Anybody know where I can pick up that Ornette Coleman soundtrack, The
Chappaqua Suite, which was mentioned here a few days ago? CDNow doesn't
list it. Don't have any of his stuff, and of the few posts about the disc,
it was said to be a good one.
Look at the eBay auction:

Hm, close! EXCEPT for those part with the, er, "beat". I mean, what was he
thinking?! The "Dance Mix" is just totally horrible, but also the other
parts where the beats show up are extremely weak and doesn't mix in with the
rest of the very atmosperic album, if you ask me.
The rest of the album, is brilliantly brilliant (as Zorn himself would
probably have said it). The "Main Theme" (I think it's called) is one of the
most beautiful melodies Zorn ever wrote. And having Ribot play it doesn't
hurt.

Absolutely, without a doubt, no question, you must own these.
And, though it's not my cup o' tea, you oughta get a Masada.
Other than that, it's up in the air, depending on what you like.

Subject: Zorn on Dutch television
This morning a friend of mine, who works for the Dutch television
broadcastingcompany VPRO, phoned me up to let me know Zorn
will be a quest in the program 'Reiziger in Muziek'.
The show is recorded live and will be broadcasted October 22nd,
11:00 in the morning. He's invited because the Den Haag based
Residentie Orkest is playing (new?) pieces by Zorn. I don't know if
these are worldpremieres (couldn't find anything on the
Orchestra's website). The fact that one of the premier orchestra's
of the Netherlands is playing Zorn though, is exciting news.

Yeah, that's a good book, at least content-wise. I was re-reading through it
last night, trying to find something about the Leo Cuypers CD they just
released on Atavistic (has anyone hear this? I know Aquarius was really big
on this, but they don't usually do that much with jazz). Whitehead's writing
style seems really mannered and is at times almost unbearable, but I guess
that's maybe just a personal thing on my part.
My main reason for writing is that I'm wondering if anyone has heard Piet
Nordijk (sp?), the alto player who I think they compared to being the 'Dutch
Charlie Parker' or something. And then they compared Zorn to him -- I think
that's where one of those "Dolphy third-hand" references comes in. Anyway,
are any of his recordings readily available, and if so, which would be a
good one to get?
Thanks in advance,
WY

For all the Vandermark-curious, this story ran in today's boston globe.
Blumenthal is on the money. I was glad I came out for this one.
MUSIC REVIEW
Vandermark 5 blows a set for anyone with
jazz ears
By Bob Blumenthal, Globe Correspondent, 9/27/2000
AMBRIDGE - A list of the bands that Chicago-based
reedman Ken
Vandermark has led or co-led in recent years could
easily fill this
space. He is clearly not afraid of eclecticism; and
while often working the
avant-garde end of the improvising spectrum, he is
also comfortable with
structured situations that border on the traditional.
One of his most active groups, the Vandermark 5,
visited on Monday at the
start of an East Coast tour, and displayed conviction
in a range of material.
The band delivered moments of collective cataclysm,
most insistently on an
opening piece dedicated to German saxophonist Peter
Brotzmann, but
rejected a monochromatic approach in favor of diverse
tempos, moods, and
textures. This was music for any open-minded jazz fan.
(The Middle East
Upstairs, however, is only for those who don't
consider chairs a necessary
amenity.)
The 5 showed the benefits of conceptual compatibility
and shared
experience, playing through transitions cleanly and
using moments of collage
to bridge individual solos. Bassist Kent Kessler and
drummer Tim Mulvenna
were boisterous or circumspect as the music demanded,
and sustained a
clear context beneath the horn solos. The pair shaped
their more clattering
outbusts in pendular arcs, while informing other
passages with a loose but
propulsive swing.
Dave Rempis, on alto and tenor saxes, was the 5's
primary fire-breather. He
built several solos around overblown phrases, yet also
featured a deep
sound steeped in passion. Jeb Bishop, who doubles on
guitar but confined
his playing to trombone, showed an even wider range.
His tone was fat and
on occasion rough, but Bishop always honored melodic
continuity. His solo
on a more straight-ahead piece like ''The Cooler''
contained the logic and
lyricism of a Bob Brookmeyer.
Vandermark blew tenor sax, clarinet, and bass clarinet
at various moments.
His bass clarinet solo on ''Fall to Grace'' was
outstanding, displaying a subtly
modulated sound and sense of construction that was far
from the mere aping
of Eric Dolphy often heard on the horn. Clearly more
focused on his role as
composer, and on his band, Vandermark did not solo on
two of the seven
pieces. This uncommon display of selflessness did not
remove his stamp
from the music, however, thanks to the quality of his
writing.
Like Anthony Braxton and Steve Lacy, Vandermark
dedicates each piece
to someone he admires. Two titles in the set honored
Boston musicians -
''Roulette,'' an almost funky theme in 9/4, was for
bassist Nate McBride,
while the straight-ahead ''The Cooler'' nodded to
pianist Pandelis
Karayorgis. There was also the quietly beautiful
''Late Night Wait Around''
for Dutch saxophonist Ab Baars with its heartfelt
Rempis solo, an edgy
''Ground'' for the band The Ex, and a ''Cover to
Cover'' for drummer Frank
Butler that generated a loose walk one might call
Mingusian.
This story ran on page D5 of the Boston Globe on
9/27/2000.

Subject: Marion Brown etc.
Hello,
...couldn't resist Marion Brown as the topic of my first post to
the Zorn list (have been lurking for about a month). Brown is one of my
favorite jazz players, and I'll second the recommendations for his ESP
Disks, especially the first, titled "The Marion Brown Quartet". I'll
also echo the praise for "Porto Novo" on Arista Freedom and "Three For
Shepp" on Impulse. Shepp doesn't play on this record, however, though he
is pictured on the cover with Brown. The personnel are-- Brown, alto-
Grachan Moncur III, trombone- Dave Burrell, piano- Stanley Cowell,
piano- Norris Jones aka Sirone, Bass- Bobby Capp, drums- Beaver Harris,
drums. Not a bad line up. I don't have any of Brown's work from the
'70's and forward. Recommendations?
...to answer Sigmund's question about Nov. voting, I must say
that I'll probably go with Nader and not ruin my track record of protest
voting. Any fans of New Zealand's Macgillicudy (sp) Serious Party on the
list?
...on the old thread of Big Books I'll mention and highly tout
"The Recognitions" by William Gaddis. A pure mindblower, easily the
equal to "Gravity's Rainbow", which I love as well.
...top ten Zorn? I'll throw "Spy vs. Spy" into the mix. It was
the first Zorn I ever heard, and still one of my faves. Actually, let me
correct. The first Zorn I ever heard was his guest playing on "Black
Girls" from "Hallowed Ground" by the Violent Femmes. The first Fred
Frith I heard was on the Femmes' "The Blind Leading the Naked". Crazy.
Until next time....
I remain....
