Can't talk for Braxton, but Lacy expects some money in advance. Even with the
infamous BYG records from the late sixties, Lacy got paid, but only once (and
I guess it was not a lot). Is he making money with these records? A quick
evaluation of the number of records he put out in the past years multiplied
by the money he received for them (guess), that will add up to a nice number
for pocket money, but not enough to sustain a living.

Well it also seems that artists just seem to enjoy staying with them. Anyone
got a contact in Matador A&R? ;)

I just know they have every little thing to do with Iannis Xenakis, gangsta rap,
Indian Carnatic music, Cecil Taylor, hillbilly, Weather Report, Orson Welles,
Jewish and Hutu Radical cultures, and above all, The Axis of Evil.

...but only one track! I just bought a DVD called "The Jazz Club Highlights
1990" (sic!) TDK Recording Media Europe S.A (c) 2001. The Naked City track
is very slow, I can't recognise it, although I'm pretty familiar with their
live repertoire. It's called "Mystery Song" but I'm sure it's not the real
title, the producer probably coundn't recognise the title either. Apart from
NC you can see Steps Ahead, Archie Shepp, Mike Stern, Petrucciani... It was
recorded during "Haus Jazz Tage, Ostern 1990". Look at some screenshots at

Brassens is a very fine poet/songwriter, with cleverly woven medieval and
mythological references (if you understand french)=2E
His own singing and guitar playing, though, are a bit monotonous and gruffy,
though, imho=2E
Barbara spent years singing his songs (and Brel's) before she found her own
songwriting voice, and the Philips/Polygram Vol=2E2 (1960/61/62) "Barbara ch=

e
superb, she totally fulfills his songs' melifluent potential (her "Penelope"
is bliss)=2E
This just to suggest you might want to kill 2 birds with 1 stone by getting
this cd: as an intro to the world of Brassens, with great Barbara singing=2E
Leo Ferre is also a very fine poet/songwriter, more combatively anarchist in
his texts, emotional in his singing=2E His voice has a vulnerable quality,
reminiscent in some ways of Willie Nelson's or Neil Young's=2E His most famo=

song "Avec le temps" is intense and beautiful but not recommended for the

I don't happen to know of the right cd to recommend, but his 60's work
(including the aforementioned song) is generally considered classic (I don't
think you can go wrong there or with a "best of"-type cd either)=2E

The 1994 live cd "Tour de Charme" has most of her best songs and gives a ver=

She's the star of an upcoming film by Claude Lelouch, her first: "And now,

First of all, I was wondering if anyone knew where to get this live DVD or
any other live Naked City performances (DVD or VHS). Second (and a trivial
matter I might add) is that I first saw John Zorn live about 2 years ago. He
was wearing camouflage pants. In the next 8 or so times I saw him, he had
the same pants on. About a year ago, I saw a picture of him in the NY Times
and he had the pants on again. I just looked at the pics on the website
recommended of the Naked City live from 1990. Guess what? He is wearing the
pants.

Brassens appears to me like a product that would suffer export. The emphasis
on texts is really strong with him and because of the total lack of flashiness
in the music (usually acoustic guitar and stand up bass) I am not too sure how
people who don't understand him would react (in fact I know a little bit
because I sneaked some of his songs on tapes, and nobody really paid atten-
tion).

Ferre's delivery is so strong that I can imagine liking him without under-
standing him. In fact, Ferre even had a record in the late sixties with a
rock band (Zao?).

He has two pairs of these pants. Basically it works like that: when he is
wearing pair A, pair B is usually at the dry cleaner on E. 7th St. I did not
verify but according to some rumours, the same seems to apply when he is
wearing pair B (read: pair A is at the dry cleaner). Unfortunately I have not
been able to gather the same level of information concerning the T-shirts.

Zach,
Accessibility is another of those nebulous qualities, y'know. I'll
probably get in trouble for saying this, but I wouldn't worry too much
about accessibility - if you can afford to book someone you really believe
in, go for it. If the Phish fans on campus are mad that you brought some
wailing free-jazz group, they can get it together and bring Phish
themselves. When I was in college, I was more interested in noise-rock,
but we managed to get some great bands (Cows, Doo Rag) out to isolated
Santa Fe. Sure, there were only a few Cows fans on campus, but we raised
the money and booked the bands and there was nothing stopping others from
doing the same; they just didn't care enough to do it.
You might see if Matt W from Colorado College will correspond with you
about this, since he seems to be connected with CC's recent parade of
world-class improvisors. There are a few organizations in the Bay Area
that put on lots of experimental/improv concerts, and I'd imagine they'd be
happy to give you some tips. TUVA Space may be reached at
acme@sfSound.org, and the Luggage Store Gallery's concert series is run by
Ernesto Diaz-Infante, I think, itzat@earthlink.net.
Good luck!

Since my sarcasm detector is low on batteries today, I'm going to go ahead
and say that it was not my intention to imply that the opinions of Black
and/or Speed should warrant Bjork some reconsideration from any members of
this esteemed list (hell, Zorn probably *loves* the Shaggs, which doesn't
mean I wouldn't still blast each and every one of their CDs into space
given the opportunity). Rather, as I put it in a private email to Ken
Waxman, it should give the fans in the house a great Bjork album to ponder.
That is all.
So, um, how about that Buckethead, eh?
