  64. prog -fusion - rock, it may be really ok sometimes. Kind of ELP in a
  65. more dynamic and less pretetious way. I've got enough of such stuff

  238. I haven't attended all the concerts, so I can't give a complete report as 
  239. some other will be able to do. I actually only attended five concerts: The 
  240. Shalabi Effect, poire_z, Dave Douglas Witness, Otomo Yoshihide Cathode and 
  241. Francisco Lopez/Amy Denio... I would have stayed for Monday (ok, with the 
  242. exception of Zorn/Frith/Laswell/Lombardo to be honest), but it meant more 
  243. money than I wanted to spent on this...
  244.  
  245. The Shalabi Effect were, in my opinion, very good. But, I might not be 
  246. objective here as I really like what they are doing... They played for 80 
  247. minutes without interruption which was too long for some folks. I don't think 
  248. it was, but I understand that it was the sixth concert of the day for some 
  249. and the chairs of the CEGEP are not very comfortable... The intro certainly 
  250. was very nice: a powerful drone made by the guitars of Sam Shalabi and 
  251. Anthony Seck while Alexandre St-Onge was bowing powerfully his bass (which 
  252. was lying on the floor). One thing I appreciated is the fact that they 
  253. improved the integration between their electronic side and their "psychedelic
  254. /arab" side.
  255.  
  256. poire_z played one long 60 minutes piece. It was nice. I think I would have 
  257. appreciated two pieces instead of one. It would have cut a certain linearity 
  258. in their music that was especially noticable by the end. Still a nice show 
  259. however.
  260.  
  261. I was quite disapointed by Dave Douglas' concert. It really is the low point 
  262. for me. If I hadn't bought a ticket especially for this one, I probably would 
  263. have left before the end. It really didn't do anything for me. I don't know 
  264. why exactly. To me, the interpretation seemed contained. The compositions are 
  265. not bad, but there are some repetitions and some parts that I would classify 
  266. as boring. However, the crowd probably liked it as they got a stading ovation 
  267. and played a short encore. Of course, Dave Douglas, Mark Feldman, Erik 
  268. Friedlander and the others played well, but something was missing. I also 
  269. find myself enjoying what Ikue Mori was doing... which I find very surprising 
  270. as I usually don't...
  271.  
  272. To be honest, I still don't know what to think of Otomo's concert. The ending 
  273. surely was beautiful, but the first 10-15 minutes would require a second 
  274. listen. The first track they played was "Modulation" (or "Modulations"?) and 
  275. it was quite minimalist. There were some modulations, but they were not so 
  276. easily noticable in my opinion, espcially at the beginning. It was more like 
  277. a 15 minutes very high pure tone. The sound was not so loud in the Colisee in 
  278. fact. A little louder sound probably would have helped me to concentrate only 
  279. on the music. In fact, a phone rang behind the stage at around five minutes 
  280. (well, something like that) and I could hear it perfectly (and I was not in 
  281. the front)...
  282.  
  283. Lopez did pretty much his usual thing. I was curious to hear how the presence 
  284. of Amy Denio would change his live performance. The differences were very 
  285. small. The main difference was probably the presence of higher frequencies, 
  286. something that is not so frequent in Lopez' works (with the exception of 
  287. _Untitled #90_ maybe!). It was quite nice. This first piece was 30 minutes 
  288. (well, this is what we were told). The second piece was Lopez solo (again 30 
  289. minutes). As I said before, pretty much the usual thing, but beautiful and 
  290. mind-blowing as usual! To end the piece, he progessivly created a wall of 
  291. sound and suddently cut the sound... as usual... I was discussing it with 
  292. somebody after the show and we compared it with what godspeed you black 
  293. emperor! are doing: it's sometimes a little easy and predictable, but it's so 
  294. good that you can only like it!! There was one new thing (to my knowledge at 
  295. least) though. At one point, the sound of birds could be clearly identifed 
  296. and the sound of leaves a little later on. Now, that's not usual! Especially 
  297. because of the way he's equalizing everything. Probably my favorite concert 
  298. along with the Shalabi Effect.

Bar Kokhba show:  Excellent!  Ribot played a epiphone 335 red and Zorn kept mentioning that he was the king of "New Jersey Surf guitar"... Friedlander was on fire... He and Cohen did a number together that was just stunning... Joey and Cyro also did a percussion number that was amazing... Feldman did a solo piece... The project played mostly things from Circle Maker... Zorn directed from the side lines... I was able to meet everyone after the show...

Frith/Laswell/Lombardo/Zorn:  Great improvs... What else would one expect?  Lombardo was brutal!  I'd never had the pleasure of seeing Fred Frith play and he was facinating... "Invintive" maybe the word... Zorn did very little directing but the band seemed to just go places on it's own anyway... Laswell was his usual, and Zorn was usually on the mark... Great show...

Bill Frisell Trio:  Bill was the best guitarist I've seen live to date... Amazing!!!  The sampler he used was out of this world... Kenny Wollenson was in a trance inspired by the connection between Frisell and Tony Scherr... Great show too!!!  What can I say, it was a great festival!  I met Frisell and Kenny before the show... Great guys...
