  130. my...whatever, anyway, I think L'Aventura is an
  131. amazing fuckin film--it may be boring in the
  132. conventional sense (but Mozart is boring in the
  133. conventional sense), but it takes titanic amounts of
  134. courage, insight, and subtlety to make a film like
  135. that, regardles off where its brow is
  136.  
  137. and, btw, I think Leone movies are great--but, in a
  138. point made by...I forgot and already deleted the
  139. mail...but in a point made by a fellow lister, pop
  140. standards, if you will, are different today than they
  141. were in the sixties+/-, and Leone films surpass nearly
  142. any western made recently, pop or fop
  143.

  171. Yeah that's it.  I had some sort of bruschetta thing I
  172. think, and listened to a Jomes Blood Ulmer CD and also
  173. some King Tubby dub thing, neither of which I bought
  174. but only because I didn't have much cash then- like
  175. now.  Now that I think about it, I really should have
  176. bought the King Tubby CD despite- that was pretty
  177. cool.  Anybody know this guy?  Blind Idiot God's dub
  178. stuff seems highly informed by him.  I do know that
  179. he's dead unfortunately.

Hmmm, interesting.  I'm a friend of Jamie, the drummer from Rake, and he had mentioned that they play with a cellist recently (we live about 3000 miles apart, so I haven't seen them play).   Did you happen to see the "Rakestar Arkestra" gig (Rake's CD release party), where a bunch of Ottawa musicians did Sun Ra material?  Was Molnar part of it? It sounded like quite a show.  Supposedly it was videotaped, and there will be a copy on the way to me as soon as someone finds the original!!

  265. I didn't see the Rakestar thing, but my sister did. She said that Mark 
  266. Molnar did in fact play cello as part of the band. She sent me a review of 
  267. the show a few months back. I can't find it (i think i deleted it), but she 
  268. said that he was added unearthly sounds to the horns, except for two solos 
  269. that he took which were (in her words) "overwhelming". If there's a video 
  270. tape, I'd love to see it.

  588. here, but pop(ular) music is designed, performed, and
  589. packaged to appeal to the largest amount of people and
  590. sell the largest number of units...while that does
  591. take a certain amount of skill (not that much), it's
  592. more about advertising, trend-mongering, and the cult
  593. of personality than musicianship.
  594. so, maybe when we talk about pop drummers as geniuses,
  595. we should really be talking about their agents or
  596. their label's advertising executives--those are the
  597. real geniuses of the radio-friendly commodity game

  601. I agree in the sense that I find the Beatles overrated... they could
  602. have used editing, yes, but still, I think some of their works are
  603. just downright genius. I repeat. SOME. Like "Tomorrow Never Knows",
  604. which was probably the first techno song since it was constructed
  605. over a tape loop, sound fx, blah.
