I think the single-disc issue of 'someday my prince will come' has
material not in the box set - namely the stuff without coltrane. it also
has the bonus tracks included with the box set. so if you like
'someday...' you'll probably want the single disc, since who knows when
the rest of it will see the light of day in box set format.
speaking of that, where the is the silent way box? is there even a release
date set?

yup, Coltrane's only on 2 tracks--the last things he ever recorded with
Miles. I had actually never heard this material before I got the box. I was
incredibly moved the first time I heard Trane's solo on "Teo," one of the
most powerful statements he ever made. In the context of the box, this is
pretty amazing to hear--it gives you a full understanding of
just how far Trane had come in 5 1/2 years. The Coltrane boxset on Impulse!
picks up where this set leaves off.

Sept. 11. If I recall correctly, a 3-CD (overview) set of Miles' Warner
Bros. recordings is being released Sept. 4.

Promo copies of the 'Silent Way' box have already been sent to reviewers
(tho I didn't get one, wahh) and the September 11 date seems solid.
Supposedly the WB set will be not just an overview, but might also contain
some unreleased stuff - mot importantly, the session with Prince.
Letcha know more when I hear it.

Subject: vinko globokar
I can't remember if I heard about Vinko Globokar, the
Franco-Yugoslav composer, on this list or elsewhere,
but can anyone comment on his work? A description of
one piece reads, "îOblak Semen, a theatrical trombone
solo where Globokar starts playing with only
the mouthpiece of the trombone and gradually
reconstructs the whole instrument while dancing,
playing drums, talking and screaming..." Sounds
bizarre, a lot like Zorn talking about his first brush
with Kagel's music (some piece for
deconstructed/decomposing organ, or some such thing).
Any help would be appreciated,

Subject: caine in israel
hello!
after 3 terror acts taking place in jerusalem over the weekend, there was a
chance to enjoy a positive one in monday night, at the uri caine ensemble's
concert of goldberg variations in the israel festival.
caine preformed with ralph alessi (tp), annegret siedel (v), chris speed
(cl), dj olive, barbara walker (vocals), drew gress (b) and jim black (d).
they were, of course, very good. they had one concert, that was not even
sold-out in not a very big hall, for an hour and a half. many interesting
stuff, especially the singing that got the biggest applause and the drum
work was pretty amazing, included playing the cymbals with a string bow, and
the minimalist work of dj olive was nothing heard before. he got mainly
laughs from the audience, but changed the entire atmosphere, and had a
unique sound performance. caine himself introdused the players and talked to
the audience in hebrew, which is, of course, a great attraction here!
i understood the cds has even much more to offer, i will have to check it
out soon.

there┤s a 3LP set of Braxton┤s Creative Music Orchestra entitled RBN-3K12 on
which Toyozumi appears. It was recorded in France 1972 and unfortunately
long out of print (I think).

Quickly off the top of my head:
Alfred Kazin's "Walker in the City"--NY
Ryu Murakami, "Coin-Locker Babies"--Tokyo's underbelly
Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo Trilogy
William Vollmann's "Butterfly Stories" and "The Atlas" evoke Phnom Penh,
Bangkok, Mogadishu, Kabul, and others--also his "You Bright and Risen
Angels"
Robert Musil's "The Man Without Qualities"--Vienna
For films, I think Lang may have forgotten to mention "Pixote"--Sao Paolo
There's more, but I can't think right now.

Did anyone mention Anthony Braxton's Creative Music Orchestra (1976?)?
Some of the pieces were absolute hoots.
As for the Don Ellis questions..."Tears of Joy" a live (double?) LP from
the early '70's made a big impression on me at the time. He used a
slightly altered big band (only 4 saxes) augmented by an electric string
quartet and more of a rock rhythm section. He was obsessed with odd time
signatures, so many of these pieces have them.

From: "Revue des Fossiles" <revuedesfossiles@hotmail.com>
Subject: Re: vinko globokar
Vinko Globokar is one of _thee_ undisputed major figures in the circles of
post-serialist music. He's worked directly with Stockhausen (interpreting
_Solo_ and the highly recommended _Aus den Sieben Tagen_; which eventually
lead to his split with Stockhausen) as well as Kagel, and has also been
involved with improv groups such as Un Drame Musicale Instante.
Globokar's own works are intensely theatrical in nature, often dealing with
political themes.
Diamanda Galas worked on a piece for Italian television with Globokar
entitled "Un Jour Comme Une Autre" which was based on an a published story
from Amnesty International about a Turkish woman who was arrested for
espionage and tortured to death.
Roger Sutherland says of Globokar in _New Perspectives In Music_:
"Vinko Globokar is one of a number of European composers whose work exhibits
a strong sense of theatre, fusing the influences of Dadaism, Fluxus, German
Expressionism and Existentialist drama. In _Correspondences_ for brass
instruments (1971)and _Atemstudie_ for oboe (1971) he combines the
exploration of new instrumental sonorites with an interest in dramatising
the physical aspects of performance. He is particularly concerned with the
relationships between bodily activity and musical sound. In _Atemstudie_ he
requires the oboist to produce coninuous sounds by means of circular
breathing and has the musician equipped with a contact microphone at the
throat to amplify the sounds of his breathing and other effects, thus
brining the pyhysical exertions of performance directly into the sounding
result. In _Discours IV_ (1985) Globokar employs the entire clarinet family
and uses hybrid methods of sound emission. These include submerging the
instrument in a bowl of water while singing or speaking into the mouthpiece
and exchanging the mouthpiece of the clarinet for that of a trombone,
thereby creating timbres akin to those of brass instruments. _Discours IV_
gives the impression of being improvised, an impression further reinforced
by the fact that the instrumental sounds elude all classifcation.
Globokar's eclectic approach allows him freely to combine timbres and
instrumental practices borrowed from various musical traditions. _Etuda
pour folklora_ (1968) is based on various aspects of Yugoslav folk music,
especially that of Bosnia and Macedonia. The instrumentation comprises
traditional folk instruments such as a Tapan (Macedonian drum), Tambura
(plucked three-stringed instrument), Darabukra (Arab drum played with the
fingers) and Zarb (Persian drum). The work's procedures are based
improvisatory practices of Bosnian folk music and create an atmosphere of
intense and spontanteous interaction between the players."
Three Globokar CDs (four if you count one that he contributed to under the
direction of Michel Portal) were released on the Harmonia Mundi label in the
1990s. As far as I know you may still be able to pick find these new or
used, though they are now out of print.
I haven't had a chance to listen to Vinko's latest CD _Oblak Semen_ just
yet, but am ecstatic about a new release from this distinguised figure . . .
who definitely had an impact on the early works of one Mr. John Zorn.
Hope this helps.
