Ooh... Sounds quite tempting. I hope it ends up on CD eventually...

I saw them on their last tour, and it was very good.
Around the 101 shows they were doing lots of stuff from tapes/sequencers, I think. And
I can understand you got the impression you did get... (Besides, I think they were
totally burnt-out on that tour anyways; it lasted for ages...)
On the last tour it was more of a live thing; including a drummer. (Is he still with
them now?)
Well - rather off-topic now, I know...

Let's see, recent frequent plays...
Well they have been all my recent acquisitions, and things friends lent me
or recorded for me, such as: Fantomas' "Director's Cut" (really great;
cheesy -as someone said- but lots of fun), Otomo Yoshihide's "Flutter" (What
do you think of it? I like it), "Mingus Ah Uhm" by you-already-know-who,
P.I.L.'s "Metal Box" (the u.k. reissue), an early recording of Weil-Brecht's
"Mahagony" (amazing), Neil Young's "Tonight the Night", Television's
"Marquee Moon", and the reissue of Bob Marley's "Catch a Fire".
Well that sums up the last three months or so, and I see there's a lot of
"rock music" in it, so I feel like starting a thread...Which
new/contemporary rock bands you think are worth the attention, or you find
interesting? I personally have a thing for At the Drive In, but I don't see
anything else that is worth my pesos.

Lots of pop/Americana these days. My Jazz and Classical always hibernates in
the summer and emerges yawning and hungry in the fall. My current playlist:
Wilco -- Summerteeth
A whole buncha Jeff Tweedy and Ryan Adams boots
Lucinda Williams -- Essence
Robbie Fulks -- Country Love Songs
Bob Mould -- Last Dog and Pony Show
Rollins Band -- Yellow Blues
John Prine -- In Spite of Ourselves
Buddy Miller -- Cruel Moon
Nick Lowe -- The Impossible Bird
Alejandro Escovedo -- Bourbonitis Blues
and I'm salivating in anticipation of the new Elvis Costello Rhino reissues
that promise a bonus disc of unreleased demos, b-sides and outtakes with each
album.
I'm also eager to hear the new Dylan and Gillian Welch and Wilco and Ryan
Adams releases.
Okay, I've also been listening to Naked City and the new Dave Douglas and Roy
Campbell and William Parker's Little Huey Orchestra.
Poppin',

OOOOhhhh OOOOOOOOhhhhhh OOOOOOhhhhhh,
while maintaining a fresh approach to the staples such as Sonny Rollins and
Eric Dolphy, I've actually I've been drastically moved by a reissue of Ravi
Shankar at the Monterrey (sp?) Pop Festival in 1967. With him is Ustad Alla
Rakha who does an immense of job of making me think like through listening like
no other player. If you haven't heard this album, I would highly recommend it
for the simplicity of these pieces. There are only three tracks but there is
over an hour of music.
Since I'm living in Norman, Oklahoma, USA there's been a strong influx of
strong songwriting and structured music that blows me away. The Flaming Lips
and the Starlight Mints are regular touring acts who still live here. The
Flaming Lips actually just finished music for a documentary entitled "Okie
Noodling" by director Brad Beasley. Check it out, it got some serious
recognition in Austin at South by Southwest festival. So with this
environmental change, I've actually been exposed to some serious bluegrass and
good country that I never though would ever listen to... that has changed. But
I love me my Masada live in Middleheim. Just as a little side note, in 1993
when Masada decided to do a five-city tour of the US, they picked Norman as the
middle one. What the hell? I love it, I missed it because I wasn't living here
yet, but I think it was all a part of John Zorn's humor. If any of you New York
cats get to ask him something, ask why he stopped in Norman for that year. I
think he went from chicago to Norman to San Francisco. Please let me know his
answer...

It's great to see these records come up here! Having worked on these
discs and given that Blakeslee, Storrs, Halley et al are old friends,
my opinion is totally subjective, but I think they're doing some
wonderful stuff. Halley, IMO, has never sounded better than on
Coyotes.

No, the complete original League of Gentlemen album was not ever transfered
to CD. Seven tracks from that album were paired with the two tracks from
side B of Fripp's 'God Save the Queen/Under Hevay Manners' LP (and one of
those, "The Zero of the Signified," was renamed "God Save the King" and had
a new guitar solo overdubbed four years after the fact). The new disc was
called 'God Save the King' and might still be out there, but it doesn't
especially do justice to either of the original releases. You're much
better off with the live disc, all things considered.

I always hate these threads, they always make me poorer......
Anyway, my current faves:
Greg Bendian/Interzone: Requiem for Jack Kirby: Terrific stuff w/
Bendian on Vibes, Nels + Alex Cline and a bassist I can't recall at
the moment. Great compositions, the writing and instrumentation
remind me of Tortoise with serious improvising chops.
Tim Berne: The Shell Game: w/Craig Taborn(keys) and Tom
Rainey(drums). Taborn first really knocked me out with his work on
the Carl Craig/Innerzone Orchestra disc Programmed. Taborn may be the
most interesting electronic keyboardist since Wayne Horvitz, with
amazing chops and a really interesting sense of timbre.
The new Tool disc, Lateralus, is getting a lot of play around here as
well, amazing and pretty uncompromising stuff for such a popular
band. And it's rare to hear a "new rock" band recorded this well,
very dynamic, not overcompressed, great guitar sounds. I may see them
with Krimson next month, and I'm probably looking forward to Tool
more than Krimson.
I've also been listening to a lot of David Axelrod's late 60s/early
70s stuff, he was a composer/producer/arranger that did a few records
of what I can only call ambitious easy listening, large-scale works
for the cream of LA's session players. His stuff has been heavily
sampled by the likes of DJ Shadow. Great funk grooves with ambitious
horn/string arrangements, wrapped around some pretty silly concepts.
Simultaneously brilliant and very cheesy.
I just got the new Fennesz and Fantomas discs yesterday, played the
Fantomas while working, and it was the perfect thing to hear on an
otherwise pretty frustrating day.

Subject: Xtatika, etc.
Greetings from Knoxville, TN.
Xtatika:
I've been trying to get into this new release, one I was greatly looking
forward to hearing, but I'm afraid that for me it's a bit dull. One of the
problems is that the Korean drums are too low in the mix, and in general I'm
not so sure that fusion attempted really works very well. It's also a lot
more "New York" than Korea, if you catch my drift, with more bondage art
this time coming from Kim Haena's photography. Not that I'm being prudish.
Otomo's Flutter: I'm enjoying this quite a bit, though yes it is more
restrained than his other work, including, I'd say, the standards recording
of Ground Zero. Still quite enjoyable though. I'll be interested in seeing
where Otomo takes this quintet since I doubt it will be as restrained in
future releases.
Been working my way through the rereleases of the BYG/Charly reissues. Not
much to say beyond the predictable superlatives: brilliant, timeless,
engaging, etc. A copy of Alan Silva's three LP release awaits my turntable
back in Seoul. Looking forward to that event.
Other than that, Sachiko M has sent a box of her entire catalogue to my
friend's address in Colorado, where I will be in a couple of weeks. I've
brought my copy of "Do" with me for my journey. And of course the three
CDs from the Barclay box of Fela, which I can't stop playing. Another
strong recommendation would have to be the Atavistic release of Luther
Thomas's "Funky Donkey." which is as stated. Quite pleasurable.
I also have the pleasure of telling the Zorn list that I will be seeing King
Crimson live in Knoxville next Tuesday. I hope to have time to make a
report.
One last request--I plan to interview, if possible, Milles Plateaux founder
Achim Szepanski for the political theory journal "Strategies." Does anyone
happen to have his contact address? Thanks in advance, as always.
