Speaking of Xenakis, I feel like I'm missing something when I listen to the
instrumental pieces in comparison to the electronic ones (Persepolis,
Legende d'Eer, and the INA-GRM-EMF collection). I've got two recordings of
Kraanerg, one of the Asphodel St-X collections, and some old vinyl, and all
it communicates to me is how his terrifying vision can't be expressed by
mere humans. What Xenakis recordings do you recommend to show me what I'm
missing?

Hello Patrice,
Danny Zamir "Satlah", Tzadik TZ7139, 2000
Zorn is on 2, 5 and 11 tracks, although it is not indicated. (There is
only a statement that he is a special guest on alto saxophone and also
that horn arrangements of these tracks are by Danny Zamir).
These tacks are:
2. Poem 17
5. Hasar Hamemuneh (traditional Yemenite)
11. The Theme and the Poem 15
BTW, the new Satlah CD will be released soon, Zorn is not playing
there although.

You should try to put your hand on:
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** - EONTA: Iannis Xenakis
1/ Eonta (1963-1964) (Xenakis) 19:40
1a/ part 1
1b/ part 2
2/ Metastasis (1953-1954) (Xenakis) 8:55
3/ Pithoprakta (1955-1956) (Xenakis) 9:45
Recorded in Paris in 1965
Konstantin Simonovic (1): conductor; Maurice Le Roux (2,3): conductor.
???? - Le Chant Du Monde (France), LDC 278 368 (CD)
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or the even easier to get:
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** - ORCHESTRAL WORKS & CHAMBER MUSIC: Iannis Xenakis
1/ Ata (1987) (Xenakis) 14:47
2/ N'Shima (1975) (Xenakis) 16:33

4/ Ioolkos (1996) (Xenakis) 6:51
5/ Charisma (1971) (Xenakis) 4:31

Micheal Gielen; Hans Rosbaud; Siegfried Palm; etc.
2000 - Col Legno (Germany), collage 04/WWE 1CD 20504 (CD)
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For a reason that I don't understand yet, recent recordings (read: in the past
10 years) have failed to move me the way these old ones did.
There seem to be a (positive) buzz on:

but I will wait a little bit to see if the infatuation survives a couple

If this is set I'm thinking of, it only includes one
or two string quartets as such, then over a disc of
material from members of the Arditti Quartet and
pianist Claude Helffer, in a number of configurations;
I particularly love the pieces for cello solo, NOMOS
ALPHA comes to mind. Is there any electronic music by
Xenakis in print, outside the EMF reissue, LA
LEGENDE... (which seems to be o.o.p. again),
PERSEPOLIS, and KRAANERG (only partially electronic)?
A few cursory searches haven't yielded anything.

Hi,
Does anyone (Steve Smith?) know about or has anyone heard the Josh Roseman
disc "Cherry" mentioned on the Enja website. Koch has a habit of waiting a
long time to release things in the US after their announcement on the Enja
website that they link to, which is a bit irritating. It looks like fun, a
sort of Lester Bowie Brass fantasy / funky hybrid. Lester plays on it too,
which has to be a plus, also Bob Stewart. Anyone know if and when it is due
in the US?
Thanks,
Rob

don't know if it's in print, but there's a CD on Neuma (450-86) which
contains Gendy3 (1991) and Taurhiphanie (1987-88), which are both "for
computer-generated sound."

Hi Piotr!,
I┤m also sorry if this topic has been previously
discussed but I guess that costumers could be
complaining for hours about this particular CD.
I can┤t figure out why Zorn has released this
- -specially if we take into account how well everything
by the Tzadik label has been recorded AND HOW
QUICKLY!.
Here in Spain, some friends thought that the Taipei
concert might have something special (location or
whatever) for Zorn and that┤s why the album came up. I
hope they┤re wrong since I┤m sure that lots of
recordings like that may be in a drawer ready for the
market!.

Why, gosh, yes. It's due for release this spring here in the States - most
likely April at this point, pending their settling on a marketing and
promotion scheme. Josh wants to do remixes for clubs, something Koch isn't
used to, so it's baby steps right this minute as they get their plan of attack
together.
The disc is a ton of fun, with a lot of great covers - "Don't Be Cruel,"
"Kashmir," "Smells Like Teen Spirit," a couple of Sun Ra tunes, Bacharach,
some originals. Not unlike Sex Mob or Brass Fantasy, actually. I've had a
demo for a little over a year, since it was originally recorded for Blue Note,
who turned it down for no good reason. In addition to Lester Bowie and Bob
Stewart, it features Joey Baron, John Medeski, Ben Monder, Dave Fiuczynski and
many more.
I'll let you know when I hear a firm release date. In the mean time, see also
http://www.joshroseman.com.

some orchestral pieces of incredible strenght and a couple of tours de forc=

for solo instruments (cello and TROMBONE):
_phlegra / jalons / keren / nomos alpha / thallein_
ensemble intercontemporain
boulez / tabachnik / strauch / sluchin
erato 2292-45770-2
also:
as other zornlisters have pointed out, _iannis xenakis 1: chamber music 195=

this cd has some of the oldest and the newest orchestral pieces:
_orchestral works and chamber music_: Iannis Xenakis
Col Legno 20504
_pl=E9iades_ for percussion esemble with _le six percussions de strasbourg_
or with the _kroumata percussion ensemble_, i like both versions.
it is interesting that you feel that his "his terrifying vision can't be
expressed by mere humans", i understand what you say, but for me there are
several pieces that make me feel the contrary, for example _thalle=EFn_ (the
version on erato is, imho, more powerful than the one on neuma), also _a=EFs_=
,
for amplified baritone, solo percussionist and large orchestra, on neuma.
good luck!
p.s. there are several of his later pieces that were much more intuitive an=

sounded like... let's go for a clich=E9: medieval music on acid, they are
great, for example, one for saxophone quartet and another for chorus a

Nice to see some updates on Bobby Previte's web site:
www.bobbyprevite.com

It's been a while since I've released anything new, but a number of things are
coming out.
First of all Jamie Saft and I have been recording a plethora of new music,
under the name "Swami Lateplate."
One record, Canto 1, is available at this site, and the next two, Canto's 2
and 3, are almost finished. These are very different from anything I've ever
been involved in.
Bump the Renaissance will record a CD of all new music in June 2001 for a
November release
The Miles Davis Bitches Brew band, formerly "The Horse", is now the "Voodoo
Orchestra"
This band will be releasing a 5 CD box set, one CD at a time, very soon.
Stay tuned for label info.
Depth of Field, my label, will also release three new CD's:
"Threshold"--a remastered Cd of some of my early music, from 1985
+
A live concert CD of Wayne Horvitz, myself, Elliott Sharp and John Zorn
+
A Live CD, recorded in Europe, of the Bump the Renaissance band.
