  48. This goes in a different direction than some of the other recommendations, 
  49. but the band Ulver did a 2CD called "Themes from William Blake's Heaven and 
  50. Hell" that may fit this bill. Ok, Ulver started out out as a "black metal" 
  51. band, in fact one of the better known of the notorious Norwegian scene (and 
  52. their stuff in that vein is really great), but by now their metal roots are 
  53. almost entirely indiscernible. I actually don't own this album (yet) but 
  54. I've heard bits and pieces -- definitely interesting, hard to classify w/ 
  55. all sorts of trip-hop and semi-industrial beats, ambient atmospherics, 
  56. theatrical vocal parts ... Aquarius Records has a good review of this album 
  57. on their site.

  59. You can also go to <www.jester-records.com>, where they have reviews, MP3s, 
  60. etc. also, the label has several other interesting, unclassifiable bands 
  61. that may interest people just looking for something different: Arcturus, 
  62. Bogus Blimp, When, Esperanza. Don't really know how to compare this stuff to 
  63. ANYTHING -- maybe if you like Residents, Disco Volante-era Mr. Bungle, Aphex 
  64. Twin ... I don't know, there are some connections with the above-mentioned 
  65. here and there. This is the kind of stuff that, if they had any sort of 
  66. common sense or open-mindedness, the Wire would be covering, but oh well.

  93. '80s-'90s. Can somebody be more talented than him? Is there anything that he 
  94. does not know? Is there anything that he cannot do?

  113. Yeah, I considered including this in my post yesterday -- it did make my
  114. top 10 list for 1999 -- but I skipped it b/c they mostly sing the texts
  115. & I was limiting myself to spoken (rather than sung) poetry. But yeah,
  116. great record. They screw around alot with the cd encoding too -- my
  117. favorite is the track with the stuff from the backside of one of the
  118. manuscript pages, on which the CD time count runs backwards.

  132. Jayne Cortez did an album a few years back called 'Let There Be Drums' with 
  133. members of Ornette's Prime Time band, including Denardo on drums (she's his 
  134. mother & former wife of Ornette). Also, but a little off the topic here, is 
  135. an album I've never heard, and have searched many years for: Yvette Mimieux 
  136. reading Baudelaire's 'Fleurs de Mal' with music by Ali Akbar Khan. Anyone 
  137. know it? Kerouac's readings with Zoot Sims & Al Cohn are marvellous, and 
  138. while it is really prose, Jack has such a musical voice, it is pure joy. The 
  139. album that Brion Gysin (mentor of William Burroughs and inventor of cutups) 
  140. made with Steve Lacy on hatArt ('Songs') is my favourite poetry & jazz 
  141. album. And of course, the ultimate bebop hipster jazz poet, Lord Buckley 
  142. made such sublime musical poetry without instruments!

  165. Although it's not jazz or improv (neither's Prince though) it's a short
  166. segue from Byron Gysin to William Burroughs to Mark E. Smith of The Fall,
  167. whose 'sprechstimme' readings of his work (he has released a spoken word
  168. album) with or without the 'country and northern' sound of his band is
  169. also great lyric over music.

  171. The funniest one is called Papal Visit (a cut off Room To Live from
  172. probably 1980 or so) and sounds like it's recited by a drunk slouched in a
  173. doorway under the radar of a security police sweep and barely coherent
  174. enough to register the Pope's motorcade as it parades down some side
  175. street.

  235. i usually live 20-30% of the tracks per disc incl concerts.
  236. i love the black album, which i got on original vinyl bootleg.

  239. every disc mebbe 60-70% i dance to or smile.
  240. choice official cuts, tho: 7, kiss (12"), controversy (12")

  293. Lord Buckley, Ken Nordine -- this is where it really comes across for me.  I
  294. have no use for hearing poetry (prefer it on the page myself).  But you get
  295. monologists like them two and you're really off to a whole other race.
  296. Until Gil-Scott came in, those two had that kind of thing sewn up for me
  297. (then Gil took it to about five levels past whatever it could've been).

  375. No, it's definitely more 'jazzy', in the realm of say, Pat Metheny's trio.
  376. If you want world stuff stick to Shepik's "The Well" and "The Loan", or
  377. Pachora. That said, it is at least a bit more adventurous than you may
  378. expect from such an album, with a few odd times, some world references and
  379. one or two other surprises...

  421. To my ears, my favorite album is, uh, the retroactively eponymous one,
  422. with Sexy MF and all that. Not a bum track on it, and it holds together
  423. pretty coherently. I also love almost all of Purple Rain, while the
  424. black album just doesn't quite do it for me.

  427. something like that. At what I saw of his recent performance on the
  428. Tonight Show was just burnin'.

  468. I'm not really sure what you mean by "fusion rhythm thing," but you might 
  469. want to try weather report's I Sing the Body Electric.  The last half is a 
  470. live show in Japan that absoloutely burns.  I'm not sure how much of it is 
  471. free, but it certainly sounds very minimally composed.

  582. what's up with all this Prince worshipping!? I saw him a few years ago, and 
  583. it was one of the dullest concerts I ever went to. they went on stage 4-5 
  584. hours late and played bad, BAD funk. like in "really really bad". and in my 
  585. opinion, htere is nothing worse than bad funk.

  587. just go to Arto Lindsay and that should make you happy for a long time. that 
  588. guy is GREAT, also live!

  590. I should perhaps mention, that I think almost all prince records are quite 
  591. bad, especially the newer ones. "Get Off" is one of my favorite songs.
