  109. I just waded through over 1700 bounced messages
  110. for the zorn-list...there were a few that I'll
  111. be forwarding to y'all in the next couple of
  112. minutes (in case you are wondering why all these
  113. old messages are just appearing now).
  114.  
  115. Most of these bounces were for the following
  116. reasons
  117.  
  118. 1. the message came from an address not subscribed
  119.    to the zorn-list or zorn-list-digest
  120.  
  121. 2. the message was too frickin' large...usually
  122.    because someone included a copy of the entire
  123.    digest (forgot to trim), decided that attaching
  124.    a JPEG would be cool (FYI: it's not), or
  125.    included both plain text and HTML versions of
  126.    their message....or just said too much. ;)
  127.  
  128. 3. someone used one of several key words that the
  129.    mailing list software uses to catch subscription/
  130.    unsubscription messages. Some of these keywords
  131.    y'all should avoid using (if timely deliver of
  132.    your message is important) are:
  133.     subscribe
  134.     unsubscribe
  135.     cancel
  136.     help
  137.

  194. Gjerstad were supposed to be at the Zeitgeist creative music festival here 
  195. in New Orleans last week, but one of the venue directors said they had to 
  196. cancel "Because their wives wouldn't let them fly" to the United States.

  198. However, Konk Pack made it last night.  Very high level of interaction 
  199. between Hodgkinson, Turner and Lehn and they were so imaginative 
  200. individually, it was hard to decide which one to watch at any given moment.  
  201. Lots of little surprises that made me smile, and one time Turner whacked his 
  202. tom w/ such sudden and exaggerated force that I actually jumped. I had been 
  203. looking right at him but he still snuck up on me.  They all seemed to be 
  204. having monstrous fun, but Lehn particularly seemed to be just absolutely 
  205. smitten with all his knobs and dials.  I thought he might swoon at a couple 
  206. points when they were all playing really loud and intense.

  553.          ....speaking of Sam Rivers, I was given a copy of the Rivbea
  554. All-Star Orchestra "Inspiration" CD from '99, and it's not bad at all. It
  555. features plenty of names--Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, Hamiet Bluiett, Joseph
  556. Daley, Chico Freeman, etc.--and the music is highly spirited, at times quite
  557. intense examinations of the big band approach. It's not my favorite River's
  558. release --that would be the "Trio Live" CD reish on Impulse-- but the
  559. overall quality is rather impressive for a guy who was well nearing the end
  560. of his 4th decade of playing/recording when "Inspiration' was released. Most
  561. people burn out well before that. What are other list members favorite
  562. River's discs? I'd want more from the guy and would like some advice on
  563. where to go next. I have him on "Miles in Tokyo", the Impulse "Hues" LP, the
  564. "Trio Live" CD, his track on the "Wildflowers" set, and the above All-Star
  565. Orch. disc. He did some stuff for Blue Note, correct? How was that?

  633. Hey, I'm in Europe, so I have no idea if I am remotely up to date with this,
  634. but last year (2000) his trio consisted of Doug Matthews on bass, and
  635. Anthony Cole on drums.

  637. According to Coda Magazine 289 (by Greg Buium, jan/ feb 2000) Matthews
  638. played acoustic and electric bass plus bassclarinet, Rivers also played
  639. piano and flute, while Cole played drums and tenor saxophone.

  641. In the article the writer observed an enduring consistency in Rivers
  642. favoring versatile, open-minded musicians in his groups: Dave Holland (bass,
  643. electric bass, cello) , Joe Daley (tuba, trombone) and Thurman Barker (drums
  644. and vibes).

  669. Wall's Hasidic New Wave Alioune Faye & Yakar Rhythms.

  671. It is a way cool collection of judaica blended with senegalese rhythms. It
  672. is an odd collecton that maybe teaches us how today's jazz music could have
  673. sounded like if the jewish and the african musicians had met in New
  674. Amsterdam in 1600 already...

  677. in Africa.

  707. the Andrew Hill stuff, which contains one more session with Sam.

  709. Then you've got CONFERENCE OF TE BIRDS, isn't tat one of the greatest
  710. recordings of aaaallllll tiiiiime (say it like Ali) w/ Braxton, Holland, and

  714. is a mover.
