  51. was an awesome set, so heavy and loud that you could feel the breeze from the 
  52. bass coming from the speakers 15 feet away. very impressive.

  70. i think dan's list identifies a lacuna in music that's out there,
  71. particularly in recorded form.  knowing the playing of many of the sax and
  72. bass players he identifies, i myself would be quite excited to hear duos
  73. of the sorts he mentions.  it seems to me to be a lost art form...off the
  74. top of my head i can think of the two sam rivers/dave holland lps, and the
  75. dave holland/steve coleman disc.  of course, there are more, but wouldn't
  76. it be nice to hear more variety...?

  101. after seeing richard davis perform solo, i don't think he needs a sax
  102. player.....now theres an album - r.d. solo.....live at mr. p's..... in all
  103. seriousness, the most lyrical bass player i;ve ever heard... i've never
  104. found a recording that does justice to the solo 'all blues' i heard him
  105. perform....he managed to never loose track of the song, while
  106. simulatneously improvising the entire way...

  119. responded by saying, to paraphrase (i'm working off of digest with a 33.6
  120. connction) that it was georg's gig, and graewe sort of played right
  121. through without listening to anyone else.

  123. i get a similar feeling from graewe's playing on the reletively recent
  124. okkdisc graewe/parker release - graewe basically plays straight through,
  125. and parker does what he can over it.

  127. the dissapointment lies in the fact that graewe's duo album with frank
  128. kutowski (sp) (who plays tenor sax) is great, as is his work with the
  129. graewe / risinjer/ hemingway trio.  these works are, in my opinion,
  130. essential - as if schoenberg decided to play improvised music.  but i'm
  131. not sure what graewe has been up to since then.  dan and jon's comments
  132. seem to support my feeling, although, of course, i was not there...

  160. Last time Brotzmann played London the gig ended early with some anticlimax
  161. as the neighbours complained to the police about the noise. As the track
  162. "Massaker" was heading towards a head-pounding conclusion, Brotzmann was
  163. motioned to from the wings to stop immediately. He did, mumbled his
  164. apologies and left. All that tension and no release...that and the very
  165. sparse audience made me wonder when (or if) he'll come back.

  185. The ROVA and French show was pretty good.  I'm not
  186. enough in the know on either of them to give a good
  187. long and informed recount, but they did a couple of
  188. Beefheart tunes ("Steal Softly Through Snow" and
  189. another that I didn't recognize) that ended up
  190. sounding very prog-rockish through the arrangement to
  191. me, which was interesting and cool.  The improvised
  192. stuff was very hot in spots, but French kept the power
  193. on too much in some cases I think.  He didn't sound as
  194. comfortable when he did get quieter too.  When he was
  195. solo, he did some stuff like on his "O Solo Drumbo"
  196. Avant disc, and that was really amazing.  They all
  197. sounded good together though I thought.  I'd see more
  198. like that.

  220.  Godflesh, of course, never recorded with a live drummer except for
  221.  their 1996 album SONGS OF LOVE AND HATE, where the excellent Brain
  222.  was their drummer. All their other stuff was recorded using drum
  223.  machines. However, Ted Parsons (from Prong and The Swans) often
  224.  was their drummer in concert, and he might be on the upcoming
  225.  release US AND THEM IN DUB as well.

  407. I don't know if there are other collaborations between Han Bennink and
  408. members of the ex that I don't know about, but I was given a copy of
  409. Instant about 4-5  years ago when I was in the netherlands last.  It is
  410. not a standard album by the ex, but instead is just a collection of songs
  411. between various combinations of members of the ex and some Dutch instant
  412. musicians (Han Bennink, Ab Baars, Wolter Wierbos, Tristan Honsinger,
  413. Michael Vatcher, and Dolf).  One of my favorite songs on the album is
  414. actually just a duet of Ab and Han Bennink.  I don't think that the album
  415. comes off as much of a punk album, but a number of the songs definately
  416. have that kind of harder noisey edge to them.  There is only one song on
  417. the album that features only Terrie and Han Bennik, but they are on a
  418. number of songs with other musicians too.  Another one of my favorite
  419. songs on the album is the drum duet of Katrin and Han Bennik.  I think
  420. that this album might be a bit hard to find in the U.S.  I suppose that I
  421. have not really looked for it, but the last time I saw it here was at a
  422. show by the ex.

  477. there's a couple of discs--forgot the
  478. label--documenting West African drumming from Dagbon
  479. (okay, I think that's it--it's in storage), they were
  480. both recorded by the same guy...
  481. (in the liner notes he writes about hering the drums
  482. from villages miles away)
  483. This is probably too general to even bring up...
  484. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, and has the
  485. specific information, they should post it, because
  486. these discs are mindblowing! If you're interested in
  487. any type of tribal drumming at all, you need to hear
  488. these discs (whatever they are).

  547. Last night in Buffalo I saw Quagmire -- William
  548. Parker, Oliver Lake and Jin Hi Kim. Kim had both and
  549. acoustic and an "electric" komungo set up on stage,
  550. but never played the later because of technical
  551. problems, she finally explained. And the show went on
  552. quite well without it.

  555. flute, surved soprano and alto saxophones) and WP (on
  556. bass, wood flute, sintar, kalimba) anyways.

  616. recording by John Miller Chernoff issued on Rounder (5016), a very
  617. excellent album!

  666. the han and terre disc is a duo with the guitarist from the ex. (adorably, they
  667. seem to go by just first names within the band, but adopt the surname 'ex' on
  668. other projects, thus this is han bennink and terre ex). and if you don't know
  669. the ex, ryan, you should. great dutch punk band of 20 yrs or so. the han'n'terre
  670. is quite good, but better is a two cd set by the ex called 'instant
  671. compositions' (no doubt an homage to the icp) with folks like ab baars and,
  672. hell, i dunno who all. another more song-oriented collaboration is the 2cd
  673. 'joggers and smoggers', also with many of the dutch improvisin folks. they also
  674. recorded 2 great discs with tom cora, 'scabbling at the lock' and 'even the
  675. weatherman, uh, something...

  677. general rule for the ex is they just keep getting better. their early 80s stuff
  678. is kinda ruff. their most recent, joggers and smoggers, is great, smart,
  679. straight-ahead intelligent punk, provided you're an anarchist or anarchist-
  680. friendly.
