  50. Sad to say, it's kind of hard to get a hold of their music outside of Turkey.  The Ecstatic Peace! release is really the only thing available in the States and elsewhere at the moment.  EP actually offered to release more of their material here but the band has been slow to get back
  51. to them.  If you do run across anything else by them, snap it and you'll be happy- they have about three or four other releases out.  You might try to contact one of the labels that they've dealt with in Istanbul to see if they have anything else still in print available:

  301. I've historically gone with cdconnection.com for almost all of my large
  302. mainstream-music orders (stuff that these big stores have, 20+ cd orders),
  303. because their prices were competitive and shipping free.  But for some
  304. reason many of the prices there for records on my current list are quite
  305. high, so cdc is out this round.  But what are the other cheap options -
  306. places like cdnow can really gitcha on shipping.  cheap-cds.com seems an
  307. option, but they limit their order sizes to 9 at a time, which annoyed me
  308. enough to make me write this request.

  310. Any other bulk-buying misers out there?  This is basically for major-label,
  311. mixed-genre stuff - interested in one-stop shops.

  503. This week I came across two very interesting albums which I think are
  504. interesting for those who are into extreme metal:
  505.  
  506. Krisiun - Ageless Venomous
  507. These guys from Brazil play very fast deathmetal, at moments heavily
  508. influenced by Morbid Angel. The clear and vey dry production make them an
  509. exception in the genre though. Nice guitarsolos and highly structured
  510. compostions and fast, fast, fast.
  511.  
  512. Mastodon - Lifesblood (ep)
  513. Out on Relapse soon (I think next week). This is the new band of ex-Today Is
  514. The Day drummer Bran Dailor so you know what to expect in the percussive
  515. department. Altough the music has a lot of TITD-elements, they sound a lot
  516. heavier with grunt like vocals and thrashy riffing. Jazzy at times, funny
  517. samples, but above all fenomenal musicianship. Maybe the most refreshing
  518. band on the label, next to Dillinger Escape Plan.

  546. Since no one else has mentioned it, I thought I'd pass along a 
  547. recommendation for the new Wayne Horvitz Four Plus One Ensemble album 
  548. 'From a Window'.  I was able to get an early copy from Wayne himself 
  549. at a recent Seattle 'Pigpen' show (which was also fantastic BTW) I 
  550. was able to talk to Wayne a bit about the album, and he said that it 
  551. was the most fun he has ever had in a recording session, that it 
  552. seemed like the whole thing was coffee breaks and fun times.  The 
  553. only negative he said was that it was being release on 'Avant' 
  554. limiting it's audience.
  555.  
  556. I find it hard to actually review music so I will just make a few 
  557. general statements.  First off there is a lot more of Tucker 
  558. Martine's processing on this album,  It is still very subtle and laid 
  559. back but he has really come into his own and working as player in his 
  560. own right. It is an interesting concept live processing, in that it 
  561. takes the concept of the "studio as instrument" and makes it into a 
  562. reality.  It can be done live. See track three, "Julian's Ballad" and 
  563. track four, "People Just Float" for some prime examples of the 
  564. Martine processing. There is some fantastic work by Julian Priester, 
  565. especially on the first track "Crispin and Lisa's Duet", but also in 
  566. various segments of "Leave Here Now".  Julian is often used in an 
  567. almost soundscaping fashion on most the other tracks, notably the 
  568. final track "Willy's Music". While there is no lyrical singing from 
  569. Reggie Watts, he does do some nice vocalizations on "Sweeter than the 
  570. Day". Skerik fans will find some really nice work from him on 
  571. baritone sax underscoring some really low trombone on "Leave Here 
  572. Now", which also features all the members well in an almost 
  573. traditional solo swapping style, but has a more interesting modern 
  574. flavor to it. This long song is absolutely fantastic, meandering 
  575. along with solos and duos and increasing in intensity for its 
  576. whole >10min length. Eyvind Kang shines on "People Just Float" and 
  577. "From a Window", they latter being the most classical flavored of the 
  578. album. Wayne of course plays wonderfully almost everywhere, going 
  579. from sound effects with the Nord to elegant piano, to jazzy rifts on 
  580. a host of instruments.  I love his compositions and this album really 
  581. highlights some of his best.
  582.  
  583. All in all the album has much the sound and feeling as the first Four 
  584. Plus One album. It is great headphone music as the the layers of 
  585. complexity are rich and subtle.

  635. I heard once, and maybe I misunderstood what I was hearing, that Zorn puts
  636. things out on Avant that he knows will sell well. Mike Rizzi, was I smoking
  637. too much Brotzmann that night, or did I hear that correctly?

  643. I first got a whiff of this notion from the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic
  644. Ensemble, and it's such a fertile concept. Live sound processing as an
  645. extension of the art of the improvisor -- what a gas! This really suggests
  646. guerilla tactics a la Zorn's game pieces, and I wondered if anybody had heard
  647. of any Cobra performances that involved live guerilla remixers/processors as
  648. well as instrumentalists.
