Based on my experience of three shows with his projects five years ago, I
think it was the most self-indulgent crap I have ever seen in my whole life.
I could not believe how bad it was and that's why I tried him again (convinced
that it could only be the result of a bad night). Never the expression "tech-
nical masturbation" had found such a perfect case to illustrate it. There was
no music, no feeling, just a set of songs built the same (totally uninspired),
with in the middle Buckethead throwing the most ackneyed cliches of speed
metal guitar playing. How can somebody with such technical skills can be so
empty might be an interesting topic for a PhD.
On the other side, I kind of like him in contexts where he is a guest (like
with Laswell, of a great Painkiller show at the KF).
Patrice.

I'm not even 30 and I'm an old-timer already... sweet! I was just curious
about concrete examples because you sound like you're coming from more of a
jazz/improv/experimental direction, and while I find it easy to think of
rock ripoffs, it's a little tougher with the Highbrow Stuff. A case could
be made for some early Ayler stuff, like "Witches and Devils," standing way
back in Ornette's shadow. But he moved on to other things, some better,
some worse.

And unfortunately, Nonesuch's planned recording of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire with her a few years ago fell by the wayside somewhere, as did a planned jazz disc for Bar/None which would have included Lake and other heavies.

Was that the show where part of his solo was sticking the end of the guitar chord in his mouth? The one where Mick Harris tried to get Lee Dorrian to come up out of the audience and join them \\\"for old times\\\' sake,\\\" to no avail?
LASWELL: [deadpan] So much for old times\\\' sake.

It is the same April Shower released from EWE in 2001. AMAIK, EWE is more
or less a "domestic" label without particular distributors/agents outside of
Japan, so April Shower is re-released from BUZZ to reach the international
listeners/market. It is a must CD, and we've been playing it on and off
quite often. Fluid and passionate.
The itinerary for the US tour is as follows (from Satoko's HP @
http://www2s.biglobe.ne.jp/~Libra/ ). The quartet is the one on Vulcan,
Fujii piano, Natsuki Tamura on trumpet, Takeharu Hayakawa on bass, and
Tatsuya Yoshida on drums.

Yet another coincidence during this ongoing thread... I went over to Other Music tonight at about 7:30 to pick up an Aesop Rock CD just to see what all the fuss is about. There's a line out the door and halfway around the block, and it quickly becomes clear that they're trying to hustle people out of the store, while setting up a P.A. and some turntables.
Turned out to be a free live in-store by Aesop Rock, approaching at 8pm.
Sadly, I couldn't stay, so I purchased his new EP 'Daylight' and the cLOUDDEAD CD and the new issue of The Wire, and moseyed back to the office. Weird, huh?
Oh, I liked the CD.

NP - tedious, lengthy blank space prior to the hidden track on 'Daylight,' I assume... oh, wait, was that a spoiler?
