That doesn't change the nature of the performance. I don't think
it's important for me to know that and knowing that doesn't make the
performance better. Sorry to be harsh but that's how I feel. >>
well, of course it doesn't change the nature of the performance, it's merely
factual information as to why the performance may have seemed that way to
you. if you saw a guitarist play a set with two broken strings, would that be
relevant information when discussing the performance later on?

I didn't see it, but the LA Times review said the collaboration (for only a
few songs) didn't fly real well.

gosh kurt,
you reminded me of some of the greatest gigs ive ever seen in my life...
one with zerang at roulette with fred longberg holm
(first time i'd ever heard of them-
thanks always to jim staley's programming at roulette.org),
an amazing live set with the always amazing hemingway with electronics guy
thomas lehn at experimental intermedia (lemme plug their 2cd set on erstwhile
recpords which they recorded on their tour before i saw them and had to buy
this disc on the spot- hi jon)
and at the new museum (which used to present improv but no more concerts now)
a duet with previte and cyrille, my first experience with previte and man oh
man if anyone did something so evil as to boot a recording of that night i
will be yr slave...
oh yeah and the outdoors at lincoln crt thing i forgot who was the leader,
but cyrille
played a solo at least five minutes simply flexing a cymbal with
such....musicality, that the whole crowd was up on their feet roaring....
"give the drummer some!"

Subject: Graewe vs. Andriessen
I love most of what Ive heard of Graewe and never heard him live,
yet <sigh> one must make choices,
and I'd already committed to a pal to see Andriessen,
who was ill and did not make the flight for the preconcert talk.
I'd loved him at first ear, 20 yrs ago, then got bored,
and now again listened again to the 5 LPs i have on Donemus
which later became Composers Voice, or is that backwards.
Anyway, some of this stuff is great and some is trite.
Last night was a mixed bag, but the clear highlight was a world premiere,
a piece for chamber orch, electronic and film by
(the unknown to me) filmmaker Hal Harley
which was very very witty and enjoyable; that's too mild.
it was hysterical.
now if i ever stop reading these posts i can finish writing it up for

Tony Oxley - check his work with Anthony Braxton on "Seven Compositions
(Trio) 1989" on hat ART and with The Feel Trio (Cecil Taylor, William

Also Sunny Murray, Milford Graves & Rashied Ali.
For rock drumming - Bill Kreutzman of the Grateful Dead

Is this the one with Han and a guitar player? I saw
it once and thought it looked interesting, but didn't
know enough about the guitar guy to buy it. Seemed
like it might be aggressive and noisy, which would

Yes, I agree absolutely. And another that has slipped our obvious eyes is
Famoudou Don Moye, who has always impressed me when I've seen him live with
his agility and subtlety. I'll also heartily endorse Brian's earlier
suggestion of Samulnori and the Drums of Death CD.

Subject: new releases
Well I might have perhaps beaten NYC residents and bought a CD before they
did. Just got the new Marclay/Yoshihide collaboration "Moving Parts" and
have been enjoying it immensely. I think the most interesting tracks are at
the end of the CD, especially "Fanfare" and "Distant Trip" though another
track with old circa '30s jazz sampled in is quite nice as well. And I
believe I'm hearing a lawn mower revving up on one track as well. Only 10
tracks are listed but there's an eleventh which is only silence until the 15
minute mark, followed by a 53 second exchange that includes sampled opera.
I'm sure others will be much better than I at identifying all the samples
used. As for the description, I'll leave that for our maestro Steve Smith,
whom I have no pretense at exceeding.
I've liked Sussan Deyhim's collaborations with Laswell, particularly her
vocal track on Hashisheen, but I'd never gotten any of her recordings until
Madman of God and belatedly Majoun, with Richard Horowitz. Reggie Workman
and Raz Mesinai show up on the former, along with a host of other Middle
Eastern musicians of various origins. The melodies are based on the Sufi
poems of Rumi, Saadi, Djami, Hafez, and other writers from the 11th to the
19th centuries. Of the two, though, I think Majoun is the strongest; in
fact I'm sure it will be one of my favorites of the year, though as usual
I'm arriving three years late.
Other opinions welcome....

Subject: Re: drummers
Ahhh! i go away for a few days & find the zorn list in full swing (300
new messages to plow through) and a lenghty disccusion of drummers! Well,
because i play drums and i've always found drummer the most exciting part of
a band since i was a kid, i must put in my 2 cents!
I've noticed alot of the more obvious(and deserving!) choices mentioned
already; Tony Williams, Jim Black, RSJ, Sussie Ibarra....
I'd like to add:
Mick Harris(someone already mentioned him too i think)- Zorn really mannaged
to pull out a creative side of him in Painkiller that isn't that apparent to
me in the early Napalm Death & in Scorn albums(tho i like both of these). I
guess I am just a sucker for drumming that is both monumentally heavy and
also very fluid, changing, and Harris is not constantly hitting the
backbeat, also turning the beat around, doing things that sound really
complicated but are still 4/4....
Danny Arnold Lommen - The drummer for Caspar Brotzmann's Masaker group....
definitely someone I'd say fits into the heavy-yet-sensative to dynamics
group. I've heard a few cuts from Caspar's newest and am really missing the
old rythem section. Lommen's playing invites closer inspection, because
there are alot of minute details that i've only noticed when really
concentrating on the music.... someone mentioned Bozzio's 4 way
independance, but that often seems too flashy to me. Lommen throws in tiny
little accents that make me shake my head because he's kept the heavy main
rythem chugging the whole time. Plus, I can't help but admire his ability to
keep his place in those monolithic landscapes of sound Caspar calls "songs".
What i'd give to see that band live... *sigh*
Dale Crover(Melvins) - Hmmm, I am noticing a trend with all these guys being
on the heavier side of things, but i guess I'll let the free-jazz to be
discussed by those a little more versed in it... I saw the Melvins last
spring in Philly and am still blown away. Debated following them around
like Dead Heads used to for the GD(wonder what sort of nickname obssesive
Melvins fans would be called?). I can't sure if it was just the impression
left on me, or if the second set truely was just a 45 minute medley of their
material, with no breaks.... Dale is the only drummer I'd pay to see in a
thong either. hehe. But seriously, the things he does with time, and the
stamina he has leave me with my mouth hanging open... still trying to
determine what half the precussion sounds on the drum solo/closing song on
Bullhead are. damn.
Jeremiah Green(Modest Mouse) - Saw them this past Monday & it was a toss up
for that show or Jim Black's Alas no Axis, who I doubt will be in Philly
again any time soon either.. oh well. His style just rocks because it is
about the equivalent of Elvin Jones playing indie rock... sometimes tight &
punctuating and sometimes flowing, bordering on sloppy, filling up empty
holes in the beat with ghost notes & fills.... it seems like he tried to
fill up more space when MM were still playing as a trio live, and their
albums were less produced, but I will always enjoy the way he is willing to
play around with established parts, just enough to make it interesting to
hear the smae songs over & over again....
OK, I appologize for my long-windedness, lack of Zorn related content & my
creative attempts at spelling, but it's not often there is a chance for me
to rant to likeminded people without it seeming pretentious or whatnot, and
be able to describe things with more than just "yeah, he kicks ass at
drums!"...
Other awesome drummers(or bands with good drummers i can't recall the names
of right now): Sara Lund(Unwound), Jim White(Dirty Three), Shellac, Ted
Epstine(BIG, any other bands he's in?), God, Godflesh, nomeansno, Jeff
Sipe(love the albums with him & Hellborg)...
