I find it a dandy reference book -- I use it sort of as a sessionography.
Although it's not complete, it does, for instance, help you sort out what
those familiar bits are in his live recordings of the 1970s.... Lots of
good description about each recording and the circumstances surrounding
them. So, like when you're digging into one album (or one box), it can act
as a supplement to any liner notes....
I rather enjoyed the autobiography. Very readable, reasonably honest --
and, at moments, revealing just how thoroughly Miles loved music....

As a player, Blake is all over the last three Ben Allison CDs, all of which
you'll enjoy if you like 'Drift.' They are, in order, 'Medicine Wheel,'
'Third Eye' and 'Riding the Nuclear Tiger.' They're all on the Palmetto
label.
As a composer, don't miss Blake's outstanding previous release, 'Kingdom of
Champa,' a rather incredible travelogue of time spent in Vietnam. The band
there includes Steven Bernstein, Thomas Chapin, Marcus Rojas, David Tronzo,
Rufus Cappadocia, Bryan Carrott, Tony Scherr, Billy Martin and Scott
Neumann - yup, that's all of Spanish Fly, or three-quarters of Slow Poke, or
half of Sex Mob, plus one third of MMW... One of my personal "unknown"
treasures of contemporary jazz, and even better than 'Drift.' It's on
Intuition, like 'Drift.' So's the Slow Poke album, but I never got that one
so I can't comment on it.
Blake recently premiered another large scale suite of works at the Knitting
Factory, which should see release (given past experience) in three years or
so. Someone needs to get this guy on a quicker-acting label!

Over Easter weekend British TV Channel 4 showed a two hour documentary on
Miles.
Quite alot was, as expected, rehashed old interviews but there was some
great new stuff.
Included were two good examples of the Miles cussedness.
He proudly related how awkward he could be adding his mother told his first
wife he was a "mean guy".
And Dave Liebman told the story of how, after an ear splitting gig with
multiple drummers, two guitars and Miles on organ, he asked Miles: "Why have
a saxophone in the band?"
"The people like to see your fingers move fast."
Gee thanks Miles.
On another note. Where are all these amazing concert videos stashed. There
was excellent film of the Bitches Brew band live together with 1972 - 75
concert footage. The 80s stuff is better known. All of it looked
professional. I only get to see the little clips with voice overs ruining
them. Have the complete tapes ever been published?

Hi Matt,
Further to Ken's info, RenΘ Lussier is also part of the Fred Frith Guitar
Quartet, an amazing group with three records to date (at least that i know):
Quartets (recrec, 94), Ayaya Moses (Ambiances MagnΘtiques, 97) and a live
recording I neither own nor know the title of.
Lussier has worked with Ikue Mori, John Zorn, Heiner Goebbels and Hans
Reichel and, of course, Fred Frith among many others. He appears in Frith's
score for "Step Across The Border".
Hope it helps

EfrΘn

Hi David!
Could you please give more details on "Le tour"? I was
really intrigued by this record but someone bought it
just a couple of days before I got decided. It's a
hard one to find here in Spain.
Thanks in advance.

Recorded in Vancouver in February 1995 with the NOW [New Orchestra Workshop]
Orchestra, for this recording a 14 piece group including Paul Plimley (p),
Peggy Lee (cello), Coat Cook, Bruce Freedman, Graham Ord, and Saul Berson
(saxes), Relph Eppel (trombone), John Korsrud (trumpet), Ron Samworth (g),
Paul Blaney and Clyde Reed (b), Dylan Van Der Schyff and Pierre Tanguay (d),
and Kate Hammett-Vaughan (voice).
(NOW is a great outfit - check out also their recording of Study - Witch Gong
Game 11/10 with Barry Guy [Maya], and their recording of Shadowgraph 4 with
George Lewis [on Endless Shout, Tzadik], as well as their workshop stuff on
9 Winds and Spool.)
Lussier plays guitar and daxaphone as well as conducting, and composed all
the music specifically for the orchestra. I'm not any good at describing
music. The liners talk of "Lussier's incorporation of diverse sources, rock
rhythms to jazz parodies, free improv to pastoral ballad," and that seems a
pretty fair characterization of what you find here. But well-integrated,
with alot of attention to detail and to the orchestra's strengths. Very nice
work, if you can get it.
> It's a hard one to find here in Spain.
Surely Victo, which keeps its entire catalog in stock, has a European
distributor. Soebody has their website URL handy, please post it; otherwise

"It's rumored that "Alienation" (ed. note: a YBO2 record) shocked
Sonic Youth and Steve Albini." - Masashi Kitamura of YBO2,
interviewed by Jordan Mamone for the New York Press, Feb. 2000
DON'T miss the *first* American appearances by YBO2 (pronounced
"eeboh-eeboh"), the reunited, ultraheavy, Japanese-underground supergroup
from the '80s. Led by the philosophical bassist Masashi Kitamura, and
starring guitarist Michio Kurihara (of the original YBO2 lineup - and also
known for his great work with GHOST and DAMON & NAOMI!), this
great band has spawned players who have founded such Tokyo-based
iconoclasts as the above-mentioned Ghost, the Ruins, Zeni Geva, White
Heaven, A.N.P., ZOA, Canis Lupus, Difference, and numerous others.
After a decade of nonexistence, YBO2 has awakened to brutalize & intrigue
the world with its noisy, neo-progressive, psychedelic monster rock.
Throughout 2000 and 2001, the quartet's multi-hour gigs in its homeland have
been deafening, wild and totally unpredictable, with such guests as Masami
Akita (Merzbow) & Maso Yamazaki (Masonna) joining in the Hawkwind-like
onstage melee. Two limited-edition live CDs ("Heaven" and "Songs from
Higurashi Woods") recently appeared on FSS Records, an imprint of the
esteemed psych label PSF. A studio effort will eventually follow. YBO2
attempted to tour the USA last summer, but were forced to cancel due to
technicalities beyond their control.
The current ~2001~ "reunited" touring incarnation of YBO2 features:
* Michio Kurihara....
....on guitar (the psychedelic master and original founding guitarist of
YBO, who played with them in 1984 and 1985; he's known for his
subsequent work with Ghost, White Heaven, and Damon & Naomi)
He is nowadays considered one of the best guitarists playing
psychedelic rock in Japan. Back during those days when YBO2
"formed," Michio Kurihara and the first drummer, Yoshiki Uenoyama,
also played with a band called "ONNA" ("woman"), led by Miyanishi
Keizo, a very artistic underground comic writer. His music was very
much influenced by Hadaka no Rallizes (a legendary heavy-
psych-rock band active since the 60's).
* Masashi Kitamura....
....on bass and vocal (the band's founder and leader, onetime boss
of Trans, Chaos, and SSE Records, which issued the first Ruins,
Boredoms and Merzbow discs)
* Seiichiro Morikawa....
....on guitar, synth and vocal (leader of the great Japanese cult band
ZOA; he served as YBO's guitarist back in 1986 on a single and the
Kingdom of Familydream LP, ironically as KK Null's replacement)
* M. Kishizawa....
....on drums (also played in Kitamura's post-YBO group Differance)
* Co-headlining with YBO2 are the equally legendary and mysterious
