Yes, 'Spillane' and 'Godard' were performed live onstage in their entirety
during the September 1993 Zorn 40th birthday month at the old Knit. The
pieces came off without a hitch, with the exception of one moment in which a
sampler (I forget if it was David Weinstein's or David Shea's) failed to
function. The music came to a brief complete halt, during which Zorn
pointed at the offender and encouraged the audience to applaud.

You mean that those pieces were played live?!

What a pleasant CD this is... Especially Ribot's playing... and track 6! Dave Douglas is in rare form... Just outstanding stuff... Overall I find the CD quite listener friendly... Some of the songs are a bit predictable, but that really doesn't take away from the musician's performances and certainly not the integrity of the "mood." Those who fancy the Circle Maker/Filmwoks series will fall for this album...

oddly enough, the 2 are closely related. around about 1990 i asked zorn if
he had any music for piano, and he pulled out the early game piece
Sebastopol, for 3 trios: jazz, noise/rock, and classical (harp, oboe,
piano). one feature of the piece is a group of "ringers" - written out
fragments for the instruments, including one 2-minute ringer for piano solo.
the name "Dead Ringer" came a little later (think Jeremy Irons and
Cronenberg). i started programming it just before Carny for solo piano was
written. it's been recorded under the title "XIV" by Tomoko Mukaiyama on a
dutch label (BHVaast?)
