dear marcin,
not at all a stupid question; a very loving one.
i believe the emotional support that you and
all my musician friends and colleagues worldwide have sent
have kept me going. just the fact that you asked is a major help.
ive sent many a long letter, too long and personal for this list,
but the short version: i'm ok physically but not emotionally.
i have friends missing.
personally, i worked hard with my highschool students and our crisis center;
many students had parents working in the towers and we could see the sky
filled with black smoke all day; many had heard the sound of the planes
hitting
the w,t.c. my brother works quite close and my 5yr old niece saw the tv and
kept screaming 'daddy is dead!' but he is mostly fine.
boston violinist jonathan lamaster (of sublingual records) sends word
from thurston moore that "Jim O'Rourke was sleeping in our studio,
3 blocks from the Twin Towers, and ran through a flurry of of dust
in pitch blackness also to our apartment
(I imagine our studio is pretty much wasted)."
me, i never felt fear, but i do feel anger, and disgust, and
resentment that ive already heard people who shd know better with
dangerous racist/nationalist stuff. we decided to escort our arabic
students directly home rather than have them take the public
busses.

Indeed, for many of us that might be the only thing we CAN
do. Just started school this week here at California
Institute of the Arts, and yesterday was a very dark day on
campus. Of course many people here have connections with
people in NYC, many professors cancelled class; about the
only thing we (students) have been able to do (when not
watching the news footage) is play. Did a noon concert/jam
session today in the middle of campus for folks walking by,
and just by people's reactions it's obvious that during
times like this the importance of the arts is realized
(needed) so deeply by people. When it's too hard to go on
with the day as usual and too emotionally unbearable to
continually focus on the tragedy, the arts experience seems
to uplift people to a feeling of unity and shared humanity,
a celebration of life in the face of such a profound loss
of life.
I hope that doesn't sound cold; I believe that thoughts of
both art and death cause us to direct our attention to the
value and beauty of life, which is, the most important
thing that we ALL share.
My deepest sympathies to the NYC'ers on this list...don't
know you personally, but I read your comments often and the
posts of yesterday and today have been very moving. We are
all thinking of you.
peace,

I've been very edgy. From my office window, I saw the second plane hit the
WTC, then I saw the collapses. Those are images that will be etched on my
mind for the rest of my life. I just hope that all of our lives can get back
to some semblance of normalcy soon, i.e., regular TV and radio programs,
concerts, shows, sports events, and doing the things we normally do day in
and day out. It seems that everything has come to a screeching halt for now.
It's scary!

Just wanna chime in here real quickly and say how glad I am the NYC zornlisters
are doing ok. I was out much of this afternoon hauling supplies to the triage
centers at Chelsea Piers, where the Red Cross is asking people to bring their
donations. If you're in the area, and have the time, you should definitely join
in. Personally, I lost my cousin Joe to the incident. He worked for Dell and
his office was in the WTC.
Again, glad to hear Jon, Brian (really good timing), etc are all alive.

Subject: Arab-Americans fear backlash
Hello All!
I'm absolutely terrified by the reports of Arabs and muslims being attacked
in America. Being a muslim does not in any way make them responsible!! Even
the most anti-American muslim countries have spoken agains the terror
explosions, and we'd better well keep up the positve contact. It's not
difficult to imagine how they might react to hearing about this.
Right now, as far as I can tell, we are facing a couple of 1000s fanatic
terrorists, but should we start to treat all Muslims as enemies, they will
surely start acting like it, which could turn more than one billion people
world wide into "the enemy". Not a smart thing!
Please do whatever you can to spread the info that we cannot let this
happen!!

The former Afghanistan embassador in Germany said the we must in no way
treat ther Afghanistan people as the enemy. They are themselves the first
victims of the fundamentalist islamic Taleban Government.
Think about it!

Hey all,
I just picked up another half dozen of the Calibre/ESP-DISK's and my
copy of Milford Graves' Percussion Ensemble turned out to be one of the
Psych-Rock discs they issued, the GODZ maybe. Has anyone else had this
problem?? Just curious becuase I have a replacement on the way and am
hoping it doesn't have the same problem.
The others I grabbed were Pharoah Sanders, Paul Bley Trio, Guiseppi
Logan-More, Albert Ayler-Bells & Spritual Unity. So far all are
fantastic and I would highly reccomend any of them to any one
interested.
On a side note, I attended pretty well everything at the Guelph Jazz
Festival this year. Whoa, what a festival anyone else in attendance
this year? Some of the highlights were a set by Glenn Hall/Ray
Anderson/Lee Renaldo/Gerry Hemingway as well as sets by Hemingway/Hamid
Drake, Lou Grassi/Marshall Allen, Joe McPhee's Bluette and a workshop
led by John Heward including members of Bluette. Already I am itching
to see next years line-up. Perhaps I'll make the trek to Victoriaville
nest May.
I am looking forward to seeing Georg Graewe again this weekend in
Toronto. His quartet with Frank Gratkowksi, Kent Kessler and Hamid
Drake will be returning to Canada for an afternoon show on this coming
Sunday. If you can make it out there it should be pretty good, they
played a great set last weekend in Guelph. I talked with Georg briefly
and he gave me the ok to record it so I am expecting more of the same
this weekend.

Dwayne

I don't know of any such "gigography," but Bruce Gallanter at Downtown Music
Gallery would certainly know. He's at 99% of Zorn's local gigs. You
probably shouldn't expect a quick answer, however, as his store is in the
area of New York that's still closed down.

As a side note that may not be wholly relevant, here in Minnesota there is
going to be a performance that will not last years, but will at least span
25 hours of continuous playing. In Duluth on 9/21/2001 (I believe at 9PM)
at the NorShor Theatre there will begin a concert called a "collective
improvisational drone" called Elegy 25. It is dedicated to Michael Lenz,
who was murdered in Boston in March of 2001. Local bands as well as
musicians from around the country will be joining in to create a eulogy of
sorts to him. Anyone who wants to participate may join in, and anyone who
wants to witness it may do so. The ticket price is $5 for the whole 25
hour production. From what I've heard, many local MN bands including
Duluth's Low will be there as well as Detroit area's Windy & Carl, and
Aarktica and many more to come.
I am in no way connected to the concert, but I thought I would pass it
along. I think in light of the recent happenings in NY, the whole affair
will take on even more emotion than was originally intended.
For those that cannot attend, they will be doing a Web Simulcast of the
entire 25 hour show. Check www.elegy25.com for more details.
Just thought I'd pass this along in case anyone is interested. I for one
am trying to figure out how I can either take part, or at the very least
experience some part of it.
My thoughts go out to those of you in NY and those of you who have been
affected in any way by these recent tragedies. I am still in a state of
shock and denial. It's hard to imagine the sort of mind that could
consider this an act of "retribution". To me, all it represents is an
incredibly immature and twisted view of the world. There is no
justification for what happened, no matter what your personal political or
religious view may be.
Despite my relative isolation here in the great midwest, I offer any help I
can to anyone affected by these events. This is something no one should
ever have to face.

For the first time in the 50 years of her life, the dream came true - my
mother got a chance to visit her countless friends and relatives in the

Memphis to New York. She can't speak English, she hasn't slept for three
nights and as far as I know she's sitting in the New Arc Airport waiting for
the flight to California.
My family here is terrified, especially my Jewish grandmother, who just
can't believe it's happening - among others to her own daughter and our
relatives, who were considered to live in the most secure place on the face
of Earth. It's so distant but so incredibly close.
If there's any chance to help from here in Berlin the list-members down

I thought it was very good. They traveled through many different textures
often transitioning rather quickly but not awkwardly. They added an element
to their music which I personally have not heard before and liked very much
- - Silence (of course relative). It was clear - to me at least - that the
silence was simply a space at the end of a thought/section and not an
ending. They would often depart rather radically from the previous texture
once they did break the silence. Many of these silences were very abrupt.
I was rather consumed by the music, especially for the second half of the
performance. It's nice to have these kind of concerts in the area from time
to time. It's rather different than a recording.
