass and portuguese guitar... but
some piano at times), but many songs clearly have a modern, pop
influence... being yet still far from Madredeus. Some say she sings both
"Old" and "New Fado", with reference to Piazzola's New Tango, modern while
deeply rooted into the tradition. Cristina' s voice is very touching, while
softer than that of Amalia Rodriguez, and then maybe more accessible.=20
She may therefore be a good artist to start with for an initiation to Fado
Music.
I like her album "Post Scriptum" on "L'Empreinte Digitale" (France) quite a
lot. She also has a more recent album ("Corpo Illuminado") on Universal
that is really nice. I haven't heard her first one. All of them seem to be
available in the US through big, popular, online CD retailers.

Don't know the band at all, but just thought I'd chime in with the fact that
CDnow has two albums listed, Ching Dong (1999) and Deko Boko (2002). The
latter includes pieces by Bartok and Ayler. Sounds like it would be very
interesting. No sound clips unfortunately... Incidentally they are listed as
Cicala Mvta, but that could be a mistake...

Are we talking about fado or portuguese music influenced by it??
Because I don't think Mariza, Madredeus and Ala dos Namorados qualify as
fado! If you're looking for new names listen to CamanΘ,..But I advise you to
stick to the classics if you want names:
Alfredo Marceneiro
Ercφlia Costa
Amßlia Rodrigues
Tristπo da Silva
Fernando Maurφcio
...check them out at:
http://lisboa.kpnqwest.pt/p/ouvir/fado/sons_fado.html
, or at this time of year go to coimbra were you can atenbd at live
serenatas for free!!
anyway, I'd advise you to put the fado aside and listen to Portuguese guitar
instrumentals of Virtuoso CARLOS PAREDES (he has an album with Charlie
Haden, very beautifull)
