  59. successful transactions with them, so maybe they were just on a lunch break
  60. or something...?

  96. I don't think I disliked Witness as much as Mathieu, although it certainly
  97. wasn't as compelling - either musically or politically - as I had expected.

  99. For a project that is so closely related to political movements and artists,
  100. Dave seemed somewhat reluctant to make any connections for the audience, save
  101. for his reference to trying Henry Kissinger as a war criminal (which drew hearty
  102. applause from the crowd). I kept thinking back to the anti-landmine concert I
  103. saw in December and the way artists like Steve Earle and Emmylou Harris were
  104. able to relate the music to the cause. I think Dave may have assumed far too
  105. much knowledge on the part of the audience, and might have spent more time
  106. talking about how the various sources inspired him. (Interestingly, the normally
  107. reserved Victo organizer Michel Lavasseur made a much better political point
  108. about the police-state atmosphere at the Quebec summit when he was introducing
  109. Francois Houle on Sunday.)
  110.  
  111. I thought the first piece Witness played was pretty sloppy and unfocused, while
  112. their final number and the encore were at the level one normally expects from
  113. Dave's bands. Along the way, the highlight for me was a very beautiful, extended
  114. duet between Bryan Carrott and Erik Friedlander.

  116. Perhaps it was just where I was sitting (about seven rows from the front - stage
  117. right) but I couldn't hear Joe Daley at all, and thought he could've been
  118. employed much more effectively. Chris Speed was somewhat underused, as well. I'm
  119. not usually a fan of Ikue, either, but liked the way Dave had her echoing what
  120. he did on trumpet.

  122. Bar Kokhba was absolutely the highlight of the festival. Great show.

  156. It doesn't appear that anyone else answered this while I was away, so, for
  157. the record, yes, Gil is deceased.  The band is now led by his son, the
  158. trumpeter Miles Evans.  It used to play every Monday night at the
  159. now-defunct club Sweet Basil for a couple of years after Gil's passing (this
  160. was the first New York show I ever saw, back when I was a tourist and my
  161. sister was at NYU).  Apparently Miles E. decided to get the band back
  162. together again.  The question in my mind is, will they be playing the
  163. "classic" Evans charts of the '50s and '60s (which other repertoire bands do
  164. quite well already) or will they be playing the more amorphous electric jams
  165. of the '80s, which largely failed or succeeded on the strength of the
  166. soloists (the better ones were Arthur Blythe, George Adams, Billy Harper and
  167. Dave Sanborn).

  169. Regarding other things worth seeing at the MJF this year, I don't remember
  170. the whole lineup, but you might keep an eye out for Chris Potter, an evening
  171. of improv with Barre Phillips and friends, a potent double bill of Femi Kuti
  172. and Antibalas, and two nights of Steve Lacy.

  208. all Polish bands would be the same as anyone elsewhere thinking I know all
  209. the American bands.  Sorry.

  211. Anyway, here's my two cents.  I tracked down the latest (and only?) disc by
  212. Kormorany, 'Teraz,' after reading a very, very positive review in The Wire.
  213. It's on the Antena Krzyku label.  The review posited that the band had been
  214. shacked up with a copy of 'Larks' Tongues' or words to that effect.  I found
  215. the disc through my friends at Tamizdat, a great source for tracking down
  216. hard-to-find Eastern European releases (they're especially good for Czech
  217. and Slovak material, but do a decent job with Russian and Polish stuff as
  218. well... www.tamizdat.org).  Their website mentions the KC link as well, and
  219. there's a soundbite or two available.
  220.  
  221. To my ears, both The Wire and the Tamizdat website overstate it a little
  222. bit.  Don't get me wrong... this is a really fine modern prog record, with
  223. solid original material bracketing covers of KC's "The Talking Drum" and the
  224. old favorite "Besame Mucho."  The musicianship is fine as well.  And there
  225. are unmistakable influences from the '74 Crim, the '84 Crim and even a bit
  226. of the modern Crim.  But in my opinion, these are just influences... I
  227. didn't feel overall that KC was the beginning and ending of this band's
  228. interests, nor did I feel that they were quite on KC's level as yet.  But
  229. it's a damned impressive start.

  243. I would add to Steve's recommendation, either of the two shows featuring
  244. Francois Houle and Benoit Delbecq. Saw them doing duets in Ottawa a few years
  245. ago and they were stunning.
  246. They are playing both duets and in a group setting in Montreal this year (July
  247. 1 and 2, I think).
