I have this album, and I like it quite a bit. It is a recording of a
pure improv show with Eyvind and Michael, playing just violin and
Double Bass. It is not super out in a 'Sweetness of Sickness' way,
but it has none of the compositional structure of say 'Story of
Iceland' either. No structure, and it varies quite a bit in
tonalities and volume. You really get to hear Eyvind play, and
Michael too, whom I think is fantastic. That's really about all I can
say about it without listening to it again. I seem to recall I had
some difficulty getting it, but I do reccomend it.

Maybe my poor English makes me miss something but WHERE'S THE OFFENCE in
"mulatto"?. I am Spanish, dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes. Should I feel
offended by someone calling me "Latino" then?
=20
Sorry, but I hate euphemisms. In my country, what was formerly known as
GENOCIDE (genocidio) is called now ETHNIC CLEANING (limpieza =E9tnica). Thi=

I saw this band tonight at the Knitting Factory Hollywood and they were
absolutely killer. As much as I am impressed with the album, they were much
better live. They have much more of a electric Miles groove going than on
album (in large part due to the double-keyboards). Craig Taborn was
fantastic on the Fender Rhodes, with Jamie Saft less so on electric piano,
although he also had his moments. I dug Brad Jones' sound on electric
stand-up bass (don't think i've ever seen it before) and Mori's ambient
effects were pretty unique--much more prominent live than on album. Douglas
sounded, as always, brilliant (although I'm much more impressed with him
live). The only disappointment was Chris Speed, who seemed to be off doing
his own thing a bit too much. This was only the band's fourth show together,
but they sounded great together. I too am very glad Douglas enjoys playing
out west--this was his 3rd time playing the Knit Hollywood in the past year
(the others being his quartet and Charms of the Night Sky), and we are lucky
for it.

Sorry, but you mistook me for someone else!
Never did I say such a thing.
I only ever expressed my wish that hopefully one day Zorn will release something
on CD featuring the Masada line-up with Marc Ribot!

Hi,
I've wondering what the Lizards have been doing
lately.
Their last album I know of is "Queen of all Ears",
which, as far as I know, was recorded around 1993
although published much later. It means almost a
10-year studio inactivity. Have they been playing gigs
in the US?. I thought they might have disbanded.
Besides that, I think Lurie's last work was the
soundtrack for "Animal Factory". I didn't enjoy it
that much. Any word on Lurie's upcoming releases?
Thanks.

It's mostly modal free jazz kinds of things, some more energetic and
out than others. It's good but it doesn't have the kind of stylistic
variety of most of the ensemble releases under Kang's own name.
In a similar but prettier and more restrained vein, folks may be
interested in a CD Eyvind recorded with Amir Koushkani, an Iranian
tar player living in Vancouver. The disc is called In the Path of
Love and contains four lengthy pieces in Iranian and Indian styles. I
picked it up at Wall of Sound in Seattle when I was there in August.
There's no address or other contact information on the disc, but
perhaps Tony Reif, who produced an earlier disc by Koushkani, may
know how to get it.
And Kang completists will be interested in a compilation I'd
forgotten all about produced by the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle
called a Bridge Home. This was part of the documentation for an
exhibition focusing on music in the lives of Pacific Asian Americans
and there's a roughly five minute track by Eyvind on it, a medley
called Summons/Lisa. Summons is a tune, Lisa is a multi-tracked noise
fest.
Bests,
Herb

Hi,
there┤s an interview with Misha Mengelberg done by John Corbett some years
ago. MM is speaking about attending Ellington in 1947 or 48, hating Free
Jazz and learning from his cat - a little bit dated but still interesting.
One quote about Monk:
'We were sitting somewhere and I asked him some question, and he put that
same question to my wife. My wife says something like: "Huh, why do you ask
that to me?" And he bent over to me and said what my wife said. That was
obviously one of his games, funny conversation. Went on for 20 minutes.'
The interview can be found at www.hathut.com/mengelberg.html
