  39. The Michael Snow album referred to earlier is a three-disc set called 
  40. Snow Solo Piano Solo Snow and it's from the Canadian label Ohm 
  41. Editions. One disc of old fashioned jazz/blues (Snow is a pretty good 
  42. player in this mode), one of compositions & improvisations played 
  43. live (as noted earlier, Snow is a founding member of the Canadian 
  44. free music group CCMC) , and one of computer-manipulated performances 
  45. using a disklavier.
  46.  
  47. Two other discs come to mind that might be of interest in terms of 
  48. extreme piano usage:
  49.  
  50. This Piano Thing by Gordon Monahan (Swerve Editions) with the title 
  51. work and an earlier piece called Piano Mechanics, is nearly all 
  52. played by hand (there's one brief section in Piano Mechanics in which 
  53. Monahan is assisted by one of Trimpin's vorsetzer. This is a 
  54. beautifully (and quirkily) recorded album of very odd piano 
  55. techniques. Piano Mechanics is for standard piano; This Piano Thing 
  56. is played using a prepared piano, but it does not sound anything like 
  57. Cage's music for prepared piano. Except for Denman Maroney's work, I 
  58. don't know of anything approaching Monahan's piano playing. Most of 
  59. the time it doesn't sound like a piano at all.
  60.  
  61. Flies in the Face of Logic (Pogus) with works by Steve MacLean, CW 
  62. Vrtacek & Nick Didkovsky. Most of this disc uses extreme 
  63. computer-manipulation of piano samples rather than "real" piano 
  64. playing, but it's relevant if for no other reason than the recording 
  65. of a piano dropped from a crane in 1992.

  75. More than a week ago someone (Steve Smith? I've already looked 15, 16 
  76. digests back and now I can't find it) asked about recent classical 
  77. releases from Hat now. I've been too busy to respond, but here are a 
  78. few discs that I like pretty well:
  79.  
  80. Clarence Barlow: Musica Derivata - These four works derive from 
  81. earlier music (by Beethoven, Stockhausen, Clementi, Schumann, Ravel) 
  82. in unusual ways. In the first piece on the disc, called 1981, he 
  83. designed a statistical system for selecting portions from three works 
  84. for classical piano trio (piano, violin & cello) so that over the 
  85. course of the work, the three players are always playing something 
  86. drawn from these prior compositions. There's a set of variations on a 
  87. theme from Beethoven's 32nd piano sonata, played on a MIDI grand 
  88. which adds material that the live performer could not physically play 
  89. all at once. This process continues until the live musician stops and 
  90. the computer takes over entirely. The disc is generally playful and 
  91. formally interesting. I've liked everything I've heard by Barlow, I 
  92. wish there were more recordings available.

  94. Morton Feldman: Atlantis is a good disc of works for orchestra with 
  95. two mid-1970s concerto-like pieces (String Quartet & Orchestra and 
  96. Oboe & Orchestra) as well as the earlier title work which may be 
  97. Feldman's largest scale graphic notation piece.
  98.  
  99. Jo Kondo: The two discs of works by Kondo offer Western listeners the 
  100. most sustained look at the work of this Japanese composer. I like the 
  101. chamber music disc very well, haven't really spent much time with the 
  102. piano disc yet.
  103.  
  104. Schoenberg: Piano Music - a swell collection which includes many 
  105. works without opus numbers (these are from all periods, not just 
  106. early works), as well as all of the more common pieces. Played very 
  107. well by the under-recorded Pi-hsien Chen.
  108.  
  109. James Tenney: Music for Solo Percussion/Music for Violin & Piano - 
  110. Tenney's a great composer who has done a little of everything - if 
  111. he'd stuck with one style or strategy, he'd probably be a lot better 
  112. known. These discs don't come close to showing off the whole range of 
  113. things he's done, but they do offer some variety into his various 
  114. approaches. The percussion works are described in the notes as being 
  115. examples of what Vinko Globokar once called "anti-badabum" music. The 
  116. virtuosity involved in them is less about huge flashy gestures over a 
  117. many timbral colors and instruments. Rather they offer a very focused 
  118. look at very particular performance techniques (the most extreme 
  119. example of this on these discs is a long roll on a gong that very 
  120. slowly crescendos and decrescendos over the course of 17 minutes.)
  121.  
  122. Stefan Wolpe: Passacaglia - a re-issue of a rare vinyl release of 
  123. works by a very interesting composer whose works ran the gamut from 
  124. early dissonant political and dada inspired works through strict 
  125. serial pieces to what seems to me to be a looser, more lyrical atonal 
  126. music (which are usually serial at the structural level) in his final 
  127. years. This disc moves toward the lyrical side of things with a 
  128. quartet for trumpet, tenor saxophone (Al Cohn!), piano & percussion 
  129. and a stunning performance by David Tudor of the solo piano work that 
  130. gives the disc its title.

  132. This last one came out back when they still used jewel boxes for the 
  133. series. I don't know if you have access to those, but there's A LOT 
  134. of great stuff prior to their use of cardboard sleeves, only some of 
  135. which is likely to be re-issued.

  146. pointing inside a piano to get some loooooonnnnnggggg echoes and sympathetic
  147. tones.  I saw him do it at a duo concert with Roscoe Mitchell.  I know there are
  148. a couple of recordings with this "effect" (perhaps the Waldron duets on Soul
  149. Note?  (Patrice?)

  151. re destruction:  The Sonic Youth "20th Century" set has a video of them
  152. hammering nails into the keyboard of a piano until it's completely destroyed --
  153. I found it hard to watch.

  155. I used to think The Who was so cool for smashing everything up at the end and
  156. feeling cheated if they didn't.  Now it seems so pointless (though Leo Fender
  157. once said he thought it was fine, since it meant more sales for his company).

  183. It's a 2xCD affair, with disc one being a studio recording from 1986
  184. recorded at Radio City Studios and features Zeena Parkins, Bill Frisell,
  185. Elliot Sharp, Arto Lindsay, Wayne Horvitz, Christian Marclay, Bobby
  186. Previte, Bob James, Guy Klucevsek, David Weinstein, Anthony Coleman,
  187. Carol Emanuel, Jim Staley, and John Zorn listed as "prompter."

  189. Disc two is a live recording from Renseleer Polytechnic Institute October
  190. 21, 1985.  It features most of the same line up, including JA Deane, but
  191. minus others.  The booklet inclosed features the flags that Zorn holds up
  192. during the performance, and give indications as to their meanings, but
  193. it's a little over my head.  Took a while for me to get into it, as it
  194. was one of my first Zorn acquisitions, but it's a joy to listen to when I
  195. have the time to properly digest it.  I'm sure it must really have the
  196. best impact when it's viewed live.

  255. I think that the live shows of the COBRA Ensemble - Cincinnati, from spring 
  256. 99, will be released. I know that Nathan Fuhr did the mastering/production in 
  257. New York (after losing all the masters in a robbery and getting many of them 
  258. back much later in some sort of miracle! -- hence the 2 yr delay), but I 
  259. think there is some issue regarding distribution label. I heard it was to be 
  260. Innova but Zorn intervened so maybe it will be Tzadik. Don't know for sure,

  265. well nothing really compares to the tokyo ops, but i think the cinci group 
  266. took cobra in a different direction than the kf disc, and it seems from what 
  267. i've heard the general hyper nyc mentality toward the piece. was quite a 
  268. diverse vocabulary of players (remember the hungarian baroque countertenor?! 
  269. and composer Mike Barnhart on sax but often pulling-off strange and beautiful 
  270. moments with his wild zakir hussian tongue, powerbook, or or just a 
  271. transister radio?!), rather than an all experimental/jazz/downtown cast. and 
  272. progressively less psychodrama, turning out some abstract, patient, and quite 
  273. beautiful shows (one of which, at Southgate ballroom, featured a huge Cage 
  274. MUSICIRCUS from precisely 12-1am, then resuming cobra)
  275.

  294. smolka, kurtag, and others i dont recall (and student works of course).  [and 
  295. zorn content for the record, heard about it from Nathan Fuhr (COBRA Ensemble

  318. Faust, 1st North American tour, Seattle show, upright piano smashed with 
  319. sledge hammer, perhaps a bit corny & cliche, but still somehow satisfying to 
  320. witness it live...

  322. The Nice, Keith Emerson's 1st band, Emerson abused his Hammond B3 throughout 
  323. the concert (not just to create some cheesy  theatrics) stabbing the 
  324. keyboard with knives, rocking it back and forth, pushing it over on the 
  325. floor or across the stage into the speakers, fiddling inside with the guts, 
  326. the amazing part being that every abuse created unique and weird sounds not 
  327. usually produced by the instrument...

  416. his home town, Chicago, which attract musicians in that same vein...is there 
  417. anyone on the list who could make some suggestions...

  435. avant/improv scenes in the country.  The Empty Bottle and the Velvet Lounge

Listened to this one a couple of times already.  Good CD, but it's a *very* restrained effort compared to what I expected.  Most suprised with Merzbow's involvement--or lack of, to be closer to the truth.  Outside of supplying a few sine waves, he practically goes unnoticed.  99% of FMP's catalog offers a more crazed atmosphere than this one, and I'd be lying if I didn't say I was a bit upset that Yoshihide doesn't challenge my senses a bit more here.
