There was an episode of the Simpsons where Homer and Lisa spent some
time in a pair of sensory tanks. While Lisa had some interesting
dreams, Homer's tank ended up going on a journey. If I remember
correctly, it went through a sewer, into the ocean where it washed up on
the beach and at some point was buried. It eventually made it's way
back where it started with Homer never knowing that it had left. Ouch...

Anticon is actually based (or at least was started) in the Bay Area,
if I'm not mistaken, although the people they include as members hail
from all over (Dose, Jel, Why?, and Odd Nosdam are some of the central/
founding figures). They've even got folks like Buck65 & Sixtoo from good
ol' Nova Scotia in with 'em now. Slug belongs more with the Rhymesayers
folks (Atmosphere, specifically), out of Minneapolis, but this group
gets lumped in with Anticon a lot. Deep Puddle & the Shape Shifters
are also more closely allied with Rhymesayers, are they not? Anyway,
not trying to provide an opposing opinion on purpose, but I find much
of this stuff (as I said in a prior message) uninteresting, and way
overrated. Some Slug/Atmosphere stuff is OK. Sole is hit or miss
for me. cDEAD, maybe the Them LP, the Dose One/Boom Bip, Mr. Dibbs,
and a decent amount of Buck65 is all I take away. When it comes
to El-P (Def Jux & friends) vs. Sole (Anticon & friends), as it did
(in battle form) a couple years ago, I'll take El-P and the NY scene,
_and_ the Quannum/Stones Throw/Project Blowed west coast stuff over
anything Anticon related.

Subject: Games Pieces
A short while ago there was another discussion on the nature of the games
pieces. While using Google to trawl through some of the Usergroups I came
upon an article by a guy reporting what it was like to rehearse and perform
in a games piece under the direction of John Zorn.
The article is not a complete explanation of how a games piece works but it
is a first hand account of one guy's experience albeit a long time ago.
The details are:
Joe Hellerstein posted by John Eichenseer on 1990-10-25 to
rec.music.synth, rec.music.bluenote
Now at 1,500 words I feel Mr Rizzi would go ape if I posted here but if
anybody is interested mail me privately and I will forward a copy.

For me Live In Tokyo is the one. This is an early version of the band
tearing it up in 1972. Close to (dare I use the phrase?) free jazz at times.
But then I have always been a sucker for a Fender Rhodes through a
distortion pedal and ring modulator (see Chick Corea on the recent Live
Miles).

Hi boys & girls.
The latest issue of "du" magazine from switzerland (www.dumag.ch), a
publication that has a great reputation, is dedicated to Charles Mingus.
Unfortunately, it is only available in German.
Thought some of you might be interested.
They also released an inexpensive 6 CD Box Set of some of Mingus'
albums; don't know whether they'll ship internationally.

HI,
Some words from Zorn on the Naked City period and his dismissal from =
Elektra/Nonesuch. I had never realized about that "Lonely Woman" =
anecdote!:
JZ: Naked City was a band that I could go on the road with, where I =
could do everything that I hadn=92t done. The first concerts were at the =
old Knitting Factory, on ....??....... St. and we were standing outside =
waiting to start rehearsing. I talked about doing a cover of some Ornete =
Coleman=92s stuff and Fred Frith said =93Oh, yeah, what about that tune, =
Pretty Woman? I can make that slip at the top!=94 And I said: Oh, yeah, =
of course. We=92re gonna do that at the same time as Lonely Woman! Just =
kind of as a joke!.
JZ: What a beautiful cover. I can=92t imagine they had a problem with a =
dissected head sitting on a soup plate! (laughs) But they did, in =
addition to everything else that=92s going on in this record. But Bob =
Horwitz- bless his heart-, who was the executive producer of Nonesuch =
was very uncomfortable with the place that I was going. A lot of people =
were uncomfortable with the place that I was going. But I have to follow =
my vision, wherever it goes. And if it goes to some dark places, so be =
it.
JZ: I remember they called me in to Chris Donald=92s office. He was the =
president- he was the guy who discovered Captain Beefheart. They called =
me in to his office, and he sat me down and said: =93Zorn, what do you =
wanna do with your career? What are you trying to do?=94 I said: =93Fuck =
my career! I=92m trying to make some music! And I=92ve gotta do what =
I=92ve gotta do.=94 And within three minutes I was in the elevator going =
down. (laughs) What happened? I don=92t know how it happened but I was =
out of there! This guy didn=92t even know what I was talking about. =
(...) They want someone who=92s gonna be a poster-boy for postmodernism =
and I wasn=92t gonna play that game.=20

JZ: Every Jewish=92s gotta come to grips with the Holocaust in some kind =
of way. And that (Kristallnacht) was my statement, that=92s how I did =
it. I don=92t need to do it again. I did it and it meant a lot to me. It =
was like a whole lifetime of denying my Jewish heritage coming out in =
one piece.
JZ: (On the Munich Jewish Festival) I decided to do a night of new =
Jewish music, radical Jewish music. Something different, something that =
wasn=92t just klezmer but was Jewish for other reasons, maybe ineffable =
reasons, maybe questionable reasons. It was something I wanted to =
explore.
- JZ: (On Masada) These tunes, for me, belong to the Jewish tradition. =
They can be done by any kind of group. They could be done by a hardcore =
band. It=92s only related to jazz because it=92s got this kind of a =
jazz line and we=92re kind of using jazz language in our interpretation =
of the tunes. But these are tunes that could be played at Jewish =
weddings!
- - BERESFORD: Well, you could try!
JZ: The last thing I wanted to do is start a record company. But =
practically, I think the only way an artist can survive in this society =
and retain 100% credibility, integrity and self-respect is =
do-it-yourself (...) So I started Tzadik records. (...) It couldn=92t be =
more different than a major corporation. It=92s incredibly =

go into making the record are paid up first and then we split the =
profits. Everybody gets the same budget. Every record on Tzadik is made =
for 5,000 dollars. And this is esoteric music, it=92s not gonna sell a =
lot of copies. But nevertheless, we have records that have sold 35,000 =
copies on our label. And others that have only sold less than a =
thousand. But the balances are in a good place.=20
JZ: I don't really have those wild dreams that I wanna do this or I =
wanna do that. I'm very pragmatic, I work with the people that are =
available to me. I will continue to do improv concerts, I will continue =
to make music with the Masada band, I will make file-card pieces. =
