Nothing on any official release to date.  Sorry, I wasn't thinking about that when I listed them.  Sylvie periodically brings this lineup into Tonic, and also toured Europe (Amsterdam, Lausanne, Eindhoven, etc.) with the quartet last November.  Hopefully she'll bring this group into a studio at some point. They really oughta be heard.

  108. this is one of my favorite records, and have been hungering
  109. and begging for a reissue forever.  i have the promo-only single LP
  110. of the 5 Lp box which i never difd get to buy.  i heard it performed live, 
  111. somewhere below houston street,
  112. and was bewitched.  kotik told the audience that it's long
  113. (it's long and it's minimalist for sure)
  114. and that it would be fine to go out and come back or
  115. go to the rear and nap anytime and that would be fine.
  116. i did and it was.

  118. kotik leads the s.e.m. ensemble that for decades has done yeoman work
  119. performing then-rare works by cage, wolff, et alia.  i believe
  120. they have discs on mode.  i havent kept track of recent events
  121. but they frquently perform and often in brooklyn heights.

  140. Funny how there doesn't seem to be much middle ground on 'Iffy'.  Should I
  141. preface this response by revealing I'm in the "very enthusiastic" camp
  142. about that record?  Maybe.  In any case, I would describe Yeah No, at
  143. least as with regards to the last two records, as a super-melodic groove
  144. band from the planet Mars.  That seem really at their best, in my opinion,
  145. not when they're probing downtown-y moments of collective improv (which is
  146. cool, don't get me wrong), but when Skuli and Jim are just barreling along
  147. like a freight train and Chris and Cuong are tearing the place apart.  And
  148. I think the compositions are in fact really good - neat melodies,
  149. interesting juxtapositions of musical ideas (one of the tracks on the new
  150. one drops a Balkan theme on top of a Haitian groove to extremely cool
  151. effect).  I'm undecided on which of the latter two ('Deviantics' and
  152. 'Emit') I dig more but have found both of them very rewarding.

  156. Amazing.  I don't even know where to begin.  As I've probably said on
  157. this list before, 'Speak To It' is one of less than 10 records that really
  158. blew open my ears apart in terms of how composition and improvisation can
  159. really complement each other in a very powerful way.  Which makes no
  160. sense.  Shit.  And Andrew D'Angelo is a fantastic composer.  On one hand
  161. it gets me kind of down that he didn't take Dave Douglas' "How To Be An
  162. Indie-Jazz Rock Star" seminar with Speed and Black but on the other hand
  163. it's nice to know he's off doing his own thing as opposed to hauling his
  164. horn all over the damn world playing other people's charts.  Now if only
  165. he would start putting out some records...

  208. Go and see him! He was in Poland 2 months back, one of the best shows I saw
  209. for long time. Amazing improviser, superb technique. I thought I know
  210. something about sax (I know Zorn, right), but after his show I realized,
  211. this instrument has lots more potenatial, and Butcher knows how to use it.
  212. Very peronal music, very original, deep listening.

  313. I don't know a lot of Dave Liebman outside of his work with Miles.  But
  314. I'll say this: his new Enja disc 'time immemorial' is a trip.  I gather
  315. it's a followup to an earlier solo release, 'The Loneliness of the Long
  316. Distance Runner.'  This, too, is solo sax with manipulation and effects
  317. by Walter Quintus.  It's not like Evan Parker's manipulated solo
  318. releases, though.  It's more cinematic, I'd say.  Liebman plays soprano,
  319. alto, tenor, baritone, flute, and dida.

  337. improvisers, very oddly edited to stop and start in mid-performance
  338. GIG - the best of the bunch, an intimate pub date with John Stevens.

  340. All are pretty low-fi and somewhat home videoish, but they're all
  341. recommendable for what's on them.  My first copy of 'Gig' didn't play at
  342. all, but a replacement worked fine.  I've not seen the new Milo Fine
  343. video.

  373. Finally saw this last Saturday and was surprised to see the music credited
  374. to Penderecki.  Actually about half or a bit more is electronic music
  375. credited to somebody else; early blip style but used quite effectively.
  376. Penderecki seems to have contributed the orchestral parts which is 18th
  377. century pastiche (except for what's lifted entire from Beethoven and I
  378. think Mozart).

  439. contains music of that type, so if you're one that enjoys theme development, 
  440. you're going to be unhappy with the box and should probably stick to 
  441. _Astigmatic_ (the live and studio versions) and the live stuff concerts.  
  442. There's also a 25-CD box set coming out in March that will contain 
  443. *everything* plus a 250-page biography and discography.  Of course they 
  444. announce this after I've picked up about half of the catalogue...:(

  530. I'm sure that most of you are pretty used to attending
  531. concerts like the one I had the chance to witness
  532. yesterday evening in Barcelona.
  533.  
  534. I had previously seen Marc Ribot with his Cubanos
  535. Postizos here and my opinion was thoroughly positive.
  536. I didn't know though what I was to see yesterday. 
  537. In actual fact, I didn't know what to expect from a
  538. Ribot's solo performance and it turned to be one of my
  539. most beautiful experiences ever.
  540.  
  541. As happened last Friday with the Eskelin trio, the
  542. concert was moved to a big room in Barcelona called
  543. "La Paloma" which is usually a dance-floor for the
  544. elderly (tangos, pasodobles, maybe a little salsa, you
  545. know) and the building was absolutely amazing, sort of
  546. an opera house (balcony included). At first I thought
  547. that this might be too big a space for a solo
  548. performance but the truth is it couldn't have been
  549. better.
  550.  
  551. Ribot began with a couple of slow pieces, really cold.
  552. He didn't seem to be eager to please the audience.
  553. Right after, everyone understood why there were little
  554. baloons on the floor. He performed a noisy
  555. improvisation for GUITAR, BALOONS and ALL THE GADGETS
  556. ONE MAN CAN USE. It was actually really hard for me to
  557. identify the covers that came after. 
  558. After a 20-minute pause (added to a 40-minute delay;
  559. 11.20 p.m) Ribot explained what was supposed to be the
  560. second part of the show, mostly based on Zorn's "The
  561. Book of Heads". I was thankful to see the more edgy
  562. side of is playing. By the faces of the people not
  563. everyone agreed. There was a composition dedicated to
  564. the late Brother Jack McDuff and another one to "the
  565. people without papers" (!!).
  566.  
  567. I find it hard to describe what I heard or saw, 
  568. specially in a language that is not mine, but yes,
  569. there was noise, free improvisation, bluesy soloing,
  570. jazzy deconstructed tunes and Ribot's weird balladry
  571. (check these lyrics: "I walked by your house/you threw
  572. a lemon at me/and the juice came down to my heart).
  573.  
  574. I never had doubts of Ribot being a genius with a
  575. language of his own, but he made sure to remind us in
  576. the best possible evening a fan can enjoy.

  598. Magus. One of the best records ever made. Incredible. If you don't have it
  599. just go and buy it.

  613. I enjoyed reading Liebman's (slim,
  614. concise)autobiography, which discussed his experiences
  615. taking part in the NYC loft scene (well, one
  616. particular loft scene, at least) in the 1970s, getting
  617. his "breaks" with Elvin Jones and Miles Davis, etc
  618. etc.  It's been several years, and unfortunately I
  619. have lost the book; my memories are of a humble,
  620. contemplative survey of one musician's own career,
  621. with much more time given to ruminations on being a
  622. musician, and on descriptions of a scene, than on
  623. anything else.  Eloquent.  I also highly recommend his
  624. DEVELOPING A PERSONAL SAXOPHONE SOUND book for any
  625. less experienced saxophonists on the list, maybe for
