  48. For early stuff go with "sanctified dreams" on Koch (joey baron, herb
  49. robertson - trumpet, cellist whose name I can't remember but is also on the
  50. frisell album "where in the world" playing a jazz-o-phone fiddle).  This is
  51. a good intro and in a certain way I find it similar to "where in the world"
  52. (which remains next to "live" as my fav frisell material)  
  53.  
  54. I'd also recommend checking out his Bloodcount quartet stuff on screwgun
  55. especially the unwound set (3cd) if you can find the cash.  Jim Black, Chris
  56. Speed, Michael Formaneck and Tim Berne.
  57.  
  58. The Ducret trio album on screwgun "l'ombra di verdi" (what does that mean
  59. anyway?) is also worth mentioning.  I can't remember the names of the
  60. drummer and bassist though....just go to www.screwgunrecords.com if you're
  61. interested.

  183. on first play that I'm in love:  on Random Acoustics it's called
  184. "Battuto" by Corbett, Mats Gustafsson, Terri Kapsalis on violin
  185. (a new name to me) and the always wondrous Fred Lonberg-Holm
  186. on cello.  Corbett plays guitar, btw.  Now I'm curious about this 
  187. "hat" disc.  I assume it's not on hatHut, eh?  just sick about...

  237. Terri Kapsalis is John's girlfriend or maybe wife - they weren't married back
  238. when I was regularly in touch with John about five years ago, but maybe they
  239. are now.  Anyway, she's a fine violinist and she also recites some wonderfully
  240. droll and strange self-penned stories and dada verse on the album 'Van's Peppy
  241. Syncopators' (with Corbett and Hal Rammel, on Ramell's Penumbra label) in a
  242. sort of Laurie Anderson unplugged stylee.

  349. A person who abandons a taste for classical music in favor of pop may be
  350. suffering from dementia. This does not mean, as parents have been wont to
  351. allege, that a liking for pop music implies brain dysfunction.
  352. A team of Italian researchers reported that two patients with
  353. fronto-temporal
  354. dementia suddenly changed lifelong listening habits. Their study was
  355. reported in
  356. the most recent issue of the journal Neurology.
  357. One patient, a 68-year-old lawyer developing progressive apathy, loss of
  358. inhibition, judgment, speaking and thinking skills, began to listen to
  359. Italian
  360. pop music at full volume about two years after his diagnosis. Before his
  361. illness, he was a classical-music listener who referred to pop as "mere
  362. noise."
  363. A second patient, a 73-year-old woman who seldom listened to music, suddenly
  364. developed a taste for pop tunes supplied by her 11-year-old granddaughter.
  365. Team leader Giovanni Frisoni suggested that changes of taste may have
  366. occurred
  367. because the patients' right frontal lobe, which manages novelty, may have
  368. assumed predominance, or because damage to the brain's frontal and temporal
  369. lobes may have changed the perception of pitch, timbre and rhythm. Frisoni
  370. added, however, that the study was not meant to imply pop-music listeners

  573. Boyd Rice was, among other things, the guy behind the '80s noise-industrial
  574. project NON. Like a whole lot of the chuckleheads in the noise scene, Rice
  575. rounded out his public image with assorted fascist regalia, his
  576. associations with characters like Anton LaVey (the Church of Satan guy),
  577. and other wholesome behaviour.
  578.   Unfortunately, it was a lot of this "stunted-growth, adolescent"
  579. silliness that gave shape to a lot of what is currently obnoxious about so
  580. much of the North American and European noise scene, and it really doesn't
  581. give you much of an idea of what Rice and others (like Michael Moynihan

  618. Okay, speaking of Bowie... as it happens, I spent my holidays in
  619. suburban New Jersey, and as a result spent more than the usual amount of
  620. time listening to pop radio in a car while in transit from place to
  621. place.  And oddly enough, I heard quite a bit of Bowie, which made me
  622. nostalgic.

  624. I've skipped the last four Bowie albums (everything post-Tin Machine,
  625. frankly), but Ben's reminder has me curious.  What does anyone/everyone
  626. think of the recent Bowie/Eno collaboration 'Outside'?  And, while we're
  627. at it, if anyone has opinions on 'Earthling' and 'Hours,' I'd be game to
  628. hear those, as well.
