  52. The one disc I would get it the CD of 'Ozma' on Boner, which also has the 
  53. entire 'Gluey Porch Treatments' album. Those are both from the late 80s. A 
  54. couple of the songs on the live FantomasMelvins album I remember being on 
  55. 'Houdini' -- that's great too (mainly the first half). Probably more 
  56. 'accessible' than the earlier stuff, but with some throwaway stuff near the 
  57. end, too.

  59. I might have been the one who said the first negative things about the 
  60. Melvins/Fantomas show a few weeks ago, although I didn't think I said 
  61. anything really all that negative, just that I saw that show and didn't feel 
  62. like I needed to get the CD.
  63.  
  64. One thing that bugged me about that show, and the Fantomas show I saw around 
  65. the time 'The Director's Cut' came out too, is how much material from the 
  66. first CD, which I don't really like all that much, although Patton sure has 
  67. gotten a lot of mileage out of it. I liked 'The Director's Cut' a lot more.

  69. I promise to shut up about the Melvins now.

  73. P.S. One more thing, on a semi-related note (in terms of weird, heavy, 
  74. not-quite metal rock stuff), the new Oxbow album, 'An Evil Heat', is great,

  236. Just had another listen to it when I read your post. Great stuff. As far as
  237. similar albums, you could check out some other Ben Goldberg stuff, often
  238. with similar musicians. Don't know the albums by name, but you could check
  239. http://trevordunn.n3.net/ (don't know whether Goldberg has his own site).
  240. For the more heavy stuff perhaps Trevor Dunn's album with Adam Levy and
  241. Kenny Wollesen "Debutantes & Centipedes". And of course the first Junk
  242. Genius but I assume you know that one already... Also, the steel guitar
  243. stuff reminded me of Tin Hat Trio's "Helium" but on the whole they're very
  244. different.

  286. KF and the line-up was Ben Goldberg, John Schott,
  287. Trevord Dunn and Kenny Wollesen. Right? I couldn't
  288. find any connections with the Frisell Trio, though. 
  289. I like "Light At the Crossroads" (Songlines) quite a
  290. lot. The lineup is the same but Marty Ehrlich replaces
  291. Schott on bass clarinet. Quite an enjoyable album and
  292. Dunn is superb on double-bass as are the two reedists.

  410. To some degree people like Parker and Rowe have developed such distinctive 
  411. styles that the listener knows exactly what to expect.  But, then each 
  412. brings that style to the duo situation, thus creating something new.  Parker 
  413. and Rowe are like old friends, I know ahead of time what they may say, but 
  414. I'm still interested.

  426. Well, I would agree that the Prevost set is a complete success, the Tilbury 
  427. a little less so.  I had a pretty good idea of what the recordings would 
  428. sound like before I ever heard them, but I'd say the same about Ellington, 
  429. Miles, the Beatles, Monk, Django...
