I suppose he has 'fame' as a bass clarinetist with Miles but I prefer
his tenor sax playing. There are precious few Maupin recordings that
fit my tastes (his works as a leader in the mid 70s aren't my cup of
tea).
I recommend Lee Morgan's "Live at the Lighthouse" set on Blue Note.
Great tenor playing from Maupin. There's also a bootleg Lee Morgan
recording with the same group at another venue that has, in my
opinion, better and more lively playing. Another one is Lee Morgan's
"Caramba" on Blue Note--a studio recording. There's another Lee
Morgan record with Maupin that I don't like so much, I can't remember
the name off hand.
I find him to take such a background role in the Miles
recordings...too bad. I also can't say that stuff with the
Headhunters really impresses me too much. Maybe it's him playing the
soprano sax I don't like.

i've also been thinking that i'd like to find a place to post reviews on the web

I saw Maupin on the re-united Headhunters tour last year, and he really
impressed me deeply. His playing was much better than anything I'd heard of
him either with Miles or the various Herbie Hancock bands. I'm not a huge
fan of the Headhunters stuff, preferring the earlier Mwandishi through
Sextant sextet, and went to the concert not expecting a lot (the
Headhunters re-union disc is pretty atrocious), but the concert really did
blow me away.
Maupin and Patrick Gleeson have a disc called "Driving While Black" from a
copuple of years ago. I had pretty high expectations for this, given that
Gleeson's contributions to Sextant were a very important early influence
for me. This disc is a French import, and it took ages for me to find a
copy. Ultimately, it's kinda disappointing, better than average electronic
fusion, but nothing revelatory.

I will put downtown music gallery link immediately when I start links
section. Their site is one the most important and useful place in the
net for me so I'll be glad to promote it as much as I can. I was even
thinking about asking Bruce to put his CD announces and reviews to

It sounds excellent! If you will start to send the reviews to me I
will put them on the web. In a little while I will organize on-line

The problem is that MP3 files are mostly illegal so I'm not going to
deal with them. Some artists allow making recordings of their concerts
though and trade them later. But there are good organized places like
Etree.Org for these things so I don't think we need to build something
new.
Although if you will do it somewhere else I can put a link from
Downtown Music web site.

Good review.
Just a nitpick: I don't think Maupin played with Miles (if he did, it wasn't
recorded). He did play with Lee Morgan, though. The "Live at the Lighthouse"
box set is quite a showcase for him. He was also in Herbie Hancock's incredible
"Mwandishi" band prior to Headhunters. What a band that was.

Regarding all this discussion about a website devoted to the music we listen

Some of you may know about the pfMENTUM Newsletter. Well, it has been
evolving into a new format with a new name, with very similar goals to the
one being discussed. From the home page or our new website,
NewCreativeMusic.com:
"This web site is dedicated to the furthering of New Creative Music, while
remembering and honoring its lineage.
More specifically, we are a forum to support, promote, and encourage
underrepresented forms of music such as creative improvised, creative
composed music, and electro-acoustic music.
We wish to provide an environment that will be an outlet and resource for
knowledgeable listeners, educational for new listeners, and provide
resources for artists."
We wish to accomplish this by:
1) Interviews and recording reviews posted by users and "staff."
2) Bibliography of books and magazines
3) User posted concert reviews
4) Discussion about the aesthetics of this music
5) Growing an excellent database of links about artists, venues, record
labels, et cetera.
It is just getting started. Any help with additional linkage, recommended
reading, et cetera would be helpful.

Peter,
I would like to answer your email with a couple of notes and ideas.
At the risk of sounding annoying, I might state the obvious, but I don't
think these issues have been mentioned at all, or really addressed, and I
think they should.
First of all, before you start such an ambitious web project, I feel you
should have a design for the pages.
Secondly, there seems to be no plan / flowchart for the website sections. I
understand the necessity to keep the structure open, but it is very vague
for now.
Thirdly, as has been pointed out there is a lack of a concept. The site
began as 'a project dedicated to the music we like for a long time'. The
shortcut from this to 'downtown music' is a bit short to me, like the only
music 'we' have been listening to is downtown music (from New York). Will
you limit the scope to music performed by New Yorkers?
A few questions and remarks: why do you have your name all over the pages?
What are the banner ads? (Do you plan to make money off this site?)
ASP hosting is not exactly cheap, and definitely not the most obvious
choice for such a project. Plus I hope / believe you are pulling content
from a database, which is not inexpensive either. (Do you plan to lose
money off this site?)

Having all that content up is a major work - not to mention the necessary
updates. Sounds to me like the project could be at least a full-time
occupation. (If I take your comments literally, how do you become the
website of musicians who are computer illiterate, or the website of labels
that are not online?)

Why not link to the zorn-list archives and make them searchable? It would
actually be really easy to do, with the complicity of M. Rizzi.
There are modules (like 'Wilma', and others) that work in conjunction with
majordomo to make the archives searchable. The only thing is that to my
knowledge they work in a unix environment (where everything is free), not
NT (like ASP) where everything is for pay...
Re: involving other people and existing projects, I have to say I thought
about DMG when I read your domain name (downtownmusic.net). It
occurred to me that you could donate that domain to Bruce of DMG and build
him a nicer website, an extension of what he has now. Did you talk to him?
Lastly, I think the discussion should happen off-list.
Thanks for listening.

What kind of design do you mean? Text based design which is used there
now is fast and easy to navigate. What else do you want to see?
BP> Secondly, there seems to be no plan / flowchart for the website sections. I
BP> understand the necessity to keep the structure open, but it is very vague

Again, what do you mean by that? You want to have lots of sections
with "under construction" statements? I don't think it is a good idea.

Surely not. I called it this way 'cause I'm living in New York and
many musicians are playing here in downtown.
BP> A few questions and remarks: why do you have your name all over the pages?
What do you mean? My name is on the first page under the short text
only. If you are talking about copyright statement then what should I
put there if I'm maintaining this web site? The texts which will
appear on the site will have their authors names.
BP> What are the banner ads?
Just some Russian banner exchange network. It was added to advertise
the site in Russian part of the net.
BP> (Do you plan to make money off this site?)
Are you serious? Do you really think that it is possible to make money
with such a project?
BP> ASP hosting is not exactly cheap, and definitely not the most obvious

Why are you so concern about money? I didn't ask to donate something
to it. What is your idea about "the most obvious choice"?
BP> Plus I hope / believe you are pulling content from a database,
BP> which is not inexpensive either.
Database is on the way. There is no any necessity to start it right
now though.
BP> (Do you plan to lose money off this site?)
Oh, money again... No comments.
BP> If I take your comments literally, how do you become the website
BP> of musicians who are computer illiterate, or the website of labels
BP> that are not online?
Did you hear anything about unofficial web sites or fan clubs?
That's the answer to this question.

BP> > interviews, making pictures and much more. What I want to do is to
BP> > collect this information in one place and let other people know what
BP> Why not link to the zorn-list archives and make them searchable?
Sounds good. Just do it if you know how.
What I meant though was to put only filtered information (reviews)
about albums and musicians and not the whole archive.
BP> Re: involving other people and existing projects, I have to say I thought
BP> about DMG when I read your domain name (downtownmusic.net). It
BP> occurred to me that you could donate that domain to Bruce of DMG and build

No, I didn't but I probably will. I cannot understand why should I
donate my domain name to somebody (even to DMG which I really like)
just because the name is similar. This domain name was free even a
week ago so anybody could get it. So I took it for this particular
project.
BP> Lastly, I think the discussion should happen off-list.
If you really think so you could answer off-list but for some reason
you didn't.
And here are my 2 cents:
I really appreciate any comments and ideas but please don't tell me
that it is so big and hard thing to do that I should not even start it
and all things I'm doing are wrong. I know that it is not easy, I know
that it will not become the most important place in the world, but it
is an attempt to build something which might be helpful to people.
There are not so many web sites about this kind of music so to have
just one more cannot be bad.
