Apparently Buckethead was not part of Mike Patton's Moonraker, though I
remember someone posting about a Moonraker gig either this year or last,
where Buckethead played with them, holding a double-necked [touch] guitar,
one being bass, and one being guitar. If I recall correctly, Patton kept
calling Big B "bitch."

Subject: Mistaken indentity [was RE: ICP Orchestra]
We once had a similar situation at the NYC Knit. We put on a performance by
the Michael Gordon Philharmonic, a new-music quartet made up of Bang on a
Can composer Michael Gordon, soprano Dora Ohrenstein and a couple of other
like minds. But somehow, word got out that it was actually a secret gig by
Mike Gordon, bassist for Phish. Adding fuel to the fire, Phish happened to
be taping an appearance on Letterman that same afternoon.
Our phones rang off the hook for a day and a half leading up to the show,
with young stoners asking if it was true that Mike Gordon was playing on the
evening in question. We responded truthfully, insisting that it wasn't the
same guy, but every time we did, said stoners would reply, "Oh, you just
*have* to say that since it's a secret show, right?" and went right ahead
with their purchase.
The show, needless to say, sold out in advance. I daresay it's the only
scenario in which I can imagine the Michael Gordon Philharmonic playing its
particular brand of turbo-charged post-minimalism to a crowd of 300
patchouli-scented, hemp wearing Phishheads at the Knit. Miraculously, while
a few people had tried to cancel their advance ticket orders (apparently the
Phish bassist eventually got a message to the mailing list indicating that
he wouldn't in fact be playing that night), we did not have a stampede at
the ticket booth and it even looked as if some of the kids were enjoying
it - a little.
(Now, the nights that Pat Metheny played with Derek Bailey, Gregg Bendian
and Paul Wertico - THOSE nights we definitely had some pissed off yuppies
looking to get their gold cards credited...)

That was the second problem. The first (the one that resulted in refunds, I
might add) -- and I think you'll agree -- is a much funnier story to tell.

Fantomas!!! Either album , the first (Amenaza al Mundo) or The Director's
Cut, also some great live tracks floating around. Mike Patton with Dave
Lombardo (Slayer), Buzz Osborne (Melvins) Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle) doing a
distinctly Zorn influenced post-sludge rock trip, very short 'songs',
intense dense miniatures...

work with Andrew Hill. I have Hill's "Grass Roots" CD reish, and enjoy it
very much. It's very accessible sounding stuff. I've read/heard that Hill
released more outside material, and I'm guessing that the work w/ Rivers
fits this description. But I'm rather lost as to Hill's other recordings and
what kind of stylistic trajectory his music took from the '60's onward.
Besides the stuff w/ Rivers (which sounds awfully enticing), what is
worthwhile?

Sam Rivers will appear in Atlanta on Saturiday, 23 February 2002,
followed six days later by Evan Parker in a trio format. More details
on request (and boy, am I looking forward to both concerts). ICP
Orchestra's concert last Friday was truly fine. It was archived, if
anyone's interested.

was expecting a bit more considering all praise that is heaped on it. Am I

I heard there's a new Wayne Horvitz 4+1 cd out, which reminds me of
trombonist Julian Priester being in the band, along with electronic wiz
Tucker Martine. Interestingly, those two made a record with Sam Rivers in
1997.
I just returned to these 1997 electronic improvisations, 'Hints on light and
shadow' on Postcard Records. It's way cool, and since Postcards is back in
business through Arcadia Jazz, it shouldn't be hard to get a copy.

Hi,
Both of FantomΓs albums are worth the money, specially
their first release, "Amenaza al Mundo". As someone
said, it has something from Naked City. Their music
works as fast-changing small cells.
Mr. Bungle: buy them all! but specially "Disco
Volante", maybe more Zorn-list-related stuff there.
Best,

Subject: Re: where to go in london?
Excuse delay & lengthy response to this.
>>I'll be spending at least a few weeks in London in
the early part of next year.
> 1. where do I go to watch good live music?
(including but definitely not limited to jazz and
zornlist-ish stuff)
Well, London is so huge and has so many different
music venues that it's difficult to answer this
question without knowing something more specific about
your music tastes. Whenever John Zorn comes to London
he plays at the Barbican, a huge, ugly and
labyrinthine music/theatre/cinema/opera complex in the
financial district of London. It's worth keeping an
eye on their schedules, as well as those of the South
Bank venues: Purcell Room, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and
the Royal Festival Hall. As for smaller venues, well,
London unfortunately has no equivalent to the Knitting
Factory or even Tonic. Some of the better small London
venues are:
- -Vortex: a jazz cafe in Stoke Newington (north east
London), has gigs most nights. Evan Parker plays there
most months
- -Red Rose: large-ish backroom of a pub in Finsbury
Park (north London) that has lots of good improv on a
monthly basis
- -Spitz: nice cafe/bar in east London
- -Arts Cafe: ditto
There're dozens and dozens of venues scattered across
the city, any one of which could put on something of
interest to you on any given night. Best thing for you
to do is pick up a copy of 'Time Out' when you get
here and check the listings. Early January's not the
best time of the year to experience the London music
scene as the weather is so shit that most people are
in hibernation, but you should be able to see
something good while you're here.
>2. what's the local equivalent of nyc's Other Music?
Never having been to Other Music I couldn't say, but
probably the closest equivalent would be Rough Trade
in Covent Garden - good if slightly thin selection of
electronica through free improv, etc. I would,
however, guess that it is rather smaller in size and
scope than Other Music. They also have a branch off
Portobello Road in (Notting Hill, west London) that's
specialises more in indie. Also good for indie-type
stuff is Selectadisc (on Berwick Street in Soho). For
more jazz/improv/Zorn list material, there's Ray's
Jazz Shop (on Monmouth St in Covent Garden), and Mole
Jazz (can't remember which street, though it's near
Kings Cross railway station). Shopping there can be
quite a depressing experience - dingy atmosphere,
expensive prices, and staff are incredibly bitter and
surly. The 2ndhand section is good, though. Tower
Records on Piccadilly Circus has a large and fairly
comprehensive jazz section but is, as you would
expect, expensive.
My knowledge of London record stores isn't
encyclopaedic - records/CDs are so expensive here that
with the strength of the pound it's usually more
economical to mailorder them from the States - so
other London-based subscribers to this list might want
to chime in with alternate opinions. My favourite
London record stores are Sound 323 and These Records.
Both are a bit out of town but well worth the trip -
both have a small-ish, well-chosen range of stock at
the cheapest prices you'll find in London. Sound 323
is located in Highgate in north London, and These is
in Lambeth, in south London. NB: These is situated in
the middle of a suburban street, with no signage
whatsoever. They've completely painted over their
front window with whitewash, and the only indication
that These Records is based there is a tiny sticker
next to the doorbell. You ring the doorbell, and
someone lets you in. That's the way they like to do it
there.
You should note that London is not a good place to
look for rare and collectable LPs. The collectors'
market here is well sewn-up and rather overpriced
relative to that of the States. To give you some idea,
there's a record store on Portobello Road called
Intoxica that specialises in collector-type records.
They have a jazz department in the basement with lots
of rare LPs. I visited there a couple of years ago,
and they had an original vinyl copy of Sun Ra's
'Lanquidity' LP in good condition, which was selling
for a mere ú625.
>3. what's the local equivalent of nyc's Village Voice
(and where can I find it)? websites?
To its detriment, London has no equivalent to the
Village Voice. As mentioned above, the closest would
be 'Time Out' (cover price ú2.20), which comes out
weekly and has very comprehensive listings, for art,
film, music, clubs, comedy, etc. It's on sale in all
newsagents. For music listings also see the LMC
website (http://www.l-m-c.org.uk), whose monthly
calendar conveniently summarises all avant-related
activity, and the gig listings in 'The Wire'.
>4. other non-tourist points of interest?
Once again, it depends on where your interests lie.
London has so much on offer in the way of sightseeing
and historical sites that you could fill a month
trying to take it all in. However, the one thing you
really should not leave town without seeing is the new
Tate Modern art gallery on Bankside (ie. south side of
the Thames) - it's well worth the visit.
I would recommend picking up the Time Out London
guide, a paperback book which retails for I think
ú10.99, and which gives a very good overview of the
city and all its attractions. It's also written by
people who live here and actually care about the city,
as opposed to the other guides (Let's Go, Rough Guide,
Lonely Planet), which are written by whinging
jobsworth backpackers only interested in the cheapest
possible accommodation and food. In my opinion.
Anyway - enjoy your time here...
