PAKISTANI POMADE is a great record, but I tend to prefer unreleased material
over reissues (with the exception of very bad unreleased ones, which is not
the case of HUNTING THE SNAKE).

Talking about Cuypers, I would have prefered BILLY MOUNCE (sp?), but HEAVY
DAYS is quite an enjoyable one (at least for a fan of the Dutch scene).

I don't know about it being lightweight or not, but I liked the Leo Cuypers
CD a lot. That is my favorite one that I have heard so far in the series. I
also liked joe mcphee's nation time, and thought the schlippenbach 4tet CD
was pretty cool, at least parts of it (esp. the third track).
since they are so centered around Chicago-related stuff, it would be great
if they could reissue something like Air's "Air Lore," but then I guess that
wouldn't be "unheard" (plus the rights would probably be impossible to get).
anyway, i am glad to see i am not alone in not getting much out of the
nachtulft cd, though.

Well, count me among the select few who enjoy both Nachtluft and the
Cuypers disc (though I have the latter on the original vinyl). Couldn't
really argue with the term "lightweight" on the Cuypers, but in a way,
that's what his music is about: simple, breezy and fun. Haven't heard
enough of the other Atavistic things to comment.

This set is: Xenakis Chamber Music 1955-1990; the pieces are:
tetras (string quartet), mists (solo piano), kottos (solo cello), herma
(solo piano), embellie (solo viola), a r. (solo piano), mikka /mikka "S"
(solo violin), akea (piano & string quintet), dikhthas (violin & piano),
tetora (string quartet), nomos alpha (solo cello), ikhoor (string trio),
evryali (solo piano), st/4 (string quartet). All the pieces were composed by
Xenakis, Claude Helffer piano, Arditti String Quartet are the performers.
Highly recommended! And easily available 2 CD set for a reasonable price, I
paid about $17 for it...also I fail to grasp the problem some are having
with Masada Live In Taipei, sure the sound is not perfect, but the
performance certainly makes up for its very minor audio shortcomings. Maybe
that's why Zorn put it out! This discussion reminds me of a time I met
someone checking out some high end audio equipment, using the Gary Moore
'Blues For Greeny' CD tribute to Peter (Fleetwood Mac) Green). I asked if he
had ever heard the original versions, he said oh yeah, but he much preferred
the Gary Moore takes, because the sound quality was so much better...
Peace Out!

I never said I had a problem with the sound quality of that recording.
I only wanted to find out if JZ had had any particular reason (apart from
the quality of the performance,
which - believe it or not - I also appreciate) to publish it.
This was so interesting to me partly because those "minor audio
shortcomings" are not so minor in my view.

It was originally released on Inner City in 1978, simply titled
"Revolutionary Ensemble". Recorded live in Austria August 18, 1977.

sorry to beat a dead horse, but the Taipei concerts are by far the most wild
and inspired I've ever heard Dave Douglas or Joey Baron. the sound is not the
point. listen to the playing.... everything stops & starts on a dime, and
track 2 of disc 20 alone is worth at least $50 from my wallet.... you guys
really prefer the studio albums to that? wow... I think Dave hasn't really
been 'playing' in that band since 1999. there are some exceptions but, after
seeing that band maybe 30 times (no joke), that's my view....
IMO, Masada will never sound like it did for me at Tonic, Jan 23, 1999.
Cheers,

That came out on A&M/Horizon as part of a short-lived series of
relatively well produced albums that included nice bios, scores, etc. RE
was the most "avant garde" of the roster, which also had Jim Hall, Thad
Lewis, Dave Liebman/Richie Bierach. imho, it's the best thing RE ever
put to wax, coming the closest to their live shows. Jenkins playing on
'New York' is extraordinary and Cooper's composition, 'Ponderous
Planets' is a long-time fave.
The Charlie Haden duos that I _think_ were also part of this series have
been issued to disc, but I'm not sure about any of the others, including
'People's Republic'.

There are several directions that you can head into at this point,
depending on what you like about the above artists. Every single person
who is into this stuff can offer several suggestions. Here are mine.
Quickly.
I think if you like the creepier, darker sounds, definitely check out
Aube, rhBand, Organum & Pelt. If you like abstract, but lighter sounds,
perhaps Flying Saucer Attack (the Tele-funken collab is quite good),
Microstoria, Oval or the abstract beat laden Autechre, who I've just
heard for the first time yesterday. Almost on the poppy side is Windy &
Carl, who have a new LP coming out in a couple of months, but you can get
the thick masterpiece "Depths" right now. Fuxa's "Accretion" and
Flowchart's "Tenjira" are both worthy of your time as well, but are more
pop than "ambient."
But hell, this ain't even the tip of the ice burg. Try joining the
droneon list <subscribe-droneon@lists.no-fi.com> (I think... a quick
search with your search engine for "DroneOn list" should yield results)
as they have more suggestions for this type of thing than any other place
I could possibly think of. But be prepared, there were close to 20 posts
yesterday berating a frustrated boob who wanted to unsub, but couldn't
figure it out... fun moments to be had for sure, if you don't mind wading
through several posts.
Lot's of off topic stuff, but more drone/ambience info than you could
hope for.
Cheers,
ChuckP.
