This doesn't surprise me in the least. Spring Heel Jack has done some
pretty cool stuff, moving away from strict d 'n b. John Surman played on
their last CD. The Thirsty Ear disc sounds very intriguing,

not to be redundant, but the most of the records I mentioned re: arrangers
has some great & interesting string writing. especially AN IMAGE by Lee
Konitz on the LEE KONITZ MEETS JIMMY GIUFFRE (verve) 2cd set. (it gets plenty
of time in my player as well!) ditto for the Artie Shaw records with strings.

PS: just came back from the Vision Festival. saw a really bad duo of David
Ware & Rashied Ali. Ali was great, but I found that Ware was totally lacking
in ideas, sensitivity, etc. and he was NEGATIVE as hell... (and I've seen him
about half a dozn times, same reaction.) he could've been in his bedroom. why
on earth is this guy so popular? can anybody who's into him tell me?

Subject: Sony Ligeti series on sale CHEAP at Tower
Hey campers:
As everyone may already know, Tower Records has been in some shaky financial
straits of late, and they're taking some rather drastic actions to shore up
the bottom line - mostly having to do with their classical departments.
Some indie labels will soon be disappearing from their shelves altogether,
although not Tzadik or any of the other Koch-distributed labels. And in the
case of the major labels, there are some massive discounts afoot.
Why am I bothering you with this? One reason only... I was in the downtown
NYC Tower this afternoon, and they were setting up a huge sale on Sony
Classical releases. And the much lauded (and rightly so) Ligeti Edition has
all been marked down to a mere $9.99 per disc.
Of course, the series didn't get very far on Sony (we'll hope for better
from the Teldec series). But there are some screaming bargains to be had -
especially the Arditti Quartet recordings of the complete string quartet
music and the Etudes for Piano performed by Pierre-Laurent Aimard. I think
there are either six or seven individual discs, as well as the opera 'Grand
Macabre,' which is a multi-disc set that should be sale priced
proportionally as well. And I have yet to see any of this stuff turn up
used, so I plan on filling the holes in my collection pronto.
There's also a ton of Bernstein recordings on sale, along with some Glenn
Gould, Philip Glass, and Lotte Lenya's Weill recordings (which were playing
in the store while I shopped, to my great delight), among other highlights.
It's definitely worth checking out, if you're into any of this stuff.
(And Bostonians, you should maybe check sooner than most - I just read a
confirmed report today that your big Tower store on Newbury Street is going
away altogether, making way for a new Virgin Megastore. Tower is reportedly
looking for new real estate, but in the meantime, stock up... The Tower in
Harvard Square supposedly won't be affected, but it really doesn't compare,
does it?)

Subject: (no subject)
The day before yesterday (23 May 2001), as it happened, by chance I found=20
myself playing a recently acquired CD the material upon which was recorded=20
and mastered at Survival Studio NYC on May 23 and 24, exactly one year ago.=20
So, in celebration of this anniversary, I have decided to 'review' the item.=
=20
But first, a CAUTION:=20
The following material is written in language, generally that known as=20
English. Language is a contrivance of sentient humans designed to assist=20
communication. It is not to be confused with communication. In use, it has a=
=20
propensity for leading as much to misunderstanding as to understanding, the=20
fruit of successful communication. The words I use in this text I intend=20
generally to be taken as meaning what a routine dictionary would ascribe to=20
them as meaning. Some or all of the words may be written tongue in cheek, my=
=20
cheek or that of another! My observation derived from years of practice and=20
observation is that performed music and language about performed music are=20
mutually incompatible. It is for this reason that this review may tell you=20
little or nothing of the music on the CD. End of CAUTION. =20
This review is titled, 'As If A Heart's Lips at Work Had Said, "LEER!"' This=
=20
is a mark of respect to the three musicians involved. You may derive their=20
names from this title. The CD cover has a child-like, bright, colourful=20
[British English orthography] and innocent hep art painting executed by one=20
of the musicians that depicts the three players. The music derives from the=20
players' use of drums, bass and tenor saxophone or bass clarinet. All the=20
seven 'compositions' are credited to all the musicians and an anagram of eac=
h=20
appears within this material. The trio produced the release.=20
There are 'Notes' (written, not musical) accompanying the release. Why? I=20
wonder; a good question - so pose it I do! They reproduce writing done late=20
at night listening (no featherer of beds about) in New York City and are=20
formatted so as to indicate poetic intentions at their outset and close.=20
Centrally lie the 'readings' of the tracks, conspiratorially couched. One=20
misses the Trane; it came too early, though a Cresta Run almost appears. =20
CAUTION. Beware 'Notes'. All 'Notes'. Notes can sow seeds of such destructio=
n=20
that a piece first listened to after their intake could fail to overcome the=
=20
awful chains they make trying to tie down, to still and render harmless thes=
e=20
efforts of musicians. (You can see that I ain't reformed yet!) Is your=20
assailed id leased to such otiose activity as this? Notemakers!? As a wild=20
hog swanks, we go under, truffles not snouted or outed. Ye cad slaves, think=
!=20
Think for ye'selves=E2=80=A6End of CAUTION.
But enough of this Oulipo frivolity; six days I labour but on the seventh=20
day, I slack. Who wrote the 'notes'?!=20
Postscript poem:
I am immune to punny poemists, ten a penny, casual composers, alphabet=20
re-arrangers. Rather, for me, he she or it that has found music diminished a=
s=20
words eat into its flesh.
All the besht!

I'm eagerly awaiting next weeks Vision-Fest reunion of one
of my favorite big bands of the 80's; Jemeel Mondoc's Jus Grew
Orchestra. Carla Bley still leads big bands(at least in Europe). and
Keith Tippett has a large ensemble that performs regularly in the UK.

Subject: Re: Victo 2001
It is interesting to track general sentiments about the Victoriaville fest.
Having attended for quite awhile now, I have seen it change while somehow
still remaining the same. The change is a subtle shift in focus from the
first generation European free improvisers (Guy, Barre Phillips,
Brotzmann...) and allegiances with festivals like Taktlos and Moers toward
electroacoustic improv and allegainces with festivals like Musique Action
and musicians like Muller, and Doneda to name a few. What is certainly clear
is that Victo is not a JAZZ festival. (Though I'm not sure it ever was.)
What is particularly interesting about any festival are the synergies and
contrasts betweeen concerts. Getting to hear Poire_Z and
Butcher/Charles/Dorner back-to-back was something I'll not forget for quite
awhile. (And I am on Brian's side with this one. Having had a chance to hear
Poire_Z in Boston and then again at Victo was a real treat.) Ken lists a few
examples of concerts in Toronto (though Butcher was completely different
than I have ever heard him before in the context of the trio at Victo). Sure
there were some less interesting things and even complete failures, but I
found myself consistently challenged through almost everything (if only to
figure out why I disliked something so much.) I'd still rather do that than
go to a festival with few surprises.
And of course, Victo has one of the best atmospheres for hanging out,
chatting, arguing... that I've come across.

I don't know if anybody mentioned this before, but for
me, the arranger of arrangers is Carla Bley. I
perceive great skills of perfectionism in her, but one
that goes amusing thanks to her great sense of humor.
That's why I never thought of hear as a jazz musician
per se.
Steve Bernstein, who's not my cup of tea, could be a
good choice anyway.

There's a 2xLP _At Fillmore_ that swings mightily. Includes the
almost-sciencefictional spectacle of a 1970 Fillmore Auditorium audience
clapping along in 7/4. (And who could resist a song title like "Pussy
