Hi all,
I just picked up John Oswald's Plunderphonics 69/96 last night (complete
with a "plundered" Naked City track) and was just kind of wondering how this
release got put out considering the asinine copyright/intellectual property
laws. Does anyone have any insight into this?

I think the deal was that Oswald was going to put it out somewhat
legitimately with the samples cleared and royalties for the sample-ees, and
it was going to be about $100 for two CD's. Then Negativland stepped in and
"stole" the masters and original digital copies of the artwork and put it
out "without Oswald's consent." There's some funny e-mail where he says "I
am happy to do nothing to stop them." If people are interested, I can look
for it and forward.

Yes.
I'm wondering, did anybody here go to that Massacre concert in London? Was

I know this question has gone round the list before, but I've been growing
frustrated with some of the usual sources for mail order CDs (especially
Bent Crayon!), and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for some
other good online retailers along the lines of Forced Exposure. Especially
if there is any place that deals specifically in the music that gets
discussed here...

The synth has always been the hallmark of New Wave....so....the definition
of "new wave" would be
"early post-punk + synthesizers."
New Wave was essentially a "toned down" punk in the sense that it was early
post-punk; poppier, less angry, less political.
Or, check out the textbook definition at

Very good question.
I've always wondered about that too. I guess the "synth" explanation is
right, I mean, DEVO was New Wave, but THE SMITHS weren't, right?

Depends on where you were and when. The Police played at my (Alabama)
college in 1980 and since they were considered a New Wave band there were
only a few dozen people there. U2 also had trouble getting airplay in the
US initially because they were considered New Wave. The B-52s, Elvis C.,
Rockpile and tons of what would now be called power pop were all New Wave.
But in London or NYC the view would have been different, most of these
bands got re-labelled and is "New Wave" still used by anybody? I'm not
sure it was "watered-down" punk anyway but rather people using elements of
punk for their own ends (or maybe not anything punk at all but they just
happened to get caught up in the labelling sweep). Punk watered itself
down pretty well anyway: The Damned, Stranglers, Siouxsie, pop moves by
Buzzcocks & Clash, etc.

I guess the New Wave thing began right out of those after-punk bands but
they sort of intended to take a darker mood (The Cure seems a good example
to me). Most of them just ended up being ridiculous caricatures of more
serious bands like Bauhaus or Siouxeee & The Banshees (I don't like none of
them at all, BTW).
For me, The Smiths were just a pop band, some times more inspired than
others, but generally good. I think their inspirations were drawn from
sources that didn't have much in common with their contemporaries. I've
never seen the "punk" essence in The SMiths' Music.
BTW, I'm also looking forward to Mulholland Drive. It was premiered in the
Sitges Festival (Catalonia, Spain) last week and surprisingly it received
much appraisal by the critics, which is pretty unusual in Lynch's career. A
friend saw the film and says it's just amazing. Badalamenti's work has also
been applauded- it's no strange.
Best,

Actually not. Unfortunately, a few years ago the British press started
talking about New Wave of New Wave, which was actually a bunch of pop bands
largerly inspired by the Beatles and that didn't really bring anything NEW
to the musical mainstream market - or any other markets, in fact.

While that may have become true of the 80's new wave, I remember that it
originally
was the term to describe groups like Talking Heads, Blondie, Television,
Nick Lowe,
Elvis Costello, etc that were part of the same scene as the punks (i.e.
both Talking Heads
and The Ramones playing CBGBs) but, obviously, didn't really fit the punk
description. All
in all, the punk/new wave scene in NY and London around '77 was originally
a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) rebellion but once some of these groups started
having success, pretty much anybody with short hair was called 'new
wave'. Which, come to think of it, is not unlike what happened to
'Alternative' and 'Grunge' after Nirvana. James

foaks,
Through no fault of mine (I assure you), I seem to have come about doubles
of three of the new releases on Zarek, an excellent young German label. They
are:
Perlonex- Peripherique (Ignaz Schick, Jorg Maria Zeger, Burkhard Beins)
Keith Rowe/Burkhard Beins- Grain
Ignaz Schick/Andrea Neumann- Petit Pale
I'll sell them for $11ppd ($12 overseas) each, but I'm also open to trades.

I beg to differ about New Wave being a corporation invention in reaction to
Punk=2E (Was'nt it Punk in fact which was fabricated by this English publici=

The source of what became known as New Wave can be traced to Warhol's

Glam Rock (T-Rex, NY Dolls, Roxy Music, etc=2E) in the early-mid 70's=2E
New Wave had a dead-pan ironic, intentionally caricatural twist on

New Wave groups were a reaction to what by 1975 had become as institutional

(Led Zeppelin, Allman Brothers, etc=2E)=2E I remember well how refreshing an=

Aside from obvious bands like the B-52's, the Cars, Talking Heads, Soft

Police, or the Stray Cats could be considered New Wave=2E
I remember hearing really creative bands in clubs which never recorded or
hit the big time but deserved to, such as the Maps (anyone remember them?),
a kind of autistic Jefferson Airplane, or Human Sexual Response, who had a
