  44. Apart from what I was able to hear live, I had the
  45. opportunity to hear "The Secret Museum" briefly and it
  46. promises to be their best album to date. It seems more
  47. complex than their past works, which I must admit I
  48. didn't like very much (on CD, of course) but this one
  49. seems to BE THE ONE.

  68. I don't know if you heard Tim Berne's Bloodcount. If
  69. you haven't, I can assure it is a must. Although it is
  70. a quartet one might think that there is an entire
  71. crowd there when it comes to collective improv. 
  72.  
  73. Did you hear Wadada Leo Smith's Golden Quartet on
  74. Tzadik? It was one of 2000's best albums in my
  75. opinion.
  76.  
  77. Michael Formanek (also from Bloodcount) has a good
  78. quartet too. They released several CDs on Enja. One I
  79. specially dig is "Nature of the Beast".
  80.  
  81. Are you also looking for trios? Satoko Fujii's one of
  82. my favs (w/ Mark Dresser and Jim Black) and as someone
  83. else said Dave Douglas' Tiny Bell Trio is highly
  84. recommended. 
  85. Did you hear the Relativity album on Enja? (Marty
  86. Ehrlich, Michael Formanek and Peter Erskine). It's
  87. really good although the last section of the album
  88. goes down a little bit.

  147. I'll second everyone below, especially Bloodcount.  Also, the Matthew Shipp=20
  148. Quartet's "New Orbit" has been on repeat cycle in my disc player for the las=
  149. t=20
  150. week or so.  A gorgeous disc.  It is piano-based, though, and a bit subtler=20
  151. than most Masada stuff.  Bloodcount, on the other hand, is aggressive and=20
  152. wonderfully chaotic.=20

  208. Someone recommended Chris Speed's Quartet Yeah No.
  209. Could anyone try to describe what they do? I was
  210. actually MORE THAN DISSAPOINTED with his trio CD
  211. "Iffy" on Knitting Factory Works.I didn't like the
  212. compositions, nor the interplay between the
  213. performers. I found the latter really surprising since
  214. I had been expecting Saft in varied contexts too long.
  215. The same happened to me with his "Sovlanut". I was
  216. pretty surprised when seeing his record among some
  217. 2000 Top Lists.
  218.  
  219. What about Human Feel? I've recenly heard some
  220. Rosenwinkel's work and found it really nice. If we're
  221. adding Jim Black and Andrew D'Angelo the thing is
  222. promising.
  223. Obviously I have a very positive opinion on Speed's
  224. playing but when it comes to composition...

  279. sold it anyway. But in PACHORA, man, he is so good. About YEAH NO, the new
  280. one EMIT is really good, much more melody than the previous one. Try it,

  316. I haven┤t heard this CD but there is an upcoming Quartet CD scheduled for 
  317. spring 2001 with Gratkowski, Wolter Wierbos, Dieter Manderscheid and Gerry 
  318. Hemingway. I┤ve heard a cdr in advance and it┤s a very promising band. A 
  319. tour is planned this fall. The sound recalls in places the fantastic Anthony 
  320. Braxton Quartet with George Lewis or Ray Anderson some years ago.

  322. A solo CD of Gratkowski is scheduled for fall 2001.

  343. I was the one who mentioned Yeah No. I'm with you on the composition thing,
  344. but it seems like he's just churning out too much for it all to be quality
  345. really, doesn't it? I like his Pachora stuff the best, for the most part he
  346. manages to avoid repetition there. The Yeah No compositions are more hit and
  347. miss, some are great, some need work, some meander a bit too much... When I
  348. mentioned Yeah No I was certainly talking less about his compositions and
  349. more about the way the band works (I've only heard Emit so far by the way),
  350. particularly some of those crazy rhythmic effects of Jim Black (like playing
  351. almost in time, stuff like that)...

  383. as a composer?  I see that the Dog With a Bone label
  384. (same label that produced the Marcel Duchamp CD and

  386. GUSTON) has reissued a 3CD of Kotick's MANY MANY
  387. WOMEN.  It was described as an "underground classic"
  388. (uh oh) and it's a setting of a Gertrude Stein novella
  389. (yes!).  Has anyone heard this, and what do you think?

  509. To wade into heavy waters here, I'd suggest the disc
  510. is more "No" than "Yeah". I've been impressed with
  511. Chris' playing as a sideman, but IMHO he doesn't seem
  512. to (yet) have the skills to be a fully interesting
  513. leader. But, of course, everyone is expected to lead
  514. his or her own session these days and most give in to
  515. the pressure to do so.

  517. (Except that is for Daniel Carter, who told me the
  518. other week he'd rather be a good musician and sideman
  519. than have a CD out under his name).

  646.  Wynton Marsalis: I'll tell you what Skunkbucket LeFunke sounded like.

  648.  He had this big rippling sound, and he always phrased off the beat, and he
  649. slurred his notes.  And when the Creole bands were still playing
  650.  De-bah-de-bah-ta-da-tah, he was already playing
  651.  Bo-dap-da-lete-do-do-do-bah!  He was just like gumbo, ahead of his time.

  653.  Announcer: LeFunke was a cornet player, gambler, card shark, pool hustler,
  654. pimp, male prostitute, Kelly Girl, computer programmer, brain surgeon and
  655. he invented the internet.

  657.  Stanley Crouch: When people listened to Skunkbucket LeFunke, they heard
  658. Do-do-dee-bwap-da-dee-dee-de-da-da-doop-doop-dap.  And they knew even then
  659. how deeply profound that was.

  661.  Announcer: It didn't take LeFunke long to advance the art of jazz past its
  662. humble beginnings in New Orleans whoredom with the addition of a bold and
  663. sassy beat.

  665.  Wynton: Let me tell you about the Big Four.  Before the Big Four, jazz
  666. drumming sounded like BOOM-chick-BOOM-chick-BOOM-chick.  But now they had
  667. the Big Four, which was so powerful some said it felt like a Six.  A few
  668. visiting musicians even swore they were in an Eight.

  670.  Stanley: It was smooth and responsive, and there was no knocking and
  671. pinging, even on 87 octane.
