straight-ahead intelligent punk, provided you're an anarchist or anarchist-

well, I'm not much of an Ex fan anymore, but Joggers and Smoggers is from
1989, and they've put out quite a few since. the names of the Cora
collaborations, which are the best things I've ever heard by them, are And
The Weathermen Shrug Their Shoulders and Scrabbling At The Lock.

As far as drummers as leaders, why haven't I heard mention of Brian Blade yet on the list? Although I think he's more into making a statement as a composer, I thought Perceptual with the Brian Blade Fellowship was an extremely beautiful album. Granted, he doesn't take a single solo, but his very melodic playing is intergral to the whole sound of the album.

Subject: Jones/Baker
Because of the dissent going on concerning Ginger Baker, I'd like to cite
some passages of an atricle in Mojo over a year old about a Ginger
Baker/Elvin Jones duel.
Ginger dueled Elivn 30 years ago at the Lyceum in London...
"'Improvisations' was the first number they played together, delivered
with a loud pushing beat...Ginger was loose in his manner; Elvin, intricate
and precise, played form the wrist; there was no wasted movement, an attitude
from which many rock drummers could learn.... It was clear they were enjoying
themselves: playing with each other, not at each other. It was an object
lesson in drumming versatility.
The two men chattered and thundered towards their climax, the crowd
joining in with a roar of solidarity that became part of the whole. Then it
was over.
A truce was proclaimed.
'It was a draw, Elvin, right' said Ginger. 'It had always been a draw, we
played together, we enjoyed each other, it wasn't a battle.' Elvin's reply:
'it was OK, really OK, and boy am I tired and hungry.'
