Get the Chicago Octet/Tentet. It's essential, and I find it an easier go
than the others.

I would consider the various incarnations of the Brotz' Chicago Tentets to=
=20
be essential: the limited edition three disc set and Stone/water, both on=20
OkkaDisk. These are the perfect counter to any unwashed's comments that he=
=20
can only shreek and skronk: all of his power is there, but in a framework=20
that is stimulating, diverse, and simply wonderful. Catching the Chicago=20
Tentet+2-1 (William Parker couldn't make the gig) in Atlanta last year was=
=20
truly a high point.
Brotz & Hamid Drake will be in Atlanta in April (with Evan Parker [solo] in=
=20
Atlanta and Birmingham [!]): it will be another experience to remember.
Hope this helps.

Bobby Previte's two CD's with Latin for Travelers are really quite good... Jamie Saft on keys, Marc Ducret on guitar (a fabulous guitarist, by the way)... My issue is I can't get any of the stuff on Napster... Like Zony Mash, Pigpen... Why are these bands not on Napster? Do they just not sell so many albums? I like to hear this stuff at work too, you know... (just a little Friday complaining, for no good reason)

That will actually be Parker's second Bham appearance. He was there with
the trio sometime in the mid-80s as part of a series that Davey Williams
and LaDonna Smith used to host.

Subject: Nipples
Okay, based on recommendations from this list I bought "Nipples" last month.
I've listened to it a few times, find it very dense, extremely challenging,
and a bit confusing. I "sense" a greatness there, but I can't pinpoint what
or why. If nothing else, it scares my co-workers. Can anyone out there
enlighten me about "Nipples" and Brotzmann in general? As usual, I feel like
Phil Spector: "I've been listening to a lot of Andrew Lloyd Webber lately,
and enjoying it. Someday I hope to set his stuff to music."

Yes, of course; but apparently he learned enough
useful math to credit his teachers, i.e. in SPILLANE
notes. He studied with Ken Stalling (not to be
confused with Carl) at Webster College in St. Louis,
though he was not there very long. He credits endless
hours hunched over pitch class sets (I exaggerate
here, no doubt) with learning a sense of, er,
discipline and economy.
