  220. Their early stuff with Miroslav Vitous still amazes me some 30 years later.  
  221. The first WR, I Sing the Body, Sweetnighter, and Live in Tokyo are, to me, 
  222. the best of WR.  This was pre-synth, Z could pull some stuff out of that 
  223. piano, both acoustic and electric. The band really changed when Miroslav 
  224. left and Al Johnson took over.  Zawinul states openly in his new book that 
  225. he was looking for a funkier (ie consumer friendly) sound that Miroslav just 
  226. didn't have in him.  The next few, including Mysterious Traveler, Heavy, 
  227. Market, are all excellent, but certainly different from what came before.  
  228. Electric bass, less space.  Jaco was a huge influence on the band, and when 
  229. he departed they changed again.  Zawinul seemed to take over complete 
  230. control and Shorter receded into the background.  Their last few efforts 
  231. were, well, just fair.
  232.  
  233. Having seen them perform live every time they visited Philly, I must say 
  234. that none of their recordings ever matched the intensity that the live shows 
  235. displayed.  I think the first or second time they came around the band 
  236. included Wayne, Z, Johnson, Dom Um Romao, and Chester Thompson.  This 
  237. unlikely combo was quite intense.  Later shows with Jaco in larger venues 
  238. (like the Tower at 69th Street) were more "show biz" but the music never 
  239. faltered.  There are lots of live recordings floating around that testify to 
  240. the greatness of the band, right up until the end.  I just listened to a 
  241. live show from 1984, and the band still was cooking.
  242.  
  243. To say they were crap is both misinformed and ignorant.  Their roots go back 
  244. quite far (ie Shorter, Z) not only influencing Miles (Silent Way etc) but 
  245. Blakey, Adderley, and just about anything that followed.  Let's remember 
  246. that Wayne and Z's compositions dominated Miles' albums during the late 60s 
  247. period.
  248.  
  249. The term fusion wasn't thrown around so negatively back then.  Most of the 
  250. more popular bands like RTF, Headhunters, etc sound pretty dated now.  But I 
  251. still dig WR and Mahavishnu.
  252.  
  253. BTW, Skip, Ornette is still big on my playlist.  The Atlantic box set is on 
  254. my Desert Island list, though my kids wouldn't agree.

  344. Barbaros Erkose lately.  A particularly good CD (in my opinion, anyway) is
  345. Anouar Brahem's Astrakan Cafe, on which Erkose plays.  Great mix of North

  361. Wanted to mention just how much I am enjoying this
  362. utterly tweaked pop delight, called POINT.  I was only
  363. familiar with two (?) previous CDs of remixes from
  364. maybe a few years ago, which covered a lot of
  365. territory and were unfailingly eccentric.  This
  366. record---I've listened to it several times, but not
  367. consulted the lyric sheet or any reviews yet---is a
  368. thoroughly chopped, crawling-with-edits, collaged-out,
  369. and field-recording-spiced take on drone-pop,
  370. electronic dance, and Brasilian music, arranged as a
  371. continuous album; I'm tempted to think of it as a
  372. suite.  The word "point" seems to appear and re-appear
  373. throughout the record in a pointed fashion, almost
  374. like a marker of sorts, noticeably at the beginning
  375. (track 2), middle (track 7) and end (last track?). 
  376. The vocals are often harmonized into this sticky-sweet
  377. lushness that rankled me a little at first, until I
  378. relaized that I wasn't quite sure what I was hearing. 
  379. He also covers (IIRC) the same loopy pop ballad that
  380. appears at the beginning and end of Terry Gilliam's
  381. BRASIL, albeit with vocorder (yikes!) in place.  I've
  382. heard a fair amount of collage pop, and Japanese
  383. collage pop in particular, and this would seem to be a
  384. greater accomplishment.  The synthesis of styles is
  385. just so unpredictable and fluid, with bird sounds
  386. exploding Trvor Wishart-style out of percussion,
  387. lyrics being edited from one set of words into another
  388. (okay, I'm not totally sure about that one, but...),
  389. and percussion and guitar lines being assembled so
  390. beautifully into this absolutely grooving mosaic; it
  391. will be a great spring/summer album, as will be the
  392. new Wilco.  What's special lies between the edits. 
  393. It's edit-pop!  Highly recommended.

  463. Like VU, TG were significant as a bridge between fine-art and pop-music 
  464. practices. Much of what they've done has been copied to death, 
  465. unfortunately; that shouldn't be allowed to depreciate their achievement.

  467. Among other things, Industrial Records was the freshest thing happening in 
  468. British music at the time. Punk was just rock'n'roll played badly for the 
  469. middle classes. Of course the latter, because it's more "accessible" and 
  470. money talks anyway, cops all the attention and posthumous adulation. This, 
  471. too, shouldn't be allowed to depreciate TG's achievement.

  473. There are few sources of information on the band, fewer still without a 
  474. strong bias. For example, Gen's archieved a ton of stuff at New Way On 
  475. (<www.genesisp-orridge.com>), but it's very self-aggrandizing. I think one 
  476. of the strongest aspects of Ford's book is precisely that it maintains a 
  477. relatively clinical narrative.

  574. In general, you can assume that whatever you see in the Stockhausen Verlag
  575. catalog that was originally on DGG is the same recording, although not
  576. everything that was on DGG has been reissued.

  578. Isn't it the LP album Ensemble that Stockhausen won't accept in his
  579. discography, because that was a joint collaboration/ improv? I have a
  580. cassette of the old vinyl, and since this 'work' never pops up in recent
  581. biographies, I assume it will be lost for future cd release.

  583. In the history of Improvised music, that wuld be a loss. Around the time of
  584. 'ensemble' (sixties), concerts were given under the 'Stockhausen Group'
  585. flag. Many psychedelic musicians saw those shows, culminating in the Osaka
  586. World Exhibition (1970-ish). Stockhausen once calculated that more visitors
  587. must have attended his Osaka Pavillion than Woodstock...

  602. I think some too-clever-by-half eager to display their herky-jerky chops 
  603. were called "jazz-punk" for a while, Victims Family being the 
  604. archetype.  The Minutemen and the Birthday Party sound much jazzier to my 
  605. ears, though I think both groups were too witty to call themselves 
  606. "jazz-punk."  If my memory of a mid-80s SST catalog is accurate, I think 
  607. there is a Minutemen videotape called "Corndogs" which includes a jam w/ 
  608. "Ornette Coleman's rhythm section," presumably Charlie Haden and Billy 
  609. Higgins.  Has anyone seen this?

  622. i've been on a shorter binge the last week -- his blue notes with morgan,
  623. both with the messengers and on his own, an a couple quick forays to the
  624. miles archives. i've been listening to shorter for a couple of decades now,
  625. and it's still the dance of the seven veils ... more and more revealed the
  626. more i listen.

  628. shorter was famously minimalist with weather report, which some people have
  629. laid on zawinul. as far as i know, shorter never complained. it was sure
  630. easy to long for his out and out improvs, but it's hard to imagine that
  631. even in this minimalist way that he wasn't having a substantial influence
  632. on weather report's sound, beyond his bird chirping soprano and other
  633. short-winded asides.
