  46. on Ingestre St.  This is the home to SoulJazz Records and is a really great
  47. shop.  Surprisingly I was dissapointed by the price and selection at the
  48. famous Rays Jazz...

  73. I've only been to London once, so I'm certainly no expert, but easily my 
  74. favorite record store there was These, at 112 Brook Drive. it's in a working 
  75. class neigbourhood, all apartment buildings, and the only way you know that 
  76. you're even at the right address is a thin strip of paper next to a buzzer, 
  77. which reads "THESE" as if it was written in a mirror. very narrow range of 
  78. music, but way better prices than anyplace else in town that I went. the 
  79. Tower there seemed to stock a fair bit of experimental music also, in its own 
  80. section even, next to jazz.

  176. Agreed. I think that the staff there are less clued up with stuff that is
  177. (musically) post-1977 than they could be. The Ronnie Scott and Georgie Fame
  178. pictures on the wall say it all. Mind you, there is a picture of a young
  179. Derek Bailey up there... and it's not bad for second hand vinyl. I picked up
  180. the Willner Monk tribute there not long ago. You just have to be lucky.

  192. stores (but mainly the Covent Garden one), and Selectadisc, in Soho's

  208. inventory.
  209. For instance Tower's in downtown Toronto has had a
  210. copy of Cecil Taylor's Always A Pleasure (AAP)
  211. mispriced at $57(!) for the past two or three years.
  212. Even at inflated import prices it should be about $30
  213. tops. I once pointed out the discrepancy to the Jazz
  214. manager at Tower's who agreed with me, but looked in
  215. his computer saw AAP listed at $57 and said nothing
  216. could be done about it.

  218. (BTW I already owned AAP at that time -- bought for
  219. $26 through Verge, it's now cheaper -- and just
  220. figured someone else might enjoy the disc if he or she
  221. could afford it).

  327. I saw Wednesday's 2 sets.  I thought they were great.  It was my first time
  328. seeing frisell, and I was expecting mellower stuff given recent records I'd
  329. heard.  I was pleasantly suprised by the nice mixture of his newer
  330. "Americana" sound with some strange effects.  Not the older style volume
  331. swells (he didn't have that peddle), rather delay and almost synth sounding
  332. stuff on 2 tunes.
  333.  
  334. The music had a nice open feel, much of it courtesy of the rhythm section.
  335. They were very tastey.  I'm always a sucker for Kenny W's drums, and it was
  336. nice to see him playing more sparsely.  One of his tricks is stuffing a
  337. shaker into his hi-hat foot and keeping time with it, very nice.
  338.  
  339. As Steve Smith mentioned, there were covers of Mancini (Days of Wine and
  340. Roses), and Marvin Gaye.  There were also some acoustic tunes with Frisell
  341. and Scherer on acoustic guitar with Wollesen playing solely on the snare
  342. with brushes (country style).  Frisell mentioned one of them was a Leadbelly
  343. cover.

  361. The set I heard last night included "Moon River," "What's Going On," a
  362. gorgeous "Shenandoah" with a chorus effect I've never heard Frisell use
  363. before (like a ghostly high voice slightly out of sync with his main
  364. voicing), and a couple of old-timey country folk tunes, in addition to a
  365. handful of originals from recent albums.
  366.  
  367. Scherr stuck to acoustic bass, doubling on acoustic slide guitar for the
  368. folk tunes, and Frisell played acoustic on these as well.  One of them
  369. was a Dock Boggs tune, my friend informed me, and the other might as well
  370. have been.  Definitely Harry Smith territory.  The guitars were
  371. unamplified, making everyone listen really closely.
  372.  
  373. Wollesen was in the pocket all night.  It's not the same feel that Baron
  374. brought to Frisell's music, but it surprises me just how well Kenny fits
  375. in.  A ricky-ticky little choo-choo train rhythm on one of the folk tunes
  376. brought a smile to my face (even though I couldn't help hearing David St.
  377. Hubbins and Nigel Tufnel singing "All the Way Home" in my head - call it
  378. a sickness...).
  379.  
  380. In general there was an electronically wacked out segue between most
  381. tunes - some of the out-est stuff I've heard from Frisell in years.  And
  382. his playing in general is definitely more bluesy than in the past.  But
  383. boy can he write a beguiling little tune...
  384.  
  385. I suppose I'm coming to terms with his "new direction," but it's good to
  386. go back and listen to Power Tools every now and then, just the same.
  387. Hey, during the Robert Fripp soundscapes set I heard earlier in the
  388. evening, I wished a bit for the old-timey twin Revox analog sound of
  389. Frippertronics as well.  But then, I've got those records, too.

  507. Wow, thanks for forwarding this blurb.  This band is playing live at Tonic the
  508. very same night, at 10 p.m.  The 8 p.m. show is Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Tom
  509. Rainey with special guest Melvin Gibbs, but until now I hadn't planned to stay
  510. for Greg's set.  That description just made my mind up.  Looks like it's going
  511. to be a long night.

  525. The main thing that I'm confused about the chain stores is that they have
  526. irregular stocking practices.  Sometimes there will be no records by a given
  527. artist, but then a single random disk will appear.  A store that had Naked
  528. City once all of the sudden had a copy of the re-release of The Big Gundown.
  529. It makes no sense.

  532. called "Jacques or Obedience."  I would like to know if any one has insight

  611. opinion?  i have heard 1930... and i love it but i think oersted is better.

  613. i've never heard rainbow electronics, though.  i hear that one is really

  615. couple others that i liked but did not compare at all to oersted or 1930.
