  402. Art used to be personal expression which passes the test of time (measured as
  403. raising interest beyond the usual ghetto, and complacent friends, and people
  404. having financial interest in it). These days people want art to be art just 
  405. based on will...

  407. On the other side, I tend to like more and more people who express themselves
  408. without the recourse to the heavy artillery called art.

  412. Talent is maybe not art (although I doubt you can make art without it), but
  413. a lot of alleged "art" these days is pure self-indulgent crap. At least if 
  414. people did not protect themselves behind the word art, could we be more 
  415. indulgent for their pathetic attempts...

  497. Messrs Kang, van der Schyff & Houle have produced a great rarity: the free
  498. improvised disc with near-zero dead spots, awkward transitions, or passages
  499. that go on long after the idea's been exhausted. What a joy this is, from
  500. start to finish. The variety is sumptuous: the range of instrument
  501. approaches, the ease from melody to dissonance and from arrhythmic meters to
  502. head-swaying grooves, and the constant resourcefulness of all three players.
  503. The album is filled with stunning sequences: the climax of #1, where Kang's
  504. violin and Houle's clarinet build up to a storm-warning siren; the opening
  505. of #2 (the aftermath?) with its dripping-rain notes from Kang and
  506. percussionist van der Schyff; the brief appearance of Houle's uncredited
  507. wood-flute; the switch to an Asian mode, with Kang's dancing-pitch bowing,
  508. which crosses with a Sephardic melody from Houle; the quiet flurry of
  509. Houle's circular-breathed low tones while Kang and Schyff explore their
  510. instruments' higher registers; Kang's canine whimpers... I could go on and
  511. on. The copyright on this disc says 1999, but if it's as new to you as it is
  512. to me, pick it up and see if doesn't make your best-of-2001 list. -James

  555. (since I was one of Shakira's more enthusiastic boosters) as I read Kaffa's
  556. descent from outrage to profane name-calling in response to one of Skip's
  557. more thoughtful and patient responses. And maybe I should just keep my mouth
  558. shut. But finally, I kept coming back to one line from Kaffa's first volley:

  629. Penn. I forget the title, but it's all new original material with the
