  67. In fact there are many female list members, but we are not in the vocal
  68. majority. The topic of avant-girls was discussed on the list at length
  69. about two years ago. I remember one of the subject lines: "no girls
  70. allowed." The discussion was quite interesting, should you wish to check
  71. the Zorn list archives.

  73. Zorn's outlook on elitism is a sensitive issue. He does not discriminate
  74. between high/low art and conservatory-trained/self-taught. Nor should
  75. we, in my opinion. Think of the contrasting influences he cites,
  76. everything from Albert Ayler to Japanese hardcore like G.I.S.M. While
  77. Zorn did study music formally, he is largely self-taught. His on-going
  78. passion for the pursuit of knowledge, beyond school, is significant. In
  79. the past few years his work has indeed received recognition among peer
  80. composers and so-called elitist institutions. Yet he continues to
  81. embrace a wide variety of musics, even if prominent establishments do
  82. not.

  182. Super Keepers, if you like that kind of thing.  Kevin
  183. Drumm's sucking-scrape-pan-and-warble guttering-candle
  184. prepared guitar is the star on much of both.

  189. I'd really like to know about these records.  I read
  190. an eloquent but unhelpful review of the first
  191. elsewhere, and I can imagine what the second would
  192. sound like, but any help would be appreciated.  Is
  193. DOUBLE WASH essential if I already have the
  194. Marchetti/Werchowski/Noetinger (which I like) and the
  195. Otomo Yoshihide and Voice Crack on Erstwhile (not
  196. mention several Voice Crack records)?  I'm asking
  197. because my bank account can't handle much more
  198. redundancy.  The Poire_Z PRESQUE CHIC, for example, is
  199. a good record, but I found it rather inessetial
  200. compared to their self-titled first record; the two
  201. are simply not must-haves in one collections, not with
  202. so much else to check out.
  203.  
  204. Finally, a recommendation:
  205. Speaking of Erstwhile, that new Ielasi/Sciajno, RIGHT
  206. AFTER, is a skittering, sly, concretish masterpiece;
  207. if indeed the whole record was cut "live", I'm all the
  208. more floored.  I want to know how they do it.  For,
  209. say, Kevin Drumm fans, I would say the record is the
  210. next step: it's _essential_.  It's not exactly easy
  211. listening, but from those flailing tendrils of
  212. ultra-high frequencies at the beginning to the
  213. recurring cut-ups later on the record, it's a
  214. vertiginous listening experience, and it seems to be
  215. bearing up well under repeated visits.  Damned good,
  216. and not without a sense of athletics and humor.

  244. really like (I will admit to not hearing all of them in some time), & I don't 
  245. see how you can recommend the extremely spotty Live In Japan (??) (The one 
  246. with "Big Boss Man" on it) over it.

  249. "four big egos on a stage" (as someone I met who liked them & saw them play 
  250. once referred to them to me) like all of their other albums - all of which

  273. And very similar to Zappa, he is recognized for what, I think, is not the most
  274. original (groundbreaking) part of his production. What he does in the 
  275. "classical contemporary" style fits well with the expectations of the genre 
  276. (which still tries to maintain its high-brow attitude -- we are not entertain-
  277. ment, even when most of the interesting experimental music is coming outside
  278. of academia). But like for Zappa, I have a hard time to see what his recent 
  279. and polite compositions (when you look at the past 50 years of earth shatte-
  280. ring experiments by Stockhausen, Kagel, Xenakis, Cage, etc) bring the table of 
  281. creativity compared to what he did in the late 70's, all 80's, and very early
  282. 90's. They are pleasant, but where is the fist in the face of ARCHERY, LOCUS
  283. SOLUS, SPILLANE, THE BIG GUNDOWN?
  284.  
  285. But I don't expect Pierre Boulez to listen to FREAK OUT :-).

  306. i haven't had the chance to see them live, but Wolf
  307. Eyes' recordings are fantastic. the s/t CD [bulb],
  308. dread LP [hanson], and Wolf Eyes w/ Spykes CD-R
  309. [hanson] are among my favorite releases of the year. a
  310. brilliant mix of drum machines, cracked electronics,
  311. guitars, and noise squeezed into song-form. their
  312. claim of sounding like "suicide meets throbbing
  313. gristle and bon jovi" is actually pretty accurate.

  341. I haven't heard that comp, but this collaboration doesn't have much empty 
  342. space compared to the other R&G disc I have.  I was surprised at how busy 
  343. and dynamic it was, actually.  Yet it's not abrasive noise (not that there's 
  344. anything wrong with that).  Quite good.

  355. Yes I have that too, and it almost made the list, but like I said there was 
  356. already tons of other great stuff on there.  The only complaint I have about 
  357. that disc is that after a few listens it tends to be a little too even as 
  358. the range of tones is pretty much the same over all 78 tracks.  But it 
  359. functions well as one 22 minute track, if you take it that way, and it's fun 
  360. at random too as you mentionned.

  377. Human Feel album did have bass, then the other two didn't. The one I have,
  378. "Welcome To Malpesta" has no bass and no tunes written by Jim Black. The
  379. other two albums both do though...

  579. And what about DVDs? Well, this year looks like it's a year for DAVID LYNCH
  580. fans.  The TWIN PEAKS pilot was released in Hong Kong (Region 0), ELEPHANT
  581. MAN was released just a few days ago, and yesterday the complete first
  582. season of TWIN PEAKS (minus the pilot) was released.

  584. David Lynch's webpage opened this month. In january you will be able to buy
  585. the DVDs for ERASERHEAD, his SHORT FILMS and a new CD of a band called BLUE
  586. BOB (David Lynch and John neff, his sound engineer).  It sounds like the
  587. song THE PINK ROOM from the "Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me" soundtrack.
  588. Oh, and this movie will be released in february in DVD.  Lots of money to
  589. spend for LYNCH fans.

  622. training, since i go to school where he went for those first whiles of 
  623. college and study with his teacher.  bob chamberlin, said composition 
  624. teacher, would no less agree on all points.  i think composing is largely a 
  625. self-taught subject anyways, with little more than "counselling" happening 
  626. from the composition teacher.  and a lot of the self-taught composers i know 
  627. and know of are way more interesting than people who can analyse milton 
  628. babbitt out of a paper bag a la alan forte.
