New Orchestra Workshop, a Vancouver-based outfit that was started about 15 years ago and whose shifting personnel include Paul Plimley, Peggy Lee, Dylan VanDerSchyff, Coat Cook, Ron Samworth, and others.  They've recorded with George Lewis, Barry Guy, Rene Lussier, and Vinnie Golia, as well as doing their own stuff. I'd say that although i'm a big KC fan , i've rarely seen any realy
good effects of crim inspiration Bands tend to just copy them.
So why all this warm up KC shows are in USA? :-(

And now for the HatHut / Matchless / etc. question:

I'm currently on a mission to plug some of the holes in my meager AMM and
Morton Feldman collections, and I was wondering if anyone knew of good
(online) places to get them for the best price. Cadence seems to have them
at the lowest prices I've found (though I was lucky enough to find a Feldman
double CD on Amazon.com for $6.97!); does anyone else have any
recommendations? (I've checked Downtown Music Gallery's website to no avail,
despite a message posted on this list about a month ago saying that all
Matchless CDs were on sale...)

Yes, Kormorany is a contemporary band.  I'm curious - what is it about the
name that made you think they might be older?

They do manage to largely avoid simply imitating Crimson, but the influence
is pretty clear.  Certainly much more clear than in, say, Djam Karet,
another very fine contemporary prog band often described as "King Crimson
meets Pink Floyd."  Djam Karet employs guitars and similar firepower, but in
general they do not employ specifically Crimson-like techniques, where
Kormorany clearly does.  (Sometimes I hear Djam Karet as being closer to
"Mahavishnu fights with Steve Roach over control of the remote"...)

As for all the KC warm-up shows being in the USA - for non Crim fans out
there, Marcin is refering to the fact that Crim is about to do four shows in
Nashville to prepare for a summer tour with Tool and a new album - well, the
answer is really quite simple.  Adrian Belew lives in Nashville, and he owns
the home studio where Crim writes and rehearses these days.  Cheaper than
renting space elsewhere, I'd imagine.

One that hasn't been mentioned is the London Improvisors Orchestra.  This
huge orchestra contains many familiar names from the British scene:  Evan
Parker, John Butcher, Tom Chant reeds, John Edwards and Simon Fell double
bass, Steve Beresford and Veryan Weston piano, Louis Moholo and Mark Sanders
percussion, and this is only a fraction of the people involved.  There are
two recordings on the Emanem label, both 2CD sets: Proceedings and the newly
released The Hearing Continues.  The interesting concept here is that
different "improvisors" get a chance to conduct either their own or another
member's composition.  So, though the pieces vary from sections of total
chaos to very organised, there is still a sense of continuity and structure.
  Perhaps a bit more extreme than Barry Guy's LJCO, featuring more strings,
dynamic arrangements and more free playing.  The Orchestra was recently
featured on BBC3's Freedom of the City Festival.  They are quite a sight
with as many as four drummers, three pianos, three double bass, an army of
reeds, guitars, brass all playing at the same time.

And mention must be made here of Martin Davidson and his Emanem label.  I
can't think of another label, save FMP and hatArt, brave enough to release
not only the above material but a 3CD Strings with Evan Parker, along with
so many documents of the British jazz/free/improvising scene.  Many of their
titles go back to the very beginning of the careers of the creators of this
music, ie Derek Bailey, John Stevens, SME, Evan Parker, Kenny Wheeler, etc.
Mr Davidson's liner notes to many of these recordings add quite a bit of
insight as to what is going on.  So, hat's off to MR D and here's hoping he
continues for many years to come.

Fabulous and essential.  There is a beatless track, all electronics with
great swooshes and drones in many layers, almost Teutonic in nature, then a
noisy rock barrage where the sax player tries to get Miagete goran, one of
the Plays Standards selections, heard through the din.  The finale is
wonderful version of Consume Red with a completely different ending then
the ReR studio version.

was really curious abt this one as last year i was in the minority finding
ware tedious,although ive always found him better on disc than live.
(for details check my coverage of the fest for signal to noise.  this years
festival im covering for allaboutjazaz.com)  it was great night, but, alreay
tired
after along days work and then fest, i did leave in the middle of ware/ali.
ali didnt seem his usually cheerful self when i saw him before his set,
tho it may have merely been his focussing on the performance to come,
which was just ware playing a whole lots of notes, many in the standard
freeform,
but none with a connection.   both just played a whole lot of notes and
so i went home midset to sleep on the subway, listening to a boot of brian
wilson's
smile outttakes.  i felt better.

Yesterday (23 May 2001), as it happened, by chance I found myself playing a=20
recently acquired CD the material upon which was recorded and mastered at=20
Survival Studio NYC on May 23 and 24, exactly one year ago. So, in=20
celebration of this anniversary, I have decided to 'review' the item.=20
But first, a CAUTION:=20
The following material is written in language, generally that known as=20
English. Language is a contrivance of sentient humans designed to assist=20
communication. It is not to be confused with communication. In use, it has a=
=20
propensity for leading as much to misunderstanding as to understanding, the=20
fruit of successful communication. The words I use in this text I intend=20
generally to be taken as meaning what a routine dictionary would ascribe to=20
them as meaning. Some or all of the words may be written tongue in cheek, my=
=20
cheek or that of another! My observation derived from years of practice and=20
observation is that performed music and language about performed music are=20
mutually incompatible. It is for this reason that this review may tell you=20
little or nothing of the music on the CD. End of CAUTION.  =20
This review is titled, 'As If A Heart's Lips at Work Had Said, "LEER!"' This=
=20
is a mark of respect to the three musicians involved. You may derive their=20
names from this title. The CD cover has a child-like, bright, colourful=20
[British English orthography] and innocent hep art painting executed by one=20
of the musicians that depicts the three players. The music derives from the=20
players' use of drums, bass and tenor saxophone or bass clarinet. All the=20
seven 'compositions' are credited to all the musicians and an anagram of eac=
h=20
appears within this material. The trio produced the release.=20
There are 'Notes' (written, not musical) accompanying the release. Why? I=20
wonder; a good question - so pose it I do! They reproduce writing done late=20
at night listening (no featherer of beds about) in New York City and are=20
formatted so as to indicate poetic intentions at their outset and close.=20
Centrally lie the 'readings' of the tracks, conspiratorially couched. One=20
misses the Trane; it came too early, though a Cresta Run almost appears. =20
CAUTION. Beware 'Notes'. All 'Notes'. Notes can sow seeds of such destructio=
n=20
that a piece first listened to after their intake could fail to overcome the=
=20
awful chains they make trying to tie down, to still and render harmless thes=
e=20
efforts of musicians. (You can see that I ain't reformed yet!) Is your=20
assailed id leased to such otiose activity as this? Notemakers!? As a wild=20
hog swanks, we go under, truffles not snouted or outed. Ye cad slaves, think=
