It's quite good... a combination of duets and solos.
My colleague Marc Chenard has a review of it coming up in Coda magazine,
though I'm not sure which issue.
Not sure where it's available, but it's on EWE.

There is a nice article on Mike Patton on www.cmj.com. It's not the
greatest, but it is right off of the front page. It's all about what Mr.
Patton has been up to recently. Talks about Tomahawk, Fantomas, Peeping
Tom, and his "acting career."
By the way, what do those of you who have seen Tomahawk in concert think? I
enjoyed the concert much more than the album.

Subject: About Grains of Paradise
Hi,
Last week someone recommended Erik Frielander's
"Grains of Paradise". I'd like to provide my 2 cents
on that release.
Stating that it is a bad record would be absolutely
false. However, the lack of originality made me forget
about it really quick. Grains is certainly for Bar
Kokhba fans (which I am) but there is something in it
that makes the music somehow predictable. The melodies
are extremely pompous, and despite it manages to stirr
up something, Friedlander could probably take more
advantage of such a good ensemble. BTW, although it is
presented as cello, percussion, guitar, bass and ten
violins, there are actually 3 only(?).
Don't misunderstand me, it's a good record, but don't
expect something new. Just beautiful music (which is a
lot).
Just an opinion.
Best,
EfrΘn del Valle

The record has some piano solo's and some piano violin duo's. But it has
also a few duo's "Piano + Piano". Does that mean Satoko Fujii's overdubbing
herself? Or is Feldman a great "hole-and-corner" pianist? Unfortunately
there's no answer in the liner notes...

Actually, there is a TV show in Portugal that's called "Potugal =

Yep, the piano + piano is Satoko Fujii playing a duet with herself ala Bill
Evan's
Conversations With Myself. The tracks with Mark Feldman are actually from
a different session. Since someone asked, it is available from
cadencebuilding.com
or vergemusic.com. If you still have problems let me know, there are other
ways to get it.
It's one of my favorite CDs of the year... James

Hi,
I'm listening to that Cd right now. It sounds good. Nothing specially
original or Zorn-list related at all but it's just fine. Patton & Charles
are both superb on vocals, as usual. The production is good, but too many
hip-hop bases for my taste.
I'm not sure whether this is due to Patton fanatism, but I'm enjoying the
album. Don't expect anything out of this earth, anyway. We'll have to wait
for the next Fant⌠mas.
In any case, this "music to make love to your old lady by", might be
helpful! (if I had one)
I don't think that Peeping Tom hit the streets yet. I searched for that
record through several websites and no news. As far as I know, it's Patton's
pop project. If Peeping's pop is like that of "California", it's more than
welcome.
Best,
EfrΘn del Valle

From the little of the demos that leaked out, I don't think it's going to be
quite like "California" - it sounds like it's more his take on the modern
pop scene - like Bjork or Beck, stuff like that, but obviously a bit
quirkier...

Personally, I wouldn't mind if the responses to travel questions was posted

that sort of thing, I've created a new folder for it.
And it is usually musically related, non? i.e. record stores, concerts,

So I special ordered the mmw live electric tonic web release, it is
from 07.04.98 during tonic's first curated music series [by zorn] Ah,
the good old days when tonic didnt serve alcohol, no ac, I dont think
they really had a stage either. I was at the gig and remembered liking
it, so I got the album.
Well, tastes change over time and exposure, the whole disc is mostly
improvised which is nice. Some of the developments are really fun,
there is a blend of mmw style outness and their gratifying grooves, it
flows nicely. The sound is good, not as rich as the acoustic tonic
album, it still sounds like tonic to me. I feel like billy martin was a
little rusty, but he still delivers a decent laid back punch now and
then. This live album brings up some associations with Farmer's Reserve
[now if you were an mmw dork like me at one time, you picked this up]
There are similar textural colorings and musical conversations
happening. Overall its a fun listen but nothing extraordinary, if you
are on top of all the mmw you might want to pick it up. Its also a nice
piece of tonic history.

Related to my last post, getting home sick for things nyc, tonic being
a huge part of that. I was wondering what was the first downtown music
gig at tonic? I remember seeing brad shepik and the commuters at tonic.
Most of the people I brought left due to the non-alcoholic atmosphere.
On the shepik and the commuters tip, they used to play at the bell
cafe, now the bell closed a year ago, anyone know what ended up
happening over there?
