  76. Check out Alasnoaxis, Jim's freshly released debut recording as a leader
  77. on Winter&Winter.  The disc is all over the place, genre-wise, but there
  78. are some portions that rock as hard as anything I'd care to listen to 
  79. (though Steve "Morbid Cannibal Angel Corpse" Smith might say differently
  80. of course).

  215. I went to a concert of the Dillinger Escape Plan last weekend, and I 
  216. think they would be a nice substitute for the 'downtown metal all-
  217. stars. I have never witnessed a concert that was as intense and at 
  218. the same time musically amazing as what I witnessed there. More 
  219. metal than Prelapse, more jazz than metalbands like Cannibal Corpse 
  220. or Morbid Angel. Although I don't know why I make these 
  221. comparisons, because DES absolutely stands on it's own. The only 
  222. thing I can come up with is a musical thunderstorm that lasts 45 
  223. minutes and leaves you grasping for breath. Check these guys out, 
  224. because they will definitely change your ideas about extreme music..

  277. This was only my second time seeing Black (saw him with Uri Caine's Mahler 
  278. ensemble a few months ago).  He was much more impressive this time.  What a 
  279. great show.  I'd actually never heard Eskelin before, but was really 
  280. impressed with his intensity and style.

  282. I was also pleased that the show sold out, particularly after being disgusted 
  283. that I was one of only two people to show up on Friday to see Hamiet Bluiett.

  303. particular) with a lot of heavy funk in between.  One of my favorite albums 
  304. of the year.  Vandermark is really onto something.

  421. 'straightforward' readings, but the link of pretty much the whole album to 
  422. the Goldberg Variations conceptually is tenuous at best, I'd say.  Not to 
  423. mention the fact that he does not even touch some the variations, and most of 
  424. those that were 'inspired' actually seem to have nothing whatsoever linked to 
  425. the Goldberg; they actually seem more an attempt to show how 'broad-minded' 
  426. and 'versatile' he is, and they even fail at doing that.

  516. I'm usually a list lurker, a passive beneficiary of your knowledgeable
  517. discussions. But now the opportunity to play Mr. Caine's apologist has
  518. finally seduced me into posting. In full disclosure I should probably
  519. mention that I've reviewed Caine's Variations for publication a couple
  520. times.
  521.  
  522. What it is: The original Goldberg Variations is a solo piano piece based on
  523. a catchy 32-bar aria and composed of thirty inventive treatments of that
  524. theme. Employing BachÆs own musical methods, Caine selected some of the
  525. original thirty variations and interspersed them with over thirty more of
  526. his own fabrication.

  528. The way I hear it: Caine found sure footing in BachÆs theme and variations
  529. model, which is not such a far cry from a jazz chartÆs format. CaineÆs
  530. variations, no matter how far-flung, are almost always within reach of BachÆ
  531. s original 32-bar harmonyùbut as a jazz musician Caine is accustomed to
  532. improvising over a headÆs succession of prescribed chords. So the 32-bar
  533. harmony is the link to the original. If Caine's dizzying genre shifts can
  534. obscure this basic underlying pattern, repeated listenings might reveal how
  535. Caine keeps his stylistic peculiarities under formal control.
  536.  
  537. Caine does sometimes seem to expect his listeners to be musicologists: some
  538. knowledge of the source compositionùand of BachÆs entire oeuvreùis almost
  539. requisite for really meaningful listening.  I didn't get it until I'd
  540. listened to Caine's variations while I followed along with Bach's score. But
  541. Caine told me he hoped you might enjoy the parodies of Rachmaninoff and
  542. Mozart Variations as individual tunes, even if you don't know what's being
  543. sent up, or how those Variations conform to Bach's harmonic structure.  No
  544. matter how you hear the recording, I don't think there's anything
  545. embarrassing about any one of the variations; he pulls off all styles pretty
  546. capably. But maybe Matt means that Caine's display of his own broad
  547. stylistic conversance amounts to a kind of embarrassment of riches?
  548.  
  549. Finally, mercenary motives would have necessarily figured into this
  550. project's recording, and its release during a Big Bach anniversary year is
  551. no coincidence. But that's as much Stefan Winter's business as it is
  552. Caine's. And the performing choirs on tour are typically local pick-up
  553. groups.

  605. That was extremely well-said.  Matt in the past has expressed displeasure 
  606. about Uri's discs, a few bordering on attacks on his (Uri's) integrity.  At 
  607. most, I think Uri should probably have indicated what the more far-flung 
  608. ideas were based on.  It would have stopped a lot of people from saying he 
  609. wrote stuff that had no connection to Bach.

  627. Taylor and Tony Oxley in this week's Village Voice; she was at the same set as
  628. me, Ken and Jon and was the journalist I mentioned who laughed out loud with me
