That is funny because he is actually credited with "electric shaver" on
Rainbow Electronics 2. And I imagine it is probably broken in some way.
Also, thanks for the recommendations. I have heard several Merzbow CDs but
it is hard to get a grip on what's good, average, or sub-par for him without
spending a ton of money. Now, what about Masonna? Does anyone have
recommendations on his stuff?
Oh, one more thing, Merzbow did a remix of the grindcore-ish band
Discordance Axis, from their album "the Inalienable Dreamless," that you can
download here for free (it's long, though -- 17 minutes or so) at

Subject: Blue Window?
I don't recall anyone of the New Yorkers on this list ever mentioning
going to see plays, but I was wondering if there was someone out
there with some insight into Blue Window reviewed in Wednesday's NY
Times.
It's about a disastrous dinner party and might be good as plays go,
but the sentence in the review that caught my eye is "As one person
tries to explain the genius of the avant garde pianist Cecil Taylor,
others respond by initiating a discussion of about Topo Gigio , the
Italian puppet-mouse who used to beg Ed Sullivan for a goodnight
kiss."

Hello. Please excuse the horrible cross-posting, but I've got a bunch of
CD's and some vinyl I'm looking to sell or maybe trade. A lot of indie
rock-type stuff, some jazz, and some rarities that I'm shamelessly asking
collector-scum prices for. Please e-mail me at jkudler@wesleyan.edu if
you'd like to see the list.
Thanks,

Ricardo, if you are interested in the historical background of Miyamoto Musashi's
life, I can wholeheartedly recommend Eiji Yoshikawa's "Musashi" book to you.
(About 970 pages...)
Over the course of time, Musashi himself had become a VERY good swordsman, and the
older he got, the more highly he valued the spiritual aspect of fighting; the
attitude. His opponent on Ganryu Island was also a very accomplished swordsman,
but too big-headed about it. He'd heard about Musashi and his skills a lot and
therefore wanted to fight him. Musashi wasn't interested at all and tried to avoid
the fight. The finale of the book is the big showdown on Ganryu Island... After
I'd picked the book up I just couldn't stop reading...

Hi folks,
on behalf of WDR (largest german radio station) Zorn is currently composing
a new piece for two pianos and symphony orchestra. The premiere is scheduled
for 14th and 15th December 2001 in Cologne. A US tour of the WDR symphony
orchestra - including this new piece - is planned for the second half of
february 2002.

Go for it!
It really is very good.
And if you do read it, let me know (off-list) what you thought about it!
>
> hmmm... i remember reading that (on that kendo book) but why did

He couldn't escape it anymore.
Rumours had started going around the country that he was no good and scared of his
opponent; there's more to it than this, but I can't recall the details.
> i'm almost sure there's a story on
> musashi father's around there. and fighting schools too... ouh, hell, i

I honestly can't remember anything about the father; but maybe it's just my memory...
But the fight does have something to do with different philosophies of swordsmanship
and also with schools whose reputations had been put to shame by Musashi.
If you like Yoshikawa's historic novel, I think you might also get an interest for
Musashi's book "Classic Guide To Strategy" - on which Zorn's CD of the same name is
based.
Talking about Yoshikawa: his latest publication made available in English, "Taiko", is
also a good read. It's about the life of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who finished what
Nobunaga Oda had started: the unification of Japan.

Subject: Fantomas in Barcelona/Compositions
HI everyone!
After witnessing one of the best concerts I've ever
seen, I must make one question.
Taking into account that Mike Patton can't read or
write music as far as I know, how did he manage to
transfer so complicated compositions to the other
Fantomas members?.
If their music weren't so complicated I would think
that it consists on lots of rehearsals but I'm sure
that can't be their system.
By the way, yesterday they performed Henry Macini's
"Experiment in Terror", "The Omen" main theme, a
Morricone tune I can't remember the title of and a
couple of unrecognized ballads in such a
romantic/heavy metal vein which I guess are included
in "The Director's Cut". It that's been released in
your respective countries, go buy it now!
Greetings,
EfrΘn
P.S: By the way, Evan Lurie's new album title
(Chochin) sounds quite erotic in Spanish (a diminutive
for "pussy"). Maybe he should reconsider that.

Thought some other people might be interested, too...
>Which CD is a good starting point for a noise newbie?
OK, you can't go wrong with any of these.
1. 'Noisembryo' (Releasling Eskimo)
Said by a few to be a good place to start, and I'd
agree.
2. 'Pulse Demon' (Release)
3. 'Tauromachine' (Release)
4. 'Venereology' (Release)
These are mastered at an insanely loud volume for
maximum effect, and it works.
5. 'Door Open At 8am' (Alien 8)
Jazz drumming 'tribute'
6. '1930' (Tzadik)
A good place to start for Zornheads, mainly because
it's on Tzadik. No other reason.
7. 'Noizhead' (Blast First)
Live.
All are still very available except 7, although copys
have been on eBay recently. 1 may be getting more
scarce now also, I don't know.
As for psychedelic noise - try MASONNA. Most of his
releases has a psych tinge to them, because of the
effects he uses.
As for psychedelic power electronics - try early
RAMLEH, especially 'Hand of Glory' 7". All early
RAMLEH material is available from RRR/PURE as a 3 CD
set. Recommended.

>Perfect Pain", with Genesis P. Orridge?
It's really not very good, and DEFINITELY not a good
place to start.

I'm really curious about this album too. As I saw at
towerrecords.com, the price is really high (29$) so I
assume it is an European release (thanks god).
However, the song titles indicate that, once again,
Mr. Lurie is incluing previously released material
also featured in "Selling water by the side of the
river", "Pieces for bandoneon" and "Il piccolo
diavolo". Some of us complained about Zorn's
re-releases fever but Evan Lurie's is by far a worse
case.
Greetings,

You might want to investigate some of the originators of 'noise' music, i.e.
Throbbing Gristle, early SPK, Controlled Bleeding, Einsturzende Neubauten,
Nurse With Wound...not sure about availability these days, but you should
seek out recordings from the early '80s...also don't forget Lou Reed's
'Metal Machine Music'!
