  52. I like Wetton's more recent work a bit more than that, but yeah, it's
  53. somewhat uninspired compared to the Crimson work. (Though I also like
  54. his work with Asia a lot, in the poppier mode.) But the Crim Wetton is
  55. the bass player and singer I'd like to be when I grow up :-)

  58. quite hit the peaks that they did in the band when they played outside
  59. of it.

  82. Land Mail Order, available at www.nomansland-records.de . I'd recommend his
  83. albums with Ne Zhdali - some of the stuff might be available as mp3 on their
  84. site http://green.tpt.edu.ee/~nezhdali/nz_eng.html . You might also be
  85. interested in his solo albums - Much Ado About Burt Bacharach's Walk On By
  86. (Prospect Mira, Japan - www.win.ne.jp/~prospect , they also released Ne
  87. Zhdali Live in Tokio) and Surfing In My Bed (pure acoustic guitar noise :-).

  158. It's true for many 'prog/fusion' bands: look what happened to people
  159. form the late '70s guitar based Miles Davis Band: with the exception
  160. of  Al Foster, who is a great drummer maybe, but does not compose any
  161. great music AFAIK, the rest of the band had disappeared (ok, not true:
  162. dave liebman plays great stuff). Many fabulous musicians - such as
  163. Michael Henderson, one of the greatest ebassist IMO, is musically
  164. dead. Same goes for the the incredible guitarists: Cosey, Lucas, and
  165. Gaumont.

  232. I have listened to this disc a half dozen times since picking it up a couple 
  233. of days ago, which is very unusual for me, I seldom listen to a new CD more 
  234. than once or twice before filing it away. Yes, I do suffer from that dreaded 
  235. collector's disease, I have way too much music and not enough time to 
  236. listen; whatever happened to those adolescent days when I could play one 
  237. 45rpm single over and over for days on end! Anyways, this is certainly 
  238. Zorn's best collection of chamber music, and the stand out track for me here 
  239. is 'Untitled' the Erik Friedlander solo (cello) performance. His playing is 
  240. a never ending source of wonder. Which is not to detract from the other 
  241. pieces, the piano violin duo 'Le Momo' dedicated to Artaud and the trio 
  242. 'Amour Fou' are both equally engaging. Stephen Drury on piano and Jennifer 
  243. Choi on violin also deliver strong performances. Zorn's compositions now 
  244. seem to be more open, leaving space, letting the notes breathe as it were, 
  245. and there is a balance between his usual playfulness and the more 'serious' 
  246. composed nature of this music. Recommended for multiple listenings!

  324. with abuncha exceptions.
  325. I delight in "Always a Pleasure" and it's the least "serious" disc CT's 
  326. done; in fact, it's a happy disc, yet still deep and rich.
  327. I just bought the recent Cadence with the Gayle interview.
  328. Gayle says he played not what Cecil asked but what he wanted,
  329. and that was okay with both, it seems.
  330. It's worth reading for what you can hear of Gayle between the lines,
  331. as well as his manner of talking.  I think it's most informative.
  332. As well as what was skirted about and never said about why "people
  333. get angry" about what he says.  he talked about his talking abt anti-abortion,
  334. and said that "well if im wrong so is the bible"  but they did never get 
  335. around to clarifying his purported (i still wanna, like others have also
  336. mentioned here, see actual text of what he's purported to have said
  337. denouncing non-missionary sexuality).  i wonder if that was edited out
  338. of the interview or they just skipped around the question, though it
  339. permeated the interview.   next, i read the following issue with its 
  340. fred hersch interview.   light and air, detoxification, and lest one forget,
  341. he plays with heavies: hemingway, moore, et al., and always has.

  361. I am lucky to live in berlin, where leonid lives, and sometimes plays live.

  363. same as Ne Zhdali.

  384. cecil's poetry is an amalgam of all that is cecil.
  385. there are brilliant spots and connections.
  386. his weakness is that, like baraka, he way too often
  387. (perhaps every other line) relies on the easy wordplay
  388. and stream-of-wordplay connections that show less depth
  389. than a clever show-off of his (truly) encyclopedic knowledge of
  390. the universe.  i enjoy it, but do have these reservations
  391. about its quality.  
  392. perhaps try his disc (leo records) chinampas for a sense
  393. of what his poetry is like.

  556.     Hmmm... I've read it has a teen and lately and... still like it.
  557. Don't remember of Human Condition (certainly held in my hands but i think
  558. i didn't read it). On "La voie royale" i like the connection between
  559. erotism and asia and the heavy descriptions on the jungle and the
  560. bass-reliefs. 
  561.     nabokov reminds me of reading "Despair" which was one of his most
  562. amusing books and none of my friends liked it. on the other way, nabokov
  563. is said to had said something of his process of "conradization" (man, this
  564. word is boggus) about his process of writing/speaking english. which sends
  565. me blazing up river to Kurtz and... from there to the south seas and again
  566. to Indochina and... oh, well, who has been smoking pot in this room?!
  567.

  601. Even better, she also sings on the fantastic RAGS by Lindsay Cooper (which is 
  602. also the music for Sally's movie HOUSE OF THE SHIRT (right title?)).

  604. Back to the TANGO LESSON. The duo piano-clarinet is astounding. Krakauer has 
  605. such control of the intrument that it is almost frightening. It is so good that
  606. it appears a few times in the movie.

  608. Is it so bad? I don't think so. You have to remember that the movie was done as
  609. a challenge. She did not know anything about tango before the idea of the movie
  610. came. It was her intent in throwing herself totally in this movie, by almost 
  611. doing everything. The result might not be to the level of the concept and
  612. effort than went in, but knowing that helps to appreciate the movie.

  614. As well as we appreciate some music more in the strength of the rethoric and 
  615. concept behind, maybe we could do the same with movies :-).

  617. But I agree that it is not a great movie. But it has some merits and I admire
  618. her for taking the challenge (almost tempted to make the comparison with
  619. Michel Leiris' essay DE LA LITTERATURE CONSIDEREE COMME UNE TAUROMACHIE, 
  620. where he asked the novelist to take risks).
