someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but they're still planning to open the
stock market on Monday, which is much closer to ground zero than the Knit is.
unless their building has structural damage, I'd guess they'd be able to open
in the next few days.
FWIW, I talked to Bruce Gallanter this afternoon. DMG is open and on a normal
schedule, although most of their incoming shipments this week have been
delayed. he plans to send out his weekly newsletter of new releases later
today.

dear arthur,
thanks for putting this on the list.
local (nyc) stories coming from my black students of white adults
blocking them from buying stuff in local stored with arab staff or owners..
we had to personally drive our muslim students home tuesday,
the day of the attack. i recently saw a documentary on the wonderful
egyptian singer oh kalsoum, which led me to believe that she was more than
just a patriot for her people, which sort of scares me. but ditto the very
conservative and equally amazing celia cruz.

this was a rather difficult decision. we were all very
stunned and discombobulated by what had happened (and
by what will still happen). but *not* playing didn't
seem like it would solve much of anything. we thought
it was important to continue. and if the the global
situation doesn't go too haywire, we'll finish up the
tour over the next couple weeks.
still, playing the concert on tuesday did feel a bit
strange and i certainly felt a bit disconnected, but
i'm glad we did it nonetheless.
take care,
.greg.

there was a recording made by the college on CD which the performers will

I saw three or four new Lee Perry reissues in the bins today; can't
remember the titles but I think they were distributed by BMG (!). Any
opinions or info about these? And what about the "Lost Treasures" box?
Perry has a daunting discography and of the dozen or so albums I've heard
some has been wonderful and some dull as well.

Subject: cathartic music in light of the tragedy of 9/11
I've thought about how to make some for days and have come to the following
conclusions:
1. You can't write a chord ugly enough nor a rhythm jarring enough to
describe the event itself.
2. There is no musical phrase so tender as to be able to say anything of
lasting comfort to those who lost love ones.
3. The people who particpated in the attack apparently have no conscience,
so attempting to provoke thought about what this damage means to humanity
would be futile.
4. Trying to create anything beautiful or even meaningful in the wake of the
event would be like trying to make beef stew out of rotten meat. No matter
how you cook it, it's just poison. And, like rotten meat, it just leaves
its disease all over anything it touches.

I've been listening to a lot of Curtis Mayfield myself lately. anyone out
there an expert on his post-Impressions solo catalog? is there a serious
falloff after Curtis, Roots, Curtis Live, and Superfly? I've been hesitant to
explore later material.
also, as long as we're in this general area, are there any other Isaac Hayes
records on the same level as Hot Buttered Soul?
in the last few days, I've mostly been listening to a lot of solo guitar:
Sugimoto, Mazzacane, Fahey, Akiyama, as well as AMM, Morton Feldman, and dach.

From: "Bill Ashline" <bashline@hotmail.com>
Subject: NYC Zornlisters & Kim Duk-soo's "Spirit of Nature" Project
I wanted to send my condolences to the NYC and DC Zornlisters as well. A
terrible atrocity and a completely self-defeating one for the surviving
actors. Here in Seoul, Korea yesterday, the sirens normally reserved for
monthly training against possible North Korean attack, were used to
commemorate the victims in the states. My hope, and it's not a confident
one, is that America's leaders act wisely rather simply aggressively--that
they ponder carefully the terrorism and its motivations. No doubt, the
terrorists did as well, and US aggression toward the Arab world may be
exactly what they want.
Oversaturated with media coverage, with mourning, sadness, and fear, I went
to see Kim Duk-soo's project over here in Seoul. He and his Samulnori
troupe are planning to "globalize" traditional Korean culture by opening
cultural centres in New York, Paris, Los Angeles, and Berlin in the next
several years. The project, called "Nanjang Cultures," refers to a Korean
expression which means a "scene of tumult." How ironic, in light of this
weeks events. Last evening's performance was inspired to say the least and
included the music and themes of traditional Korean shamanistic rituals as
well as pansori, pan-nori (dance and music), and a nine-piece ensemble that
included kayagam performers, kojok, changgu, ching, piri, and kwaenggari
players. The first set culminated with absolutely brilliantly precise
rendition of "Samdo Nongak Karak," a well-known number in the Samulnori
repertoir, that was completely trance-inducing. I suspect this group will
travel at some point. If you have a chance, drop everything and go. More
info soon in English at http://www.nanjangcultures.com
I include the signature quotes below. Though long, they are rather
pertinent in these "unusual" times. I've been assembling a number of
articles from the alternative presses in the last week that are articulating
something other than the received views of CNN. If interested, drop me an
email and I'll forward them along.
Regards,
Bill Ashline

"The disaster ruins everything, all the while leaving everything intact. It
does not touch anyone in particular; "I" am not threatened by it, but
spared, left aside. It is in this way that I am threatened; it is in this
way that the disaster threatens in me that which is exterior to me--an other
than I who passively become other. There is no reaching the disaster. Out
of reach is he whom it threatens, whether from afar or close up, it is
impossible to say: the infiniteness of the threat has in some way broken
every limit. We are on the edge of disaster without being able to situate
it in the future: it is rather always already past, and yet we are on the
edge or under the threat, all formulations which would imply the
future--that which is yet to come--if the disaster were not that which does
not come, that which has put a stop to every arrival. To think the
disaster(if this is possible, and it is not possible inasmuch as we suspect
that the disaster is thought) is to have no longer any future in which to
think it.--Maurice Blanchot, "The Writing of the Disaster"
"The safe Sphere in which Americans live is experienced as under threat from
the Outside of terrorist attackers who are ruthlessly
self-sacrificing AND cowards, cunningly intelligent AND primitive
barbarians. Whenever we encounter such a purely evil Outside, we should
gather the courage to endorse the Hegelian lesson: in this pure Outside, we
should recognize the distilled version of our own essence. For the last five
centuries, the (relative) prosperity and peace of the "civilized" West was
bought by the export of ruthless violence and destruction into the
"barbarian" Outside: the long story from the conquest of America to the
slaughter in Congo. Cruel and indifferent as it may sound, we should also,
now more than ever, bear in mind that the actual effect of these bombings is
much more symbolic than real. The US just got the taste of what goes on
around the world on a daily basis, from Sarajevo to Grozny, from Rwanda and
Congo to Sierra Leone."--Slavoj Zizek
