Subject: Wall to Wall Miles Davis
Hi List:
Just wanted to make sure that everyone knew about this HUGE event in New
York City next Saturday the 24th, and for once, those out of town will at
least get to hear the music if they're so inclined, via the magic of the
web.
Once a year, Symphony Space puts on a special presentation called "Wall to
Wall (X)," where X stands for some major artist alnog the lines of Cole
Porter, Kurt Weill, etc., etc. They use it both as a celebration of a major
artist and a way to get lots and lots of people to come check out their nice
space. It runs from 12 noon to 12 midnight and it's completely free of
charge, which usually means long lines outside.
This year is a tribute to Miles Davis, and I just recently got the complete
schedule. I'd tell folks to e-mail me privately for the schedule, but like
I said before, this year you can hear the show no matter where you are. The
entire event will be broadcast on WBGO-FM, which webcasts at www.wbgo.org.
So just remember that it's on from noon to midnight in New York on Saturday,
March 24, and then adjust accordingly. Therefore, here's what you can
expect, with the major items of interest to the Z-list in ALL CAPS, though
of course jazz fans in particular will see even more over which to
salivate...

To hell with New Age. However, it just doesn't matter who you listen to or
whose
words you read. You will NEVER know ANYTHING about spirituality without
actually
trying to engage in some sort of spiritual practise.
You can spend a lifetime reading New Age books or listening to Dalajlama
but you will not even get close. Which means you will not have any grounds
to base your judgment as to which reality is more mysterious or fascinating.

We're thinking about going to Chicago for the Empty Bottle Festival next
month and were wondering about whether we need to get tickets in advance.
Brotzmann's playing Friday night, the Die like a Dog quartet with Fred
Anderson instead of Kondo. I haven't been to the Empty Bottle before, so I
don't know how big it is, but I'm curious if this show is likely to sell
out.

I personally nevered worried for the month of March... Even the ECM March
releases are interesting:
- - Mat Maneri solo "trinity"
- - Marilyn Crispell/Gary Peacock/Paul Motian "Amaryllis"...
BTW, Is "Sankte Gerold" by Paul Bley/Barre Phillips/Evan Parker available
in the US yet ?
If it is, don't wait, order your copy now!!!!!
I can't imagine anyone not to find it pure magic.... but I suppose it has
alredy been discussed on the list (I've been out of office for a while)...

You might want to try to contact Karl Berger, whom Don Cherry dubbed
"the pianist of the Ornette Coleman lineage." Karl and Ornette were
cofounders of the Creative Music Foundation, which spawned the Creative
Music Studio in Woodstock, New York. Karl's email address is

Forgive me for digressing from the current religion/science discussion, but
Amazon.com just sent me the following Dave Douglas announcement:
"Flights of Fancy" is the sequel to Lovano's bristling "Trio Fascination,
Edition One" and includes several trio configurations. Lovano indulges his
swinging, bop-tinged approach with bassist Cameron Brown and drummer Idris
Muhammad on the title track, and he then moves on to work diaphanously with
harmonica pioneer Toots Thielmans and pianist Kenny Werner in one trio and
the bewitching duo of trumpeter Dave Douglas and bassist Mark Dresser in
another. In yet another guise, Lovano invokes Ornette Coleman's bluesy kick
with drummer Joey Baron and underrated saxophonist Billy Drewes. Included
here is a gorgeously patient reading of John Coltrane's cornerstone piece,
"Giant Steps."
