  45. only music that I've heard in my experience that comes
  46. close to what I'm hearing in those two pieces (I'm
  47. thinking parts of Chiastic Slide, Confield, and
  48. Minidisc in particular).  That's why I said that those
  49. pieces "remind me" of the work of those artists.

  51. that Zorn was trying to imitate.

  159. comparison. I really think that they thoroughly work their structures =
  160. and sounds to the smallest detail.
  161. I'd dare to say (as I stated here when I heard "Songs from...") that =
  162. this album doesn't go ANYWHERE as a whole. It seems gratuitous to me, =
  163. which is an adjective I had never applied to Zorn before. I could like a =
  164. record or dislike it but never regarded one of his albums as pretentious =
  165. shit. When someone does something in the "press-a-button" vein, I hate =
  166. him/her trying to sell the stuff to me by using an intellectual alibi.
  167. I would love to give an in-depth opinion on these compositions, but it's =
  168. been impossible since I find them extremely shallow.

  281. True.  Though from the sound of their last album,
  282. Confield, and their recent live shows, it seems as
  283. though they are trying to incorporate improvisation
  284. into their M.O.  I wonder if Zorn's two pieces make
  285. use of improvisation somehow?  Perhaps that would
  286. account for that quality of "not quite getting there"?

  381. It might depend on your definition of challenging.  It its time, "Papa's Got
  382. A Brand New Bag" (by James brown) was an unprecedented sound.  But, since
  383. nobody bothered to present it to the audience as a potential problem, it got
  384. by okay.

  386. Charles Ives, on the other hand, was for so long described as difficult
  387. that, when people finally got to hear it, their reference point did nothing
  388. to bring them closer to the music (and in fact probably kept a great many
  389. people away).
  390.  
  391. Art, if it's the real stuff, will usually speak for itself.  It might take a
  392. good bit of time for the audience to rally around it, sure.  But the real
  393. stuff should be afforded the opportunity to do its own talking before
  394. someone sticks a reference point in front of it.

  420. yes, and they endorsed the Paratactile release quite strongly.  I assume 
  421. what you're saying is that there's very little consensus on what the "best" 
  422. Fushitsusha release is.  Am I right?  I haven't heard the Tokuma releases.  
  423. I do like the PSFs and the Paratactile, however.  But I agree with the 
  424. reviewer that F requires too much time.  One disk, every so often, is quite 
  425. enough.

  448. I'd think that it would be strange to like 100 percent of someone's
  449. output. The artist you listen to isn't not you; and I think he does
  450. not himself like some of the things he has done. If one wants to be a
  451. completist, no problem; but one must be ready to buy stuff he does not
  452. like and treat them as valuable hsitorical document.
  453.     I remeber having a discussion along the lines of 'is masada just
  454. boredom or is it a great band'. I was entousiaatically for, as I like
  455. th band very much. The person who disagreed argued that all thoose
  456. records very similiar, and he's bought them all, and now he regrets it
  457. etc.
  458.     Some time after this exchange I realised that he, who did not like
  459. the band, had them all, while me, who likes it very much, just have 4
  460. of them + 2 live albums...

  501.      I became a Zorn completist because, honestly, I like nearly everything enough to admit that I got my $$$ worth... Even if I really didn't like one song, usually another song on the album was made the purchase worth while... A trade-off of sorts... I suppose I was a bit T-ed off because I'm used to really finding interesting, redeeming things on all of Zorn's releases, yet this album seemed poorly thought out and trivial... The last track and track 2 are okay, but it c(w)ould've been quite appropiate to put those 2 songs on some other album... Track 3 is complete bullshit... Even Merzbow would puke after that one.  Ha ha ha  That's just my opinion, I could be wrong...

  569. I really like it. But then again I didn't mind the Medieval stuff on 'ToMN'.
  570. It was the reggae-ish stuff near the end I couldn't stand. Anyway, brief
  571. description of 'Iceland': the album starts off with a suite of 5 pieces
  572. which keep returning to the main theme (which is a very nice, multi-layered
  573. little theme). After that there's a song (with singing, that is) that kind
  574. of sounds a little bit like Bowie, but the concept is to repeat the main
  575. tune, building up, adding layers, etc... And finally there is a short
  576. gamelan piece. On the whole, a very enjoyable album...
