In case it's not clear why this was posted, Zorn did the film's music.
I saw it in Berlin at its packed premier. The topic may not be in
everyone's interest, but the predicament of these people certainly is, and
the individuals chosen to be in the film are very well spoken. The thing
is that because those aspects drew my attention, i hardly heard the score
at all, which isn't to say that you won't. OTOH one of the several
reasons i went to the film was to hear the soundtrack by JZ, so i had
INTENDED to hear it.
Since i'm not familiar with the film music division of Zorn's output, can
anyone say in general or specifically per film how much music actually
made it into the films' soundtracks. (In this case i don't thing the TBG
music is out yet on CD).

For Masonna, well it's all good... or rather, it's much alike from disc to
disc, so if you like one, you'll like most of his work probably. Some of
them stand out, and it's generally accepted that Ejaculation Generater (sic)
on Alchemy is among is best (which I'd approve of), and supposedly Frequency
LSD on Alien8 is "the best Masonna, and in the top 5 noise releases of all
time", a comment which I remember reading in a few places. The excerpts
I've heard were very good indeed.
Other highlights:
Super Compact Disc (Alchemy) -- mastered super loud, a la Merzbow's Pulse
Demon, etc..
Spectrum Ripper
Beauty Beast (3" CD on Blast First)
Good luck!

A big mistake IMO (but I expect more similiar IMOs from list members).
All of the filmworks aere absolutely brillant! The ones i like the
most are I, II (whuich may be my favourite Zorn album), and VIII.

The various troubles of these soundtracks are described in respective
booklets; but most of them were used. On the IV we have a collection
of music for an advertising company? Does anyone knows of any ads that
they were used for?

hey
Did Zorn write any cover notes for the "Trembling Before G-D" CD? I think
his notes for the Filmworks CDs are always very interesting and informative,
and I'm rather curious about his opinions on this subject particular
subject.

Hi there.
"TV Eye" was featured on a compilation named "Rubaiyat" that came out
for an anniversary of the Elektra label.
Hope this helps.

Agree with you.
And yes, he did write about how the project came about for "Trembling...".
Apparently the director had already used a Masada piece for the 1st (rough) cut
of the film, and therefore decided to contact Zorn.
If I remember correctly, the director at first wasn't too happy with the
outcome of Zorn's work. Apparently, it took him some effort to convince her to
use the music...

Okay, so I'm listening to a recording made at last week's Vandermark 5 show
here in Toronto, and all that I can think is that the people who get to
hear this stuff on a regular basis (not to mention the New York contingent)
are the luckiest bastards on the planet. Where their last visit to our fair
city resulted in a California-cool set that brought the '50s to mind on
several occasions, it's like they were trying to flat-out kill the audience
last weekend... Tim Mulvenna, in particular, screwed up his face and
clubbed the drum kit into submission all night long, and It Was Good.
Anyway, from the Archie Shepp-ish fury of their opening number (I didn't
catch the name, showing up as I did just as they were getting started) to
the rolling funk muscle of "Ground", it sounds like their upcoming album
("Acoustic Machine, out sometime in September!" was the announcement of the
evening) will definitely build on the rockier elements of the Spaceways,
Inc. disc in ways that I'll enjoy.
...which brings me to my question for the day: can anybody out there
recommend some particularly interesting (and preferrably in-print) examples
of good, energetic bass clarinet playing? Ken Vandermark's red-scalp solos
continue to impress me, but I'm particuarly taken with them when they're
rounded out by some woody, low-register shuddering that only a clarinet can
deliver. Anyone?
Other good news: it sounds like Bill Laswell has been confirmed for a show
in Toronto sometime next month (at Lee's Palace, of all venues... bring yer
earplugs...), so this summer just keeps on making up for how dead
everything was last year.
Oh, and a quick near-freebie for anybody who is interested: I've been
cleaning out the CD racks again, and it's unlikely that I'll get anything
for it at the used CD stores, so anybody who wants a slightly scuffed-up
copy of the old Sentrax compilation, "Spreading the Virus", is welcome to
it for the cost of postage (say, $2 within North America).
Many happy returns,

Ben Goldberg on any Graham Connah record. Fine listening as a rule, and
Ben's bass clarinet is a wonder. He's fantastic (so's Connah).

There's an album I've been recently listening to a lot signed by Marty
Ehrlich and Ben Goldberg, both on clarinet and bass clarinet. Theyre
accompanied by Trevor Dunn on double-bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums.
Really good and energic and miles away from what these folks usually do.
Another great album "starred by" bass clarinet is "Six Little Pieces for
Quintet" (Hathut) by Sven-Ake Johansson. Don't have it with me so I can't
comment on the band. Not too innovative, IMHO, but indeed a great return to
the 60's free jazz scene.

What's the lineup for Killer Joey? Has it anything to do with the
