  118. just saw in the new anomalous update (www.anomalousrecords.com) that they've 
  119. got in the Gunter Schneider disc on LondonHALL, which I've never seen 
  120. distributed over here before (it was released in 1993). Schneider is on the 
  121. recently released Dachte Musik double CD on Grob, along with Radu Malfatti, 
  122. Burkhard Stangl, and Franz Hautzinger. the LondonHALL CD is one of the better 
  123. releases I've heard from the earlier years of this scene, pretty unique 
  124. stuff. here's the description:

  147. Just released on CIMP is 'Four Compositions (Duets) 2000' by Anthony Braxton
  148. and Alex Horwitz.  Braxton is credited with alto and soprano saxes,
  149. clarinet, and contrabass clarinet; Horowitz with voice.  The six tracks are
  150. as follows:

  152. 1. Composition 281 (12:52) - dedicated to Master Comedian Jonathan Winter
  153. 2. Composition 282 (34:30) - dedicated to Master Comedian Henny Youngman
  154. 3. Composition 282 (part 2) (13:21)
  155. 4. Composition 280 (2:59) - dedicated to Master Comedian Flip Wilson
  156. 5. Composition 283 (2:38) - dedicated to Master Comedian Lenny Bruce
  157. 6. Composition 281 (part 2) (7:36)

  159. And indeed, Bob Rusch refers in his liner notes as having found the idea of
  160. Braxton recording with a stand-up comedian "so off the wall I couldn't
  161. immediately dismiss it."  Alex Horwitz is apparently a 20-year-old Wesleyan
  162. student and sometime member of a campus improv-comedy troupe Desperate
  163. Measures.
  164.  
  165. Now, look, I'm as willing as anyone to follow Braxton into some of the least
  166. likely circumstances.  I'll always trust him and give him a LOT of rope.
  167. And I can see the potential for a musician performing with an extemporizing
  168. speaker or actor.
  169.  
  170. But on a single listen to about half the disc, all I can say is that I'm a
  171. bit baffled.  To be fair, I don't think it's really meant to be funny.
  172. Braxton's notes talk about the speaker having certain "target subject
  173. choices" for improvising upon.  There are lots of references to such
  174. strategies and procedures as "SCHEDULE MARKER ANNOUNCEMENT INTERJECTIONS"
  175. (all caps his usage), "composition convergence connections," "imprint marker
  176. codes," and so on.  Rusch, in a fit of either vagueness or openminded
  177. fairness, writes, "Interesting also were the various facets that are present
  178. in the improvisation depending on how the listener approaches the
  179. experience.  And to be able to expose may of those facets I found it
  180. necessary to consciously divorce myself from the language of the words and
  181. listen instead to the music of the words - not an instinctive thing for me
  182. or, I'd guess, most listeners."
  183.  
  184. Maybe I'm getting old and uptight, but what it sounds like is a Braxton solo
  185. session backing a bad evening at The Improv.  Imagine the kind of
  186. situational observations that Jerry Seinfeld makes, at their most inane.
  187. Imagine if Ken Nordine weren't hip.  Imagine Andy Rooney on 60 Minutes, or
  188. even more to the point, Charles Grodin on 60 Minutes II.  And while it's
  189. completely wrong for me to weigh in with an overall assessment when I've not
  190. yet made it all the way through the disc, I will say with absolute
  191. confidence and conviction that the segment early on about the DVD is JUST.
  192. PLAIN.  STUPID.
  193.  
  194. I haven't given up on the disc.  Honest to God, I'll try harder.  And I LOVE
  195. the fact that Braxton namechecks Mingus, Sun Ra, John Cage (performed by "my
  196. man David Tudor"!), and Nordine in a single explanatory paragraph.
  197. Sometimes even when I don't like the way a piece sounds, I still love the
  198. way Braxton thinks...
  199.  
  200. But at the moment, I'm just glad I picked up some Charles Ives and the new
  201. Candiria and Soilwork discs on the same shopping excursion.

  247. that I'm listening at home instead of walking around with a portable and
  248. headphones, I've noticed another problem.  There are 15 individual tracks on
  249. the CD, with no indication whatsoever of how they relate to the six
  250. composition titles on the back cover.

  252. Damned frustrating, to say the least.  But, as best as I can make out,
  253. here's the list of pieces on the disc again, along with my own best guesses
  254. (based primarily on simple arithmetic, essentially):

  295. I'd be interested in hearing the reaction to the piece of someone who
  296. didn't speak English (though getting the request to and reaction from
  297. that person from this Anglophone list presents an interesting
  298. problem). Maybe one of our listmembers from outside the country might
  299. try it out on an appropriately-musically-clued non English speaker and
  300. report back?

  461. words, but only to the music of the words, I am pretty sure that a stand =

  463. comedian doing improv -- a genre which I am not very fond of, to say the=20
  464. least -- would have a vastly different effect from someone reciting a sto=
  465. ry=20
  466. or a tale. The fact that Chinese sounds so much more exotic than English =
  467. is=20
  468. also a bonus.

  470. But there are exceptions that work, like when Derek Bailey speaks on his=20
  471. records; the track "George" on the "Playbacks" CD (backed by Jim O'Rourke=

  473. Loren Mazzacane Connors) is the best example I can think of.

  515. I recently picked up a dreadful Hafler Trio album, Four Ways of Saying
  516. Five, that is primarily a spoken lecture with typical H30 noise in the
  517. background, so this thread topic is on my mind lately as well.  I have to
  518. weigh in with Skip and Julien, but Laurie Anderson is very musical in her
  519. speech, and I think it would be difficult to separate her speech from her
  520. music.  She also transitions between speech and singing, which provides a
  521. certain unity of purpose to the entire work.  The failures, I think, are
  522. where the spoken word exists as a separate entity which could exist on its
  523. own as a primary focus, to which music or sound is added later.

  557. As a rule, yes, I don't think they work, but I'd make an exception for Ken
  558. Nordine's "Colors" and Steven Jesse Bernstein's "Prison" (perhaps the best
  559. album Sub Pop ever released). Do they count as "spoken word set to music?"
