  168. No/ Yes. I said Down Home, Barondown is a different story, I have no idea
  169. how much credit you must give to the horn guys in arranging the pieces.

  171. Baron's DOWN HOME group, and Killer Joey are family though, and easy to pin
  172. down to some sort of writing style. It's nothing really fancy for the
  173. greatest drummer in the world, these are mainly fun groups: friendly
  174. grooving souljazzy pieces, sometimes even bluesy. Nothing dangerous.

  176. As said, I play these records with lots of pleasure, but I won't go a long
  177. way defending them. It's just soul jazz, and with good soloists, like Arthur
  178. Blythe or Amina Claudine Meyers. Bassplayer Tony Scherr is always hired to
  179. get a solid groove down, so he's in both groups if I recall rightly.

  181. They are fun to check out if they are in your neighborhood, they have a
  182. cool, ever smiling drummer as a leader, nothing more, nothing less.

  204. Joey's writing.

  211. Joey's a very friendly guy.  And I think his role in almost every group in
  212. which he's played has been to bring that user-friendly vibe to all kinds of
  213. "dangerous" projects, ie Masada, Tim Berne etc.  His playing is amazing in
  214. that he is one of the most risk-oriented, daring players in the world, but
  215. he also makes it enjoyable for people who are usually put off by that kind
  216. of playing.  Testimony is available fr a handfull of old girlfriends I took
  217. to see Frisell, Naked City, etc -- no matter how much they didn't like
  218. anything else about the shows, they LOVED Joey.

  225. Is "soul jazz" less worthy than the usual tripe-o-phonic contriv-o-matic
  226. post-Ornette/post-Miles/post-modern posturing that passes for new music
  227. these days? Joey grew up in Richmond, largely playing rhythm'n'blues.  It
  228. would probably not be honest for him to foresake that when he's playing Joey
  229. Baron music.  Moreover, it wouldn't dawn on him.  Joey is one of the few
  230. guys I've ever known who really understands Johnny "Guitar" Watson's genius.

  287. have the tzadik album "cathode" and his duo with christian marclay "moving
  288. parts", as well as having seen him live once with gunther muller and carlos
  289. zingaro (that's when i first heard of him, how ogrenant of me :)).
  290. having made a search on the web, i found out he's quite a prolific musician,

  403. His signifigance is that he was just a fantastic player and singer, no
  404. matter what period of his career you look into.  Get the comp of his 50s
  405. work, HOT JUST LIKE TNT (Ace), then cut to the Best Of comp of his seventies
  406. funk stuff (on Collectables).  Of particular interest -- the guitar solos on
  407. "Three Hrs Past Midnight" and the famous one-note solo on "Lonely Lonely
  408. Nights".  BTW -- do not get the comp entitled THREE HOURS PAST MIDNIGHT, and
  409. it contains inferior alt takes.

  642. I've heard him with David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness. You can find him in
  643. his both releases for Tzadik and his latest through the French Label Bleu.
  644. As far as I recall (haven't played them for awhile), he provided the group
  645. an expressive funk guitar sound that made a good contrast with the klezmer
  646. stuff. However, I don't know what to think about him sitting in for Marc
  647. Ribot in this new Masada electric version. Does anyone here think Rogers' at
  648. such a high level? I just find him correct, but never superb.

  650. You can also hear him in Norman Yamada's "Being and Time" (Tzadik). Can't
  651. tell you much about Rogers' playing here except that the whole record is one
  652. of the most boring things I've listened to from Zorn's label. I didn't pay
  653. too much attention to the players' contributions, although all of them are
  654. superb (Ribot, Mark Stewart, Wieselman, Chris Lightcap, etc...)
