So, this is supposed to be a classical concert, where you would expect 'Bar
Kokhba/ Issachar/ Circle Maker' adaptations of Masada tunes.
However, above is the full 1994 European Masada line-up, when Joey couldn't
come over to tour. There's a German TV broadcast of this particular group,
some dumbass lost the videocassette I had borrowed him.
(for all you anoraks out there: I am not really sure it was '94 or '95 when
Wollesen was subbing for Baron)

Subject: Mike Patton and Dan The Automator
I was recently told about a project that Mike Patton was doing with Dan the
Automator. Does anyone know about this project? And I just recently picked up
an album by The Avalanches. I believe they're from Australia. Does anybody have
ninformation on them. From the album lining, I noticed they're massive sampling
references and was wondering if the peeps had done anything else.

It is a fairly sweet record, much smoother (possible?) than other projects
by Dan the Automator. Great record to accompany a martini.

Boom Book Ignorant.
The "Lovage" album is o.k. .... you'll probably dig it if you like Automator
production and patton vocals. The girl singer (jennifer from Elysian Fields)
has a great, seductive voice. The best track on the album is their cover of
Berlin's "Sex (I'm a)", and it features the best moaning and groaning since
Serge and Brigitte did "Je t'aime" :)
The Avalanches record is, again, "o.k."- not good, not bad, but just decent.
It's a good pop record that shifts between typical house and downtempo, but
the samples are fun to spot. The whole mix, though, is just noisy..."too much
going on" at any given time, if you will. I don't think the people have been
involved in any other noteworthy stuff.

I read somewhere that the Mike Patton / Dan the Automator collaboration is
called PEEPING TOM and that it's Patton's commercial comeback (if you call
FNM commercial). Anyway, they already have a contract with REPRISE RECORDS,
so this is obviously a major label/commercial thing. I think I also read it
sounded something like BECK!!! They're planning on releasing an album in
mid 2002.
If you look for Peeping Tom in Audiogalaxy.com, you'll find the demos that
Patton did all by himself. It sounds very rough and I can't really say if I
like it or not.

It will definitely be hard for anyone to produce sthg like Torture Garden,
won't it?. The supposed similarities are maybe more a simple reference than
actual shared settings.

I like the second one too, but I don't agree with any comparisons between
both. I don't see a direct relation between the contents of "Amenaza..." and
"The Director's Cut". Although this may seem obvious, I thought that the
covers would be much more edgy but they seemed somehow "lazy" to me. I love
the album, anyway, and it will appear in my "Best of 2001" list, that's for
sure.

Their first album really shocked me. I had never heard such a thing for my
taste then, but I think that their richest album (without being subjective,
I think) is Disco Volante. It just never ends. The songs are extremely
original, the production is amazing, and the influences/musics are so varied
that the listener can appreciate the results with a wider range of
possibilities. I finally grew up tired of "California" (OK, I listened to it
1000 times), which never happened with Disco. However, I would remove some
portions of the metal stuff, but an impressive album all in all.

I don't think that the Dan the Automator project is what was being named
Peeping Tom - Patton's 'collaboration' with him is more him than Patton, and
it also features Jennifer Charles on vocals. I believe it is out already
also... Peeping Tom is Patton's own project which is kind of poppy with a
weird slant.

Apologies for any cross postings, but I would like to pass on this
information for the lucky folks in the US. Creative saxophonist John Butcher
is to tour the US from the end of this month. Sorry I do not know the

CADENCE (USA)
"London and Cologne is dynamic music that probably had the audience at these
concerts sitting on the edge of their seats."
CADENCE (USA)
