  110. All the tango stuff is old originals. Frith is mainly playing ambient-like 
  111. atmosphere stuff. Pretty nice, especially his bass playing. Unfortunately, 
  112. he let the director whisper over some of it which is horrible. Still a nice 
  113. disc all in all (if you like tango!), but I would recommend Friths new solo 
  114. guitar disc soon released on Tzadik instead.

  116. The movie itself, is very very bad. Sorry to say this, but I really hated 
  117. it. One of the worst things I have seen since... hm, forever perhaps. Did 
  118. anybody enjoy this?

  142. I've seen the movie. It's by a British director Sally Potter, who 
  143. also directed Orlando (for which Fred Frith also wrote some music). 
  144. The movie is about a director (played by Potter) who's having trouble 
  145. getting a film made, so she starts taking tango lessons, eventually 
  146. getting involved with her teacher. If that sounds sappy, the movie is 
  147. more complex than that, with some odd stylistic turns, conscious use 
  148. of the limits of untrained actors, etc.
  149.  
  150. There ARE a lot of real tangos in the movie, but the (mostly 
  151. background) music created specifically for the film is largely by 
  152. Frith & recognizably so. At most though, there's probably less than 
  153. 20 minutes by Frith. The tangos used in the film seem to be a pretty 
  154. good representation of old work with some Piazzolla (played by Yo-Yo 
  155. Ma) as well. I can't imagine that the soundtrack would be an 
  156. indispensable Frith disc for anyone other than the most rabid 
  157. fanatic, but (after seeing the movie and not having heard the CD) it 
  158. could be a good compilation overall. The movie was pretty good, but 
  159. maybe not something I'd take a train to Baltimore to see again.
  160.  
  161. If I lived in DC, I would take a train to see Cecil Taylor play, even 
  162. though I've seen him perform about 20  times. I probably WOULDN'T 
  163. have gone to hear him talk, but I was at University of Wisconsin when 
  164. he taught there, so I've heard him expound plenty.  (I'd love to read 
  165. more writing by him on music, etc, but that's a very different 
  166. prospect.)

  168. I'm with Brian on the variety of Brotzmann's music, his solo stuff 
  169. has depth and range that much of the group music doesn't. I still 
  170. listen to some of the trio with Bennink & Mangelsdorff (& should 
  171. probably get the CD reissue). On the other hand, I've only heard 
  172. Charles Gayle twice live, but from that and the CDs I've heard I 
  173. could never understand why people were so excited by him, compared to 
  174. similar work from the '60s by, say, Frank Lowe, etc. In fact, just 
  175. about the only time I've found Gayle tolerable is on the Cecil Taylor 
  176. CD, Always a Pleasure.

  361. To Rococo Rot are a pretty interesting band, somewhat reminiscent of Radian 
  362. or Pluramon if you've heard them. two bassists and a drummer, plus I-Sound on 
  363. electronics. I've seen them twice, in NYC and in London with DJ D, and 
  364. enjoyed myself both times.

  366. besides joining them on this tour, I-Sound is also on their entire new album, 
  367. which I haven't heard yet. unfortunately, since this tour was just moved up, 
  368. I-Sound had to cancel DJing my Tonic festival in a couple of weeks. oh, well.

  385. I'll confess to having a fair number of RW items, but they tend to get bad
  386. press because of the slick production values, so the more purist you are
  387. about world music, probably the less you'll like the RW releases.  Many of
  388. the releases seem to me to mine the same areas as some of the Laswell
  389. projects involving world musicians.
  390.  
  391. The ones I listen to the most are the compilations, such as Bliss and Plus
  392. from Us, or the ones which deliberately mix up players from different parts
  393. of the world, such as A Week in the Real World, Arcane, and Jam Nation.  I
  394. also listen to all of the Sheila Chandra releases regularly, especially
  395. ABoneCroneDrone (but then, I'm a big drone fan).  The Afro Celt Sound
  396. System releases are interesting blends of Celtic and African influences.
  397. Michael Brook has a couple of productions, Dream with U Srinivas and Night
  398. Song with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, which are good if you like Brook's ambient
  399. work.  I also like Ashkhabad, a well recorded album of a group from
  400. Turkmenistan which has some nice Gypsy overtones.

  450. Potter also had an earlier film, which was never distributed in the US, called
  451. _The Gold Diggers_, with a soundtrack (on LP) by Lindsey Cooper.

  453. Potter wrote and sings, and rather well I thought, on an album called _Oh
  454. Moscow_, released under Cooper's name; the rest of the band: Alfred 23 Harth,
  455. Hugh Hopper, Marilyn Mazur, Phil Minton, Elvira Plenar. Fine stuff, really.

  496. was more like 120 minutes late to do a poetry reading (with sax and drum
  497. accompaniment).  I left thinking "i'd stay if i knew he was a good poet."
  498. I would have waited for a master of his craft at work, but not an amateur,
  499. no matter what his credentials.  Has anyone ever seen this act?

  523. Cecil did a poetry evening earlier in the week, but I missed it. I
  524. rather like his spoken word album, "Chiampas" (sp?), which I actually
  525. listen to more than his piano work.

  584. for 'gilette' spots. Is this him? All that is sad, anyhow, but somehow
  585. it's better then doing what once great (in 70s crimson) bassist  &
  586. vocalist with a monster distorted bass sound John Wetton does now  -
  587. playing wildely unsuccesful and boring pop. But I'm not sure wheteher
  588. it's really better (any ideas as to what should a musicianm do if
  589. can't find any more inspiration?)
